If it pans out like last year, Hart County should be on 12/14.

The 11/2 slot would be the only feasible one for Hart Co., now having the two in order.

I'm not quite sure Fred, but the sets are damn near duplicates of previous years.

One team that we played against last season said, "This is one of the 2010 sets." and they were very right in thinking so.

Also: The Moderators were very very unqualified to be officiating anything, in my opinion.

I've never been to Hart County's tournament for a number of reasons but here's what I know:

It's a quick recall tournament run on recycled one-line questions and uses a format that involves outdated practices such as single elimination. It's hard to tell exactly what goes on since it's cloaked in a bizarre form of secrecy so that nobody knows anything about the tournament before, during, or after it. When I was coaching at Grayson County we sent two teams, and the experience was apparently bad enough that none of the players ever wanted to go back.

It's in an area of the state (about 45 minutes north of Bowling Green) that doesn't have enough good tournaments, so if they decided to start using pyramidal questions and a reasonable format that would be awesome. In the absence of change, teams should probably focus on going to other events.

Example of the brilliant moderators at Hart last year:

Mod: "Name this university, named for the founder of the debtor's colony of Georgia."

My answer of Oglethorpe was apparently unacceptable because I didn't say "Oglethorpe University", and the question in no way asked for a two word response.

Ah, yes, I recall seeing an old binder in junior high with Hart questions from, like, the late '90s. One was along the lines of "I declined the Nobel Prize in Literature, who am I?" Pasternak was given as the only correct answer, with Sartre written in next to it in pen, probably ex post facto.

In terms of whom teams graduate and who returns, what little I know: Dunbar only loses Vania (to graduation) and Will, but neither of those losses will really cripple them. Manual graduates Eliza and David, but they're generally able to reload pretty quickly, and from what I've seen of their B team that appears to be true this year as well (they beat Dunbar A quite soundly at NAQT State, and Alice made NASAT.) Johnson has a quite respectable squad, all returning. Campbell graduates Jenna and Jared, and they almost seem like the reason for their meteoric rise, but we'll see what happens in the event that they go places other than Louisville this year. Pikeville loses myself for most tournaments and Iman, leaving the other half of the team that won KAAC State and a bunch of freshmen and sophomores.

Also, the Gatton Academy will most likely be fielding a couple teams this year. I don't feel comfortable jinxing our performance with early predictions.

Unfortunately, no. We're explicitly forbidden from competing in Governor's Cup; their metaphor was that of a stacked deck. NAQT and PACE are okay with it, though.

We admit about 60 juniors give or take a few every year, so we usually have an enrollment in the 120s, although as Jeff has mentioned our selection disqualifies us from that.

Sure, I'll bite. This is only of the teams I'm familiar with, which aren't that numerous.

Upper echelon/S tier: Dunbar, Gatton, Manual. Dunbar and Manual's returning players should make for two of the best lineups in the state. Gatton is comparable to a NASAT team that gets an entire season together (in terms of nature, not necessarily skill), and there will perhaps be some bumps in the road early on, but I honestly believe that our lineup can run with the best once we get acclimated to each other.

Upper-middle echelon/A tier: Corbin, Johnson, Pikeville, Russell. I get the feeling that Corbin and Pikeville will be somewhat one- or two-man teams next year (Kieren, Ammad respectively,) but nevertheless capable. The state of whoever Kieren's protege/s is/are is probably best left a mystery, but I'm doubtful that he can just conjure up a supporting cast out of this summer. Pikeville's run this year was largely a coincidence, and I'm not even sure they'll attend much good quizbowl in my wake, but they still have enough depth to do fairly well where they do tread. As mentioned before, Johnson has both depth and the drive to improve; however, they're a relatively young team, and they've historically focused on Governor's Cup, which, of course, they're always good at. Again, we'll see how they do if they do go places. I don't know as much about Russell, but they certainly have some of the same things going for them as Johnson does. I haven't seen them play on anything harder than an A-set, but they nearly made the playoffs at HSNCT, so I wouldn't count them out of going toe-to-toe with some of the other teams listed here.

