FAcT X at Yale (New Haven, CT, 9/27/14)

Post by Grace »

Yale Student Academic Competitions will be hosting our tenth annual Fall Academic Tournament (FAcT) on Yale's campus on Saturday, September 27, 2014. The tournament will use untimed rounds of 20 tossups and bonuses from NAQT's Introductory Invitational Series set (IS-139A).

Location and Parking

In-person registration will begin at 8 A.M. with the aim of starting the opening meeting at 8:45 A.M. and the first round by 9 A.M. The tournament will take place at William L. Harkness Hall (WLH) on Yale's main campus (map), located at 100 Wall Street, New Haven, Connecticut. Teams are strongly encouraged to arrive at 7:45 A.M. to leave time to find parking.

Many Yale parking lots within two to three blocks of WLH are open to the public on weekends for free, including Lots 51, 77, 78, and 78W, shown here. Street parking is also available, as is garage parking in the Grove Street and Audubon Court garages, shown here.

NAQT and PACE Affiliation

Teams that finish in the top 15% of the field will automatically qualify for NAQT's 2015 HSNCT (High School National Championship Tournament), held on the weekend of May 30th in Chicago Illinois. FAcT is gold-certified by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE), which means that the top 20% of the field will qualify teams for this year's PACE National Scholastics Championship in Reston, Virginia, on the weekend of June 6, 2015.

Registration

If you would like to register your high school for FAcT, please fill out this Google form. Please direct any questions to [email protected].
We are capping the FAcT field at 28 teams and will be maintaining a waiting list for teams beyond that. Spots will likely go quickly, so please register as soon as possible. Posts in this thread are fine for "expressing interest" but will not count as registrations. If registered teams indicate that they can bring enough staffers, we may be able to increase the field cap.

Payment

Base fee: $80
Base fee for additional teams (B team, C team, etc.): $75
Buzzer discount: -$5 per operative buzzer system with at least eight working buzzers
Moderator discount: -$10 per experienced scorekeeper or moderator
Minimum fee per school: $60

If you plan to pay by check, the check must be made out to “Y. Student Academic Competitions.” Do NOT make checks payable to “Yale Student Academic Competitions.” Checks should be given to us on the day of the tournament, or, if that's not possible, can be sent to:

If you don't mind, can you change West Egg to Great Neck South? I'm not quite sure who sent the registration form, but I'd like to double-check the information given in the registration form (i'll do this by e-mail though).

Sure, I'm happy to do so. Lucia Geng sent in the registration, although she was unable to access the Google Form due to geographic limitations.

FAcT is now gold-certified by PACE, meaning that the top 20% of teams in the tournament (rounded up to the nearest integer) will qualify for PACE's national high school quizbowl championship (NSC) on the weekend of May 24-25th at the Hyatt Regency Reston outside of Washington, D.C.

We're pleased to announce that the field for FAcT is now expanding to 28 teams. This allows us to accommodate all the teams on our waitlist. For any interested teams: we now have up to three additional open spots in the field.

In the interest of sustainability (and our team's limited printing budget), we will not be supplying paper copies of the set to teams at FAcT. Sorry about that!

Due to the field's increase to 28 teams and a number of teams dropping out of the field, we are now lifting the three teams per school cap. Three spots remain in the FAcT field.

Many of the stats seem to be shifted to the right one column for some reason (like it says 1.00 under 15 whereas it should go under GP)

Also the combined team detail only feature the finals

The stats show that AMSA lost 2 games. AMSA lost only 1 game, the finals, to Lexington. We finished 2nd place at the tourney.
Also, no team played 11 games in my belief. All the final games were "doubled." It shows that we played the same team twice in the individual stats.

Regardless, this was an excellent tournament and hope to play it again next year.

I did find similar stat errors to those Abhinav found, including Lexington B being dealt 1 more loss than it actually had in the final standings.
