Laker Challenge (Mountain Lakes, NJ): 5/18/13 (CMST IV)

Post by Northern Central Railway »

Hello, Ladies and Gentlemen:

Mountain Lakes High School in Mountain Lakes, NJ is pleased to announce that we will host the first annual Laker Challenge on Saturday, May 18 2013. This is an open junior high (grades 5-8) quiz bowl tournament to played on the Common Middle School Tournament (CMST) set. We will follow the tossup-bonus format, with two teams of four students each buzzing in attempting to answer a tossup, with a correct answer earning and the opportunity to hear a bonus. Each bonus will have three parts worth ten points each where the team will have the chance to confer before giving an answer – there will be no bounceback on the bonus. A game will consist of twenty tossups and however many bonus are used, which will take 30-40 minutes per round. Teams will play 5 games in the morning, followed by lunch and then playoffs.

The entry fee is $60 per team, with a $10 discount for bringing a working buzzer system and a $10 discount for a moderator. You will get 5 guaranteed games, potentially more depending on playoffs progress. Included in the registration team is one pizza per team at lunch (more can be purchased), a breakfast of bagels and juice before the tournament, and medals/ trophies for the top students and teams. If you have any questions or would like to register, please register in this thread or e-mail me at

Will there be powers and negs, as in the NAQT format?

This is CMST, so no powers, and I'm not sure about negs.

This year's CMST is, in fact, power-marked.

Stats will be posted in the next few days.

As alluded to in the above post, Middlesex A (consisting of no 8th graders) won the tournament beating Briarcliff Orange (B team) by the score 360-215 or thereabout in the final. Warren beat Briarcliff Red (A team) 280-270 for third.

For being the first tournament that Mountain Lakes has ever hosted, it went pretty well. There are certainly some small improvements that will be made when Mountain Lakes hosts in the future, but today did run pretty smoothly.

Big thanks to all the Mountain Lakes HS students and parents who volunteered as well as Seton Hall Prep for the use of their buzzers today.

Thanks to Mr. Ibendahl and all the volunteers that helped make this tournament well-run and successful. Congratulations to Briarcliff Orange, Warren, and Briarcliff Red for placing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively. Thank you for a great quizbowl experience for our sixth and seventh graders (including me). We enjoyed the tournament, and hope it will be run again next year!

Is the Briarcliff Middle School that came to this from Briarcliff, NY? Like in Westchester?
