Announcement: DUST-bowl

Post by saintanthony »

Updated Announcement

This set exists! In a playable form! Like that Ron Paul flashing strobe gif "it's happening!"

The primary change from the original announcement is that there are now eight packets instead of ten. I'm taking the remaining questions and will roll them over to a future event later this season if there is interest. The marginal utility of each trash packet after eight is negative, anyway.

Places where this will be played:
Windy City Open (8/9)
Cash game at Hooters Casino, Las Vegas, (8/9)
Michigan's mirror of Texas QB Camp (8/10)

I still need to get in touch/respond to Rob Carson (for some time during the 9/13-14 weekend) and the uWaterloo VCU Open mirror(8/9). Those messages are coming shortly once I get off work.

Places that have played this:
Ohio Battlebuzz (8/2)
VCU Open main site (8/3)

Special thanks to Ian Lenhoff for acting as my agent since I forgot to leave my email in the original post. You can reach me on facebook or at aws62 [at symbol] case [dot] edu.

Original Announcement:

This is a formal announcement for DUST-bowl, or Drew's Unread Set of Trash-bowl, a trash singles/doubles/quads event with questions by Drew Scheeler (with the possibility of some additional two questions from Jake Sundberg). Rather than announce this and flake out, I decided to wait until I reached a point where I could guarantee this would be finished. I’m done with seven packets and have the answers for ten, so now’s the time.

Distribution:

10 8 packets of:

4/0 Television: a mix of all times and all genres
4/0 Music: a mix of all times and all genres
4/0 Movies: a mix of all times and all genres
2/0 Video Games: one pre-Gamecube, one post-Gamecube
1/0 Pokemon: From Bulbasaur to Hoopa, inclusive
1/0 Trash Lit: books and reading paraphernalia and things with letters on them

The remaining 4/0 of each packet will be filled by some combination of questions from these categories:

‘90s nostalgia, comedy, food and drink, East Asian animation from Pacific Rim countries where they speak Japanese as an official language, internet things, Broadway, leftover ACF Fall-level academic tossups I wrote for uncompleted packets, consumerism, common links, trash art, tourism, non-webcomic comics, others, etc.

Difficulty:

My objective is this set will be the trash equivalent of regular-plus. There will be moderately difficult tossups on easy answers and fair tossups on what might show up as medium bonus part at another trash tournament.

Additional questions and clarifications:

Is this an April Fool’s Day joke?
No.

Why are there no sports/bonuses?
I don’t do sports/hate writing bonuses.

When/where will this be played?
I’m open to suggestions. Hit me up if you would like to attach this for some event this summer.

How much money?
I'm looking for ten eight dollars per person.

When you say a mix of all times and genres, you mean...?
Rest assured that there will be tossups that blur lines and yet no tossups on "Blurred Lines."

On a scale of one to Carly Simon, how vain will this set be?
I'm working very hard on controlling this.

Jake Sundberg has written a few questions for this. If you would like for him to write up some sports questions (if there is demand for such!), he would be happy to write some up.

I'm highly interested in playing this event, regardless of where or when it's hosted. I would also be in favour of seeing sports questions added to this.
