In honor of the end of my active playing career, I will be "organizing" a mostly trash side event that appropriately plays tribute to me. This is basically an event like Tricon in which participants will write a packet with a very specific distribution, in this case, a distribution that reflects the themes of the IRC packets I have written throughout my career.

What I hope to do is coalesce the packets into an IRC (or I guess, Skype) event that will be read some night or weekend during which nothing is going on (or alternatively, attached to some tournament, but a slapdash IRC format seems most appropriate, given the tournament's theme). I will write a packet and will also read the packets of those who submit them but will not be present--otherwise, I'll play. I have no idea who, if any, plan on submitting packets to this, but I'll offer details as to when and where it will take place when I start getting some other packets (probably not for a while).

DISTRIBUTION (30 tossups--in keeping with a Mike Cheyne packet, these should be short and use as many flavorful anecdotes as possible)

1. 1 tossup on any aspect of American history
2. 1 tossup on American history that only covers the years 1900-1980
3. 1 tossup on American history that only covers the years 1980-2000
4. 1 tossup on American history that involves the concept of "thought"
5. 1 tossup on American history where the answerline is a person
6. 1 tossup on American "political and/or social history"
7. 1 tossup related to memes that were spawned from American or British political or cultural history
8. 1 tossup related to political scandals (don't have to be American)
9. 1 tossup about Disney things
10. 1 tossup about the 1950's (any aspect/country)
11. 1 tossup on any trash topic of your choice
12. 1 tossup on any trash topic of your choice
13. 1 tossup related to the show Saturday Night Live
14. 1 tossup related to the usage of music in film
15. 1 tossup related to the usage of music in film
16. 1 tossup about sports, which should use a clue about injuries
17. 1 tossup related to the show Phineas and Ferb
18. 1 tossup about how a person died
19. 1 tossup where the answerline is a manner of death
20. 1 tossup related to professional wrestling
21. 1 tossup where the answerline is the episode of a TV show (I would suggest making this a common link if possible)
22. 1 tossup related to horror movies
23. 1 tossup that you would expect John Lawrence to do well on but is not about classical music
24. 1 tossup on movies in general
25. 1 tossup on television in general
26. 1 tossup on comic books in general
27. 1 tossup that is a mash-up
28. 1 tossup on either a short story or a play written in the English language
29. 1 tossup on NES/SNES/Sega Genesis video games (can include Game Gear and Game Boy and perhaps Virtual Boy)
30. 1 tossup related to "cultural studies and/or communication theory"

Feel free to use your imagination in writing these tossups. Like obviously you don't have to write on something from Phineas and Ferb, but just use a clue from the show that points to some other answerline.

The following topics are banned from any packet:
-the Aroostook War
-Thomas Merton and/or The Seven Storey Mountain

I don't obviously anticipate mass interest in this, but I'll definitely write at least one, maybe more, packets for it, and I think if at least a few people contribute some things, we could have a fun little event.

There is no real deadline for this right now; we'll see how things go. I know folks probably have a lot on their plates right now with VCUO and Tricon.

What I will probably do is when I finish my packet and start getting a few (?), I will set a firmer deadline, and then try to attach it to something/announce an IRC date. I'm guessing that at least in my neck of the woods, it will be run as like a CAHOOTS-esque informal event.

There will be at least two packets completed for this by the Michigan VCUO. If you are almost done with a packet, please complete it this week so we can run at least the initial version of this event then (future packets of course will be played elsewhere).

Since Michigan VCUO schedule is now pretty stacked and I haven't received any more packets, I'm going to postpone a full running of this until August 23 at UMN (with online reading accompanying). Please submit a packet by that date. If you are definitely writing a packet but won't have it done until then, let me know.

To clear up any confusion:

*The (in person) playing of this tournament will take place on August 24 on the Sunday following Minnesota's VCU Open mirror. Packets should hopefully be in by then.
*Some time after that (the week/weekend) afterwards, I will host an online iteration of it for those who are not in the Minnesota area.

A reminder that if at all possible please get these packets into me by Sunday morning. I currently have three. I know that at least packets from Rob Carson et al, Joe Nutter et al, Will Nediger et al, Matt Weiner et al, and maybe a few others (Andrew Hart? Auroni Gupta?) are in some state of completeness, so for the actual event we should be looking at probably 6+ packets.

For those not in Minnesota, I will read the packet I wrote tonight if there's interest as a preview of this event and also so you can see the level of spice I'm looking for in these.

FRIDAY (starting at 7 PM CST)

The packets will be read in the order you see here in #mcm in the IRC, so come and go as you wish if you have already played some of them. The entire set will be posted afterwards.

Some ground rules:
1. Since there are a lot of packets, we will proceed as quickly as possible. That means, general timing rules will be enforced (i.e., don't buzz in and sit there for 30 seconds, I'll neg you).
2. Do not buzz in and then withdraw; I'll neg you (unless someone else has buzzed in before you and said your answer).
3. The schedule will not be changed in any way. I will not start a packet later, rearrange the order of the packets being read, etc.
4. Many of these packets were read in the IRC at some haphazard point. If there happens to be a packet in which by far the vast majority of the room has heard, I reserve the right to skip it.
5. If you win a packet, you win a Slammy Award.
