Tar Heel Cup, Chapel Hill, NC (09/14/13)

Post by ryanrosenberg »

UNC Quiz Bowl is proud to announce the 13th annual Tar Heel Cup, which is being held on Saturday, September 14th on the UNC campus. Nick Neuteufel and I will be co-TDs due to the tournament's coincidence with Yom Kippur.

Registration:
Tournament fees are as follows:
$70 for the first team
$60 for each subsequent team
-$10 for each buzzer set
-$10 for staff (readers or scorekeepers)
-$40 if a team has not attended a UNC tournament in the past three years

Send an e-mail to [email protected] with the name of your school, how many teams and buzzer sets you plan on bringing, and whether you have anyone willing to help staff the tournament. We are capping the number of teams at 24, so send your registration in as early as possible. The registration deadline will be Thursday, September 12th.

Payment will be accepted on the morning of the tournament, at check-in. If you must pay in advance, note this in your e-mail and I'll provide you with a mailing address. Checks should be made out to Carolina Academic Team.

Field cap: An initial field cap will be placed at 24. If we get sufficient interest and can secure enough rooms, staff, and buzzers, we may be able to expand that number.

Format: Division-based round robins in the morning, followed by round-robin playoffs in the afternoon.

Questions: We are planning on using HSAPQ's regular season set.

Affiliation: We have been given Platinum affiliation with PACE.

Location and parking: We will meet in Bingham 106, with game rooms in Dey and Bingham. Both are located on Polk Place, which is the main quad on campus. You can consult the campus map for more details. Parking is largely unrestricted on weekends, and you should be able to park in any of the nearby campus lots at no charge. Meals will not be provided, though there is no shortage of good food on Franklin Street.

If you have any further questions, please post them here or send them to [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you in September!

With a little over a week to go, we have two spots left in the field. We will only expand to 28 teams if we can be sure of reaching that number, so get your registrations in soon!

With the registration of Warwick High School from Newport News, VA, we've hit our field cap of 24 teams. Teams registering now will be placed on a waiting list until we reach 28 teams registered.

Edit: We've also been Platinum certified by PACE, meaning that the top 25% of our field will qualify for the PACE NSC and can register at the earliest possible date.

We've had two drops, so there's two more spots open in the field for the first teams to register.

Congratulations to Northmont for winning this year's Tar Heel Cup!

Northmont had to survive a difficult road to the championship, though, defeating Early College at Guilford A on the last tossup for the right to play Raleigh Charter A in a disadvantaged final. Raleigh Charter A had already beaten Northmont once before, but the team from Ohio pulled a 390-160 victory in the first game (stopped after tossup 15 by mutual agreement) and a 400-200 win in the final (stopped after tossup 18). The finals games were stopped once clinched to allow Raleigh Charter to leave as quickly as possible.

Congratulations also goes out to the teams that qualified for PACE NSC from this tournament: Northmont, Raleigh Charter A, Early College at Guilford A, Cave Spring A, and East Chapel Hill.

Thanks again to all the teams who came out and we hope to see you at future UNC tournaments. Stats will be posted tomorrow.

Thanks to the UNC Quiz Bowl team for putting on Tar Heel Cup! Our teams enjoyed the tournament, and really appreciated the opportunity to play some exciting playoff games. Northmont is a great and classy team and we're glad they came to Chapel Hill to play this tournament.

Hey folks: I'm sure the stats will be posted by UNC as soon as possible. Please follow the board rules about not making multiple posts on the topic of stats.

We had to fix a small error with the prelims, but they should be up now. Unfortunately, the scoresheets for the finals appear to have been lost.

This is true. I'll play around with the HTML and see if I can prettify it.
