I'm totally playing if this happens, even if that means getting destroyed. I'll bring a friend along if you do teams.

I would like to play in this event and will attempt to put a team of miscellaneous Canadian players together for it.

I thought this was singles. Either way, I'd like "in" please.

Out of curiosity, what time is this planned for? If it's not in the afternoon or later (Eastern Standard Time) I'd like to give this a go.

I would actually like to move this to Sunday, May 18, after all, to accommodate personal plans as well as the MUT mirror on the 17th. Full details to follow shortly; let me know if playing on the new date is an impossibility for anyone.

OK, this will be at 11 AM eastern this coming Sunday, May 18.

The cost is $60 per team. Teams may contain up to four people from up to four locations. You are responsible for making sure you have Skype, a microphone, headphones, and a suitable Internet connection present and working BEFORE the tournament begins. Gather in #chb on Slashnet for further instructions at 11 AM.

Official signups will be taken in this thread, which may also be used to form teams from groups of less than four interested in playing.

There is definitely some interest in this from Canada. I can give you an approximate number of teams in a couple days.

Edit: I will be playing this tournament on a team that I am currently calling "Quelques Arpents De Neige." Our tentative roster is Brian MacNamara and Aayush Rajasekaran from Waterloo, Cameron Amini from Colonel By HS, and myself.

I am pretty sure there is also a second Ottawa-based team that will be playing this, but I will leave the formal announcements and arrangements up to the esteemed Mr. Dennis Beeby.

If readers are needed, I'd prefer to do that because History is the worst. If not, I will be not answering questions on one of the Canadian teams.

So are readers needed and can I moderate without currently being anywhere near North America?

Here is what the registration list looks like (revised 1:06 PM 5/17):

1: Ryan Rosenberg, Laurence Li, Ben Herman, Andrew Kiss
2: Jeff Hoppes
3: Victor Prieto, Jerry Vinokurov
4: Dennis Beeby, Brendan McKendy, Charles Korwin, Joe Su
5: Dave Madden
6: Corry Wang, Boyang Jiao
7: Aaron Dos Remedios, Brian McNamara, Aayush Rajasekaran, Cameron Amini
8: Robert Pond, Connor Duffy, Andrew Marrell, Drew Scheeler

Other people who said they might play: Vasa Clarke, Shravan Balaji

8 is an ideal number of this tournament, because we could do a 7 round RR followed by split playoffs in 10 games, which is about the right length for a Skype event. I encourage the two people on the fence to join an existing shorthanded team. Late entrants can do likewise; we appear to have 32 spots if we're doing 8 teams, and only 22 people definitively signed up, so there's ample room. Please use this thread to coordinate your teams as quickly as possible.

Myself, Mike Cheyne, Carsten Gehring, and Jacob Reed will be the moderators. Any other people who volunteered to staff are welcome to help with stats or sub in so the other readers can do a half-day. Again, post here so all the info is at hand.

When we start the event, Dave will give you instructions on mailing payment to NHBB -- it's $60 per team regardless of team size. Please come to #chb on Slashnet IRC at exactly 11 AM eastern tomorrow and do not be late. We will use the IRC channel as the base for coordinating the Skype connections. Thanks and enjoy.

For payment instructions, please send a check made out to "National History Bee and Bowl" for the amount owed (one check per team, please - if you need to pay $15 or whatever to someone on your team, that's fine, but I only want one check per team, so figure out who's sending the check in). The checks need to be sent to the following address, and they must arrive by a week from next Friday (that's plenty of time).
NHBB
PO Box 875
Tenafly, NJ 07670

If you are going to HSNCT, you can give me your team's fee there in either cash or check, but that is the only way to pay cash. I must have all payments by the end of HSNCT, or I will double the amount your team owes and chase you like a gadfly pursuing Io. Don't let that happen.

It's possible (albeit unlikely) that a cheque from Canada sent via regular mail will take longer than the allotted two weeks to reach you in NJ.

It almost certainly won't - is there a way you can send cash or a US $ denominated check? Seeing as though our bank charges $75 to cash foreign checks...

Congratulations to Jeff Hoppes for winning this tournament. After an exciting 305-300 defeat in the final round of the playoffs to the team of Ryan Rosenberg, Laurence Li, Ben Herman, and Andrew Kiss, Jeff came back to win the first game of an advantaged final 430-130.

Stats are here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... /combined/

Thanks to Carsten Gehring for doing stats, and Carsten, Auroni Gupta, and Mike Cheyne for reading.

This was the last usage of this set -- it is now completely clear for discussion and distribution and will be posted shortly.
