BISB Seeking Mirrors, 2013-2014

Post by adamsil »

Hello,

The 2013 Brookwood Invitational Scholars Bowl is seeking mirrors for the 2013-2014 school year. Next year’s set will be entirely written and edited by myself, Adam Silverman, Mostafa Bhuiyan, Brady Weiler, and Kunal Naik. Between us, we have written thousands of quizbowl questions, and I personally have edited three high school sets in the past, so you can be sure of a high-quality set of questions. For the use of the questions, we are charging $10 per team that attends your tournament site.

Here is the distribution of the tournament:
4/4 Literature (1/1 American, 1/1 European, 1/1 British, and 1/1 World/Miscellaneous/more of the other three)
4/4 History (1/1 American, 1/1 European, 1/1 World, 1/1 More of the other three)
4/4 Science (1/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Physics, 1/1 Other Science, including Non-computational Math, Computer Science, Earth Science, Astronomy, and History of Science)
3/3 Arts (1/1 Painting, 1/1 Compositional Music, 1/1 Other Arts, including Jazz, Opera, Art Film, Musical Theater, Sculpture, Photography, and Architecture)
1/1 Mythology
1/1 Religion and Philosophy (with a focus on Abrahamic religion)
1/1 Geography (with a focus on cultural clues)
1/1 Current Events (this will also include events from the last ten to fifteen years, not just last year)
1/1 Social Science and Mixture--This category will include a few cross-category common links as well as normal social sciences such as anthropology, psychology, and economics. We are also stressing civics, as we believe political science is an under-asked but very convertable and important topic that people learn in high school.

+ Tiebreakers from either Literature, History, or Science

We are providing 14 packets. The rounds will be 20/20*, with no powers. Tossups will be 5-6 lines in 10 TNR font, and each bonus part will be two lines or less. There will be no popular culture in the tournament. We are attempting to especially reward knowledge learned in class in this tournament. The science will focus primarily on topics HSers are likely to encounter in a course setting; the literature will tend toward asking about core canonical works and authors rather than listing off Nigerian authors or titles of books that nobody reads anymore; etc. We are making a conscious effort to make this set easier than past tournaments that I’ve edited, such as BDAT II.

tl;dr Reasons to mirror this tournament:

1. The set is already well more than halfway done. Our goal is to be done writing on July 31 and editing/packetizing on August 31, so we would be ready for mirrors starting in September.
2. Because it’s yours for the cheap price of $10 per team that attends your tournament!
3. My trademark bad jokes will surely make it into the set in some fashion.

I’m a generally forgetful person, so email Mostafa at mostafa0104 at gmail dot com if you’re interested in mirroring this set. If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me at adsilverman at bellsouth dot net.

*The actual site at Brookwood’s tournament will use a format involving Give and Takes for the prelim games only, in line with past years. But we’re offering the set as a standard 20/20 as well. If you’re interested in the three-quarter format, we can offer you that modification too.

Yes, we recognize that there’s already a glut of mirror-able housewrites. Yes, we could have joined forces with another school, but I’ll freely admit that the four of us wrote most of this tournament before thinking about mirrors, because Brookwood asked us to. So other than giving us some editing advice, I’m not sure how collaborating will help at this point since most of the questions have been written or claimed already. But please, if you’re interesting in giving some advice or playtesting, contact me as above!

The set has been written in full and compiled into packets. In the next month and a half, we will be editing and playtesting the questions to fix up any mistakes we did not catch in initial editing. We've also gotten four mirrors besides the main site set up across the country, and would love more. If you're looking for a set to mirror, shoot me an email!

I've been keeping track of the mirrors in the third post of this thread. So far, we have mirrors in Illinois, North Carolina, Southern California, Kentucky, and Virginia to go along with the main site at Brookwood. There are still plenty of states and regions without BISB mirrors set up, so if you or your team is interested, please don't hesitate to shoot me an email. Thanks!

Haverford College will be mirroring BISB on November 16th! We could still use mirrors in other states, so if you're interested, shoot me an email!

Is there a limit to how late in the year you will let this be mirrored?