Existential void of people I don't know that much about: Eastern, Ballard, Campbell, St. Xavier, Henderson, Oldham, Bowling Green, Glasgow, Conner, about a million teams that only play KAAC. In the event that they play many tournaments this year, they could (and probably will) run the gamut.

EDIT: Accidentally an article

It is my personal opinion that rankings are probably useless until midseason so I would rather give out, and this with the notion that I am only a one year qb player, critiques of the teams for next year.

Dunbar-You are in the perennial position of being put as the best in Kentucky and your track record pretty much affirms it. You guys have strong balance and a good bonus conversion for such but the real question is, as at least 3/4 of Dunbar's starters next year are Seniors, will they take the final step necessary? In this increasingly competitive Kentucky Circuit to get to the next level Dunbar must turn from a team of good specialists to Strong Specialists. This will probably be the real test in breaking into the top 20 and beyond for them.

Gatton-Alex Malone, Will Walters are two of the many good or great players joining a solid Gatton team for next year. Since you guys are new but generally solid I would suggest getting the Canon fully divided up to the T and make all areas covered. As simplistic as it sounds, many of the players joining will have conflicting areas and there'll probably be a few knowledge gaps regardless.

Manual-Out of anyone this is the real wildcard team in my opinion. Their B team was made up of a great cast of young players, most importantly in Kentucky: non negging players, that I think will mesh nicely with the two A starters coming back. While the bonus conversion will probably be great I think the best thing they can do is work on their Power Percentage the most while still retaining that non negging attitude.

Corbin-Too much can be said about this team, I mean really. it was formed last year and has been since the usual suspect of losing to lesser teams while somehow winning against A Teams. Bonus Conversion is pathetic, Kieren Weisert could become a Transformer called Negatron, and well.........the others need to do more than show up to the competition, they must contribute! If the teammate acquiring goes south then Kieren Weisert must finally stop the negging and make himself into a well rounded player.

Pikeville-Ammad Mansoor and Noor Ali lead this team with the departure of Alex Malone to Team Gatton. The potential on Ammad especially is great if he studies this summer and can probably do a lot better as a one man team, although I doubt their good supporting cast will make that happen, than I did this year. Iman is gone and Alex leaves so Science and Literature are major concerns. Of course, they already know that.

Johnson-Please do quizbowl. Pretty please!? You guys have a variety of young, talented players that could definitely ascend to the top of these charts as late as the end of next season so now is the time to take advantage and shift from KAAC to QB. If you guys take that advice then keep on transitioning to learning how to play from about 100 in a match to 20 and stay sharp.

Russell, St X, Glasgow, etc.-Time to focus straight on in for QB. You all have talented kids but without a focus that unlimited potential atm will be wasted to lesser results than what could have really been achieved.

If you don't exist as a team yet? please join then look at everyone I did this season and well, don't.

Fred Morlan, Nick Conder, any other tournament directors-You guys are awesome! Keep up the great work.

I haven't seen Trimble County mentioned yet. They only appeared at our Spring tournament (outside of KAAC), but James Line did really well for them. I don't know if he's coming back, but since they nearly made the top bracket in a really tough tournament, they have a real shot at doing well this season.

Kieren, I actually brought up the idea of going to more tournaments than Ezell Harding, Hart Co., Fleming, and Glasgow, and our assistant coach wasn't having it, and he's usually pretty much in agreement with Mrs. Porter. I just personally feel like we can't grow that much as a team if we stick almost solely to KAAC and (the horror that is) EKAC.

James Line was a senior, and Trimble county has just recently gone through a coaching change. Two years ago, I really wish they had play quizbowl as I feel they would've done amazingly. I even heard them mention one time that they oddly enough studied NAQT's free lists, yet never played quizbowl. So they're almost devoid of good players now, but maybe these coaches will take them to quizbowl. I'm not really sure.

If I had to guess, there are probably ten teams to keep an eye on: Dunbar, Gatton, Manual, Corbin, Johnson, Pikeville, Russell, Campbell, Glasgow, and Henderson. The first seven were mentioned by Alex and Kieren, the last three have returning players (Clayton Truman, Olivia Kiser, and Hencye Sights respectively) that have been impressive over the last couple years. There are also some consistently successful teams (Danville, Ballard, Daviess, and Eastern come to mind) that may be pretty good, I just don't know who they have back.

