Scarsdale Tournament- 1/11/14

Post by cindy_du »

Scarsdale High School in Westchester, NY is hosting a tournament on 1/11/14.
We're again trying to counter the amount of :chip: in the area with real quizbowl.
We are going to be using NAQT set IS-133A
Guaranteed 8 rounds, Cap at 24 teams (and we mean it this year!) EDIT: Limit of 2 teams per school because we want some spots for local teams
Fees are...
$75 for the first team
$60 for each additional team
Discounts of $10 for each moderator and $5 for each buzzer set
Minimum fee $40
Register to [email protected]
or in thread below
Registration/Drop deadline is December 15th.
I hope you consider coming!
Sign ups as of yet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... sp=sharing
As you can see, we had 25 teams after 2 days, which we didn't entirely expect
Sincerely,
Cindy Du and Micheal Bogaty, Co-directors

Sorry, we forgot to mention this in our original post. Can teams that sign up please give us an email address and phone number that you can be contacted on the day of the tournament?

Also, the tournament is nearly half full (11/24) in under an hour. Sign up ASAP!

Sorry, yet another thing we didn't mention. We will have an initial limit of 3 teams per school so more schools can participate. Additional teams will be added to the waitlist and will be notified by mid-December about whether they got off the waitlist.
Second, teams may only receive one buzzer discount per team. So, if you bring 2 teams, you can receive up to 2 buzzer discounts.

Hi,
I'm really sorry to do this, and I hope you won't hate us too much, but since this tournament filled up so fast, we want to limit all schools to 2 teams. We will wait list your 3rd spot in order of sign up, and we'll tell you by mid December.
Part of why we started the tournament was to get real quizbowl into our local area, so we wanted to keep some spots open for local teams. I know we should have said it before hand, but I didn't realize this would fill up so quick.
Also, part of our problem with our school was sheer numbers of people in the building, since it was a student run affair.
Really really sorry,
Sincerely,
Cindy

We have not received contact information from the following teams:

Can those teams please provide an email address and a cell phone number that can be used to contact someone on the team on the day of the tournament?
Thanks!

The drop deadline is next week, 12/15, so we'd just like to remind you to ask around again now and make sure nothing has changed with your team.
Also, we need still contact info from
Horace Greeley
in addition to Ridgewood, High Tech, Mountain Lakes, Seton Hall which we mentioned before
(email and day of phone number, please)
Thanks!

Its not too late to register but the tournament is currently full. We can put you on the wait list if you want. There have already been some teams that dropped, so it is definitely possible there will be more and you would get off the wait-list.

Just a reminder that this tournament is happening right after the holiday break. If anything's changes, please do let us know.
Also, Seton Hall Prep needs to give us day of contact info
Hopefully everyone who is coming received our email with details
If not, please read this:
1. Please check the following spreadsheet to make sure we have you down for the correct number of teams, buzzers, and moderators.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... ring#gid=0

2. Please bring payment the day of the tournament. Make checks payable to "Scarsdale Union Free School District". You may pay in cash, but we would prefer check. If you will need an invoice and have not already requested one, please let us know.

3. Registration will take place from 8:15 to 8:40 with the first round starting no later than 9 am. Please be at Scarsdale High School by 8:40. The school's address is 2 Brewster Road. Scarsdale, NY 10583. Using this version of the address will make it easier to get to the correct entrance for the tournament, which is on Brewster Road, not Post Road.

4. We will provide free breakfast, consisting of bagels and drinks. Teams will have the opportunity to order pizza in the morning. Since there is no food within walking distance, ordering pizza is recommended.

5. The tournament's format will be similar to last year's. We will have round robins of 6 teams each in the morning with the top two in each group advancing to championship round robins of 4 teams each. The winner and second place team in each championship round robin will play for first place and third place respectively. Teams not advancing to the championship round robin will play consolation games.

Is the intention that we order pizza independently or through you, and in the latter case what is the cost per pizza?

We will be selling pizza. The cost will be fifteen dollars for a large, cheese pizza. I understand this is somewhat more expensive than at other tournaments, but all the pizza places in the area are on the pricey side.

Thank you again to all teams for coming!

Congratulations to High Tech for defeating Livingston A in a rematch of last year's finals to take the championship. Ridgewood defeated Deep Green and Horace Greeley A defeated Darien A to win third and fifth place respectively. Also, congratulations to Shravon Balaji of Deep Green for winning top individual scorer.

Stats will likely be posted tomorrow. Since this was just our second time hosting a tournament, please let us know if you have any suggestions on how we could run the tournament more smoothly in the future.

Aside from the general chaos of the trash tournament (which can't even be attributed to Scarsdale for the most part), there's not too much to offer criticism about. Deep Green enjoyed this tournament, we were pleased with the timely dismissal and the general friendliness of the hosts. We look forward to coming back next year. Thanks for hosting!

This tournament was fun, thanks to Scarsdale for putting this together. We appreciated the punctuality; the tournament started on time and was over well before the predicted 5:00pm finish time.

As for recommendations, the only suggestion that comes to mind right now is that it would've been nice to get printed stats after prelims. I heard a mention of them but they never materialized. It's not necessary, but it's helpful to see how things are standing. Also, there may have been a factual error in a question. Thank you again!
