VCU Open mirror at Michigan (August 9)

Post by women, fire and dangerous things »

The traditional Michigan mirror of VCU Open (main announcement here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=16013) is happening on August 9. It will be held in Mason Hall starting at 9:00, but as we can't officially reserve rooms in the summer we will be unofficially occupying them. (This has never been an issue in the past, but it's conceivable that we might have to improvise a little). Since there are only four rooms, the field limit will be 9 teams.

This is an open tournament, so any teams of up to four human beings can play it.

To sign up, email me at [email protected]. Registration will only be considered official if you have done so.

Fees will be exactly the same as at the main site, so see the main announcement for details.

Side events will be happening. If you're planning on playing, please let me know if you have preferences about what side events you'd like to play, and whether you would stick around for Sunday side events, or just Saturday evening.

Field list:
House team(s)
Laferbrook + Cheynokurov
DCC (2 teams)
Teevens et al.

I would like to play this, since I'd prefer to keep the weekend of the 2nd free and the flight doesn't cost much more. I'd like to play with some new people.

I'd be interested in playing the TQBA tournament, Geography Monstrosity, and Tricon 2.5.

I would like to play this and am seeking (preferably new) teammates. I have no strong preferences about side events, and will probably play or staff whatever ends up being scheduled for Saturday night and Sunday morning.

I forgot how much I hate driving.

I'd like to play this and I'd definitely stick around for Sunday events. I will try to organize a Minnesota caravan.

I would like to play events on Sunday. I am interested in DUST-bowl, Tricon, and Imaginary Landscape, and if we have time, the Texas thing.

My team, pending approval by Mssrs. Laferbrook, will be them, me, and Jerry.

I should be there for Sunday (and Saturday night idiocy) and would play any trashy stuff and help staff the other things.

I plan on playing this and am looking for teammates. I hope to stick around for Sunday side events - I am most interested in Imaginary Landscape, though I will probably play whatever is offered.

EDIT: Due to unavoidable conflicts that would make the cost of travel significantly more expensive, I no longer plan on playing this tournament.

If anyone is flying into Detroit airport for this, my hotel is basically next to it, so (within reason) I can coordinate rides.

Also, I hope there is more than two teams signed up for this! Let's get moving.

Right now, the plan is to mirror the TQBA tournament as a full tournament on Sunday, and do shootouts on Tricon 2.5 and Imaginary Landscapes as side events, according to interest.

If we have time (and with a small field I don't see why not), I'd like to do at least a shootout of DUST as well.

There is somewhere around an 85% chance that I will be in town, so I'm looking for side event teammates (particularly Imaginary Landscape).

Also, if people plan to sign up for the main event, they should actually do so.

As far as I know, unless we get an influx of new people, I assume the side events will be shootouts. Shan, did you want to play Sunday together?

Final schedule for this weekend:

On Saturday, registration will be from 8:30 to 8:55 on the third floor of Mason Hall, and VCU Open will start at 9:00. After a short dinner break, we'll do a shootout on Imaginary Landscapes followed by a shootout on Tricon 2.5.

On Sunday, registration will be from 8:30 to 8:55 on the third floor of Mason Hall, and TQBA will start at 9:00. We'll do a shootout on DUST Bowl immediately after the tournament, with no break for dinner.

Are there more than four teams signed up to play this? Should we consider doubles or something instead of full teams?

I am not sure how many house teams there are (there are some people who I think are going to be here who are not on any team). If there is enough staff, then maybe some of the teams could become doubles, although it's probably best if the high school teams play this as full teams.

I'm not going to change the format to doubles or anything, but any team that wants to can of course split into two, provided they let me know before Saturday. (But each team would each have to pay an entry fee.)

As Mike mentioned, there are some people who said they'd come who haven't signed up yet (if you're one of those people: please form a team and sign up!), so a fifth team might coalesce, in which case we'll split up the house team and play a 6-team schedule. If not, we'll do a 4-team schedule.

By the way, I'm not going to cancel any of the promised events for this weekend, but I'd like to make sure everything runs quickly, so teams should try their utmost to arrive on time - the tournament may start without you if you're not there by 9:00. We'll be keeping the lunch and dinner breaks short, which shouldn't be a problem because there a million places to eat within a couple minutes of Mason. Finally, even if there is high demand for the side tournaments, they'll still be played as shootouts, so we don't waste time drafting teams, making a schedule, and so forth.

Jawohl, Reichsfuhrer Nediger. The one thing I might possibly request is that could Tricon (which I might tentatively [???] wager has broader appeal than music) go before Imaginary Landscape? Of course, I don't want to be a lemon about this.

We can do it the other way around, I don't have any real preference. I should add that, having looked at some of the answerlines for Imaginary Landscapes, I think it'll have something to offer for many players.

I'm cool with anything and I want to play both anyway. Perhaps if we set a hard "finish by" time (like 11 PM?) and if needed finish things on Sunday.

In my vain wishes, I would rather have Tricon played on Sunday (I won't be here Saturday) since I will almost certainly have played DUST already and probably Imaginary Landscape as well. I'm not sure if you guys are OK with that, but you would have 2 more players for Tricon and it would make my drive more worthwhile than it already is.

A bunch of people have requested to have DUST on Sunday, so I think it makes sense to stick to the current schedule, but if enough people are in your situation, maybe we could do a second run of Tricon on Sunday concurrently with DUST.

We also did a shootout on all but 2 of the Tricon rounds:

Here are the full Tricon stats if you add in the final two packets from Sunday:

Will Nediger: 575
Mike Cheyne: 520
Matt Lafer: 440
Jerry Vinokurov: 330
Shan Kothari: 310
Kenji Golimlim: 135
Sid Dogra: 85
Robert Cernak: 80
Dylan Minarik: 75 (only played last two)
Andrew Wang: 45 (only played last two)
Ryan Westbrook: 45
Ben Forster: 35 (did not play last two)
Todd Maslyk: 5 (only played last two)

Will, myself, Matt, Jerry, Shan, and Ryan all read a packet; Robert read three.