The November 16th date for UK has been confirmed. May will probably be fine. March, we'll have to wait for Merit Day Weekend dates to be determined before we can make a firm announcement.

We'll make an official, full-length UK Fall Championship announcement and open up registration at a reasonable date.

With next year, there are some solid teams in Kentucky. I think Dunbar, Gatton, Glasgow, Manual, Corbin, and Pikeville will all be very strong. I also think Ballard will be very very good and they were not included in previous lists. Jack Zhang is a senior and averaged 59.02 at HSNCT. Campbell, St. X, Russell, and Eastern were all hit hard by graduation.

Even scarier, I believe Jack Zhang might only be a junior next year (he was a freshman all-star from Kentucky last year along with Olivia Kiser I believe). I figure that they'll be quite strong next year as well, but I know they are losing at least their second scorer. I'm very interested in seeing how next year shapes up.

edit: Also, good luck to all the Kentucky teams competing at NSC this weekend! I believe it's only Dunbar and Pikeville representing us, so it looks like we'll have some pretty good finishes coming our way.

This is correct.

No, we also had Kieren Weisert from Corbin and Alice Lu from DuPont Manual on the Kentucky team and they did quite well. We placed 7th in the nation and all six of the players have the potential to make the team again next year. Kentucky has some excellent talent and the more involved we get our players in good quizbowl this year, the stronger our chances are to finish even higher in 2014!

The Rowdy Raider Invitational at Northmont HS in Clayton, OH will be on December 7th. We always draw a great field of teams from Kentucky, and would love to have a large Kentucky contingent again this year. If you could add this event to your calendar, I would appreciate it. We will be using an NAQT IS set, which I will post when it is announced.

The Fall Kickoff Tournament will be hosted at Sidney High School in Sidney, Ohio on October 5th. I am hoping to draw some teams from out of state this year (Kentucky, Indiana, and Michigan) so we can have an incredibly competitive field on what will be an excellent question set and a great opportunity to get teams playing early in the year.

Is there going to be a Cincinnati area mirror this year? If not, have you thought about potentially soliciting a host in northern Kentucky?

Right now there are four Ohio sites but none of them are in the Cincinnati area (the Sidney site is the closest). We would be happy to have a Kentucky mirror if someone were willing - if you have any ideas of who might be interested, I would be glad to talk with them about it!

Would you be willing to list the Dorman SC (Jan 18, 2014) Cavalier Challenge on your schedule? We have been fortunate to have many Bluegrass State teams at our event in the past, and we would love to see that number grow going forward.

Could you add the JR FCAT on Sept. 28?

Fleming County High School in Kentucky will host the first annual JR Fleming County Academic Tournament Saturday September 28. We have been assigned NAQT set MS-05.

We have a soft cap of 16 teams, but hope to expand to 20 if interest and manpower warrant the expansion.

Entry fee is $60 and we ask teams to bring a working buzzer system and a reader or scorekeeper.

It's the collegiate sectional tournament. It's not open to high school teams, but I put it on the schedule as a heads up that college teams probably can't host or help staff on that day.

Thanks Nick,

We are having issues with our December 14 date and I am exploring other options. The ACT is administered at our school on December 14th and we are most likely going to be unable to work around it. I did not catch that moving from Dec. 15 last year to Dec. 14 this year was switching from Saturday #3 to Saturday #2. I should have caught that.

Right now I am exploring several possibilities including:

1)Keeping it December 14 but trying to use another facility. (unlikely)
2)A February 1 or February 8 tournament between District and Region to help folks tune up for Region.
3)A January 4th tournament. (Probably a no go conflict with NHBB WKy Regional but they haven't posted a date yet.)
4)Giving up for 2013-2014 and creating a back to school invitational in late August. I like the idea of this, but do not know what interest there would be.

I would appreciate any feedback on the above list. We would like to host a regular tournament. The problem with a December tournament is that if you do it on the third Saturday, half of the time it will be the weekend kids are out of school but if you do it on the second Saturday you will conflict with 6th grade showcase, Beta, etc...

I can't get a handle on any other dates that are not either impossible for us or conflicting with other Kentucky tournaments.
