RESULTS: Sue Pasco Opening Tournament (9/28/13 at Essex, VT)

Post by kcommo »

The Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl will hold the 15th annual Sue Pasco Opening Tournament at Essex High School in Essex Junction, Vt., on Saturday, Sept. 28.

This is our annual kickoff tournament -- a semi-formal event, featuring candy prizes and primarily intending to serve as an introduction to the season for Vermont teams. However, will be gladly welcome any schools from outside the state interested in joining us.

We hold this tournament in conjunction with our league coaches meeting, and the format is dependent on the number of readers available. If we get enough volunteers, we will start during the meeting and play 8-10 matches about 20 minutes in length. If not, we hold some kind of collective competition during the meeting and likely run eight shorter matches once the meeting ends and the coaches can help moderate games.

This tournament will serve as an NAQT HSNCT qualifier, but to keep costs to a minimum, we're using IS-125A, a set from last season. Any school that has purchased or played on that set is ineligible to participate.

The tournament is free for all members of the Vermont Scholars' Bowl. We ask any out-of-state schools to pay $10 per team to help defray our question costs. The registration deadline is Sept. 23.

If your interested in registering or have any other questions, contact me, Kevin Commo, at kcommo (at) scholarsbowl (dot) org.

Our host team from Essex High School won the Sue Pasco Opening Tournament for the first time in its 15-year history, going 9-1 on Saturday to clear a field of 22 teams. Essex twice beat runner-up South Burlington to secure the title as both teams went 4-1 in the top playoff group.

Massachusetts' AMSA won its first eight matches, including a victory over Essex, but had to settle for forth place after narrowly dropping its last two matches to third-place Champlain Valley A and South Burlington A.

Essex A, South Burlington, CVU A and AMSA A should earn NAQT nationals qualification along with Lamoille, our top small school in 11th place.

Thanks to the volunteer readers for their assistance and the teams for putting up with the printing issues. I hope everyone had a good time.
