Collegiate Novice 4 @ Stony Brook (9/21/13)

Post by Lightly Seared on the Reality Grill »

Hey all!
Stony Brook Quiz Bowl will be hosting Collegiate Novice 4 on September 21st at SBU's Student Activities Center (located in Brookhaven, New York according to Google Maps). Details about the set can be found here. If you plan on registering, send an e-mail to [email protected] with how many teams, buzzers, and moderators you'll be bringing, along with a phone number in case we need to contact you on the day of the tournament. As usual, posting in this thread will only show interest and will not count as a registration. Please note that we only have enough space for eight teams at the moment, and we're working to increase that number.
Updates: Registration will close on September 19th. Field cap is currently at twelve teams.

Eligibility rules, as per the main thread:
1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.

2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.

3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.

4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:

i. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits). Time in a post-secondary high school program does not count.

ii. If you were ever on a playoff or top-bracket team at NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC.

iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.

iv. If you have ever won any college tournament.

5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.
If you would like to request special permission to play, e-mail head editor Andrew Hart at [email protected].

Fee Structure (shamelessly stolen from another mirror):
Base fee: $15 per player
Buzzers: -$5 per functioning buzzer system (we only have one buzzer system at the moment, so we really need these!)
Staff: -$5 per staff member (so long as they can either read or fill out scoresheets sufficiently well)
Travel discount: -$10 per 200 miles one-way as indicated by Google Maps
Minimum fee: $5 per player

Logistics:
Registration will open at 9 AM in SAC 306 (which is right in the middle of the Student Activities Center's third floor), and our goal is to start the tournament at 10 AM. We'll figure out a format as the tournament comes closer, but expect 8 to 10 rounds with a break after round 5.

FIELD (final):
Columbia (3 teams, 1 buzzer, 1 mod)
NYU (2 teams, 1 buzzer, 2 mods)
Stony Brook (2 teams)
Vassar (1 team, 1 mod)
Yale (1 team, 2 buzzers)

It looks like there is some interest from NYU in sending at least one team to this....

Field's up to date. We still have a lot of space even if we end up stuck with 4 rooms, so feel free to sign up!
Also, we'll be borrowing a few extra buzzers for the tournament if it looks like we'd be short otherwise, so those won't be too much of an issue.

And the field is closed at 10 teams! All the teams should have gotten an e-mail.

We've just hit the lunch break, and Columbia B is leading the pack, followed by NYU's teams, Columbia C, and Yale. Here are the stats through round 5: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... h_round_5/

So this happened!
After the full round robin, Columbia B was undefeated, followed by NYU B with 7-1. The teams agreed to play the last round as a "final", where both teams would be declared co-champions in the case that NYU B won. Ultimately, this ended up not mattering, as Columbia B won 515-185 to take the tournament. The final standings were as follows:

1. Columbia B (9-0)
2. NYU B (7-2)
3. Columbia C (6-2)
4. NYU A (5-3)
5. Yale (4-4)
T-6. Vassar (2-6)
T-6. Columbia A (2-6)
T-6. Stony Brook α (2-6)
9. Stony Brook Ω (0-8)

The top player was Alec from NYU B with 93.12 PPG before finals, followed by Shreyas (Columbia B, 67.5 PPG), Fred (Yale, 47.5 PPG), and Irit (Columbia B, 41.25 PPG).
The full stats (with finals) can be found here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... /complete/
Hope you all enjoyed it!

Why not just play the last packet as a real finals in case NYU won?

We had to have byes since we had an odd number of teams; the 8 games were played in 9 rounds.
EDIT: I think I misunderstood the question- we didn't want to run it as a legit final because NYU winning would have resulted in two teams being 8-1 overall and 1-1 head to head, yet unequal in rank. It was universally agreed that this would be bad.

Also, to give credit where credit is due: thanks to Aidan Mehigan, York Chen, and the guys from NYU whose names I didn't catch, without whom this tournament would've been completely impossible to run!
EDIT: And thanks to Erin Casserly from North Babylon, whose buzzers let us get set up faster.

I don't understand the purpose of a "novice" tournament featuring three different people who were 100 PPG players in high school, or of allowing formats to be constructed that don't allow for a final. If the purpose of EACN is to introduce new people to quizbowl, then it should 1) be limited to new people and 2) resemble good quizbowl.
