Ottawa Hybrid 2013-March 17, 2012

Post by minusfive »

Announcing the VIIth incarnation of the Ottawa Hybrid Tournament! 'Cause what's the point of knowing about how matter is put together if you can't name that guy in that movie?
We are running this tournament in conjunction with Carleton University (Ottawa)'s MUT Mirror (which is being held on Saturday, March 16th: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... =8&t=14129)

The tournament is packet-submission but is centrally edited. We welcome new writers' contributions and this is an ideal event to practice writing. Difficulty will be intermediate (above novice but below "standard difficulty"). If you have not submitted a pack by March 14 2013, you will not be allowed to play.

This tournament is OPEN: your great-great-great great granduncle can play with your 2 year old granddaughter, if they wish. We are particularly interested in attracting both University and High School students, as per OH tradition.

Speaking of particularly interested, we are particularly interested/hopeful that we can announce some mirror sites. Mirror fees are extremely reasonable, the tournament is centrally edited by an experienced team, and we aim to have some fun. Freelance packets will be gratefully accepted in exchange for a) candy b) R. Mutt-inspired readymades possibly drawn on a napkin.

As another way of luring you into the metaphorical van that is this tournament, there will be prizes. Prizes!

Announcement and Distribution Follows:

WHEN: Sunday, March 17th, 2013 (9:00 A.M. SHARP-No sleeping in [this time])
WHERE: University of Ottawa main campus (Building TBA)
WHY: Just filling the empty void that is life-with Prizes!
ENTRY FEE: $100 Base Fee
DISCOUNTS: $-50 for a full pack before 11:59 P.M. (EST) on March 1, 2013
$-25 for a full pack before 11:59 P.M. (EST) on March 8, 2013

Who exactly is editing this tournament? Does this mean that everyone must write a packet or only those who would have to write a packet under ACF rules?

Not very guerrila. You'll see your phrasing and answer lines, but not exclusively. We'll try to clean up/improve questions, but not at the cost of quality.
Masked Canadian History Bandit wrote:If high schools not called Lisgar show up, expect lots of shitty, completely unusable packets.
Writing cannot be measured only in terms of good packet submission. We are prepared for "shitty packets" and do want them (so as to at the very least provide feedback) but I guess I have a little bit more faith in Canadian hs quizbowl than that.

Mac is fo sho interested in retaining its Hybrid-winningness. Expect at least one, at most 3 teams to be swoocing on into the O-town next month! I fully expect that you will be bestowing upon the winning team the title of Ottawacus Maximus, si?

Sure. It's time for a new Ottawacus Maximus (just remember to hold the Triumph, if you win).

Yes, we're still looking for mirrors in all of the major regions (date flexible, entry fee determined by host). Mirror fee is $15 per team, going down to just $5 (what a bargain! and Canadian money, too!) if the host submits a pack by March 5th.

Dartmouth, we're certainly with you in looking for a mirror in New England.

Hey All,
We will be meeting in the brand-spanking-new Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) Building (the same place as uOttawa's Delta Burke mirror). Map is here: http://www.uottawa.ca/maps/
9 A.M. SHARP

If anyone needs parking info, accomodations info, or other info, please don't hesitate to contact me (parking just across from campus east of King Edward is free on the weekend, and there's pay parking on campus under Brooks Hall).

A final reminder that packets MUST be in by tomorrow night to get a discount. Holla!

Yo, so you can count on at least 2 teams from Mac. We'll be getting our packets in by Thursday. As for discounts, I believe we qualify for distance, laptop, possibly a staffer, and buzzers (if we can get them working).

Pleased to announce that the tournament has plenty of scoresheets, and a competent staff guarding "home base" to prevent laptop theft! A quick warning to players: one of the moderators has noticed a mistake somewhere in the set. Players are encouraged to hang their coats on coathooks, or better yet, just drop them on a desk.

The tournament headquarters are also equipped with high-grade speakers and an amateur DJ spinning the hottest Youtubes. So far, it's shaping up to be the best Hybrid yet!

Warning: The scoresheets you were issued were printed without rooms marked in, so you must rely on attached drawings in pen and your best orienteering. Some of our staff have only written in floor numbers instead of room numbers -- can you guess which ones?

Live announcements and coverage of Ottawa Hybrid will continue throughout the day, unless I have something else to do.

UPDATE: Headquarter managers just played the Top Ten NHL Goals videos from this week and last -- everyone went nuts! There were all kinds of behind the back passes, and a pretty illegal lunge/trip move from a Panthers player. Also some great tweets by @extranapkins were read on the big projector computer and they were pretty funny. The headquarter managers are playing Sleater-Kinney on the speakers now but they may switch to something quieter. Hopefully a team on bye will come visit.

Now the room managers have switched the music to Hot Chip, but everyone is really angry and demanding they go back to Sleater-Kinner. Some staff members have threatened to start yelling answerlines from the finals if they don't get their choice of music. Hot Chip defenders have taken some laptops hostage; they are chanting something but I don't know what language it's in. We might need to radio for backup, here in the headquarter room. Maybe Jordan can restore martial law to the tournament so things will cool down?

EDIT: New field reports indicate that a question in the set may have been missing a power-mark. Hybrid staff assure all players that they will be convening and making a harsh, no-nonsense decision about how best to handle this situation.

EDIT: A peace agreement has now been reached; fans of both bands agree to cool down and listen to Arvo Part. Players in tournament rounds have been petitioning their moderators to come rock out with everybody at headquarters, but demand for partying may violate the fire code. Jay Misuk proposes that spots in headquarters be distributed via some kind of lottery, but he does not offer any suggestions for how to implement this plan.

There must have been. Brendan was trapped guarding a lecture room with stuff in it by himself this morning. When I left he was youtube-playing a song talking about burying people in Gucci Stores on the lecture-hall speakers, and I guess it devolved (evolved?) into this.

Congratulations to the winning team I ran Zafar Away (Huma Zafar, Aaron Dos Remedios, Eric Smith and Rein) who bested a valiant McGill team in the final. Sam Challen was top HS scorer. I still have to track down a couple of packets (incl. the playoff packets), but mostly-complete prelims are here (note that Earl of March had 5 players, so are not supposed to add up to full rounds played): http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... hybrid-rr/

A HUGE HUGE Thank you to all the volunteers today, Brendan included, who made this possible, and no less HUGE HUGE thanks to the very dedicated writing team that made this possible. Just as a quick end credits they are:
Shelby Robert, Dennis Beeby, Brendan McKendy, Melinda Mah, Radu Popescu, JJ Li, Akhil Garg, and myself.
