BHSAT at Georgia Tech (2/15/14)

Post by pajaro bobo »

Hey everybody,

I'm pleased to announce that the Georgia Institute of Technology will be hosting a mirror of Yale's BHSAT on February 15, 2014. The tournament will begin sometime around 8:30 AM, and conclude by 5 PM. The tournament will be held in Georgia Tech's Instructional Center (759 Ferst Drive NW, Atlanta, GA 30318). Parking info will be forthcoming.

Fees:
$70 base fee
$-5 off the base fee for each additional team
$-5 for each working buzzer (No limit)
$-10 for each school which drove more than 100 miles to compete

Teams will be grouped into preliminary brackets in the morning before being grouped into playoff brackets based on similar performance, with ten games being guaranteed to all teams. (Teams are strongly encouraged to stay for the whole tournament.) All matches will consist of 20 tossups (no powermarks) and 20 bonuses. Bouncebacks will not be used, though negs will. The distribution of each packet will be as follows:
Ivar the Boneless wrote: 4/4 Literature (at least 1/1 each American, British, European, .5/.5 one more of the above, .5/.5 World)
4/4 Science (1/1 biology, 1/1 chemistry, 1/1 physics, 1/1 other science, with a heavy focus on math)
4/4 History (1/1 American, 2/2 European/British/Ancient, 1/1 World, Canadian/Australian where appropriate in context)
2.5/2.5 Religion, Myth, Philosophy (1/1 each Religion and Myth, .5/.5 Philosophy)
2.5/2.5 Fine Arts (1/1 Visual and 1/1 Auditory guaranteed per packet, .5/.5 one more of the above)
.5/.5 Social Science
.5/.5 Miscellaneous and Mixed*
1/1 Geography/Current Events (approx. .66/.66 Geo, .33/.33 CE)
1/1 Trash/Pop Culture

*These questions will be "some combination of miscellaneous content of importance to intellectually curious high schoolers on one hand, and purely academic questions whose clues come from multiple academic categories (in the vein of NAQT's Mixed_Pure_Academic questions) on the other.

Each packet will feature a tiebreaker tossup and an extra bonus, which could come from any academic category.
More detailed information on the set can be found here.

The field will be capped at 18 teams for now, though I hope to be able to expand 24 teams in the future. To register for this tournament, please fill out the attached registration form and email it to me, Alex Liu, at [email protected]. If the field is already filled when you register, your team will be placed on a waitlist, from which teams will be admitted into the field if a team decides to drop. You can also email me to ask any questions that you might have.

We look forward to seeing you on February 15th!

Fortunately, the Mathcounts tournament that was going to be held in the Instructional Center is apparently not happening anymore, and I've managed to reserve that building for this tournament instead. I have updated the first post accordingly.

Having this tournament in the IC means more room! I've bumped up the field cap slightly to 18 teams, and I'd really like to end up with a 24-team field. One team has registered already, and more would be great.

EDIT: The three-team per school limit is also gone.

Only a little more than a month left until the tournament, and there's still plenty of room left! Be sure to come play on what's sure a great set and face off against some good teams!

This tournament has received Platinum Certification from PACE! The top 25% of the field will qualify for the 2014 PACE NSC.

Also, there are still several spots remaining in the field with three weeks to go. Register while you still can!

I've bumped up the field cap to 20 and let the two teams on the waitlist in. There's a little over a week left until the tournament, but teams are still encouraged to register.

Also, just as a general reminder to people in the field: please make out your check to the "Georgia Tech Academic Team". An info email should be sent out this Sunday.

An email about the weather will be sent out to all coaches in a bit.

Long story short, we don't expect the tournament to be delayed, but we'll be keeping teams updated.

Congrats to Marist for clearing the field! Maxwell's Demons and Brookwood came out of a playoff circle of death to finish second and third, respectively.

Mostafa should be putting up full stats around Monday.
