Preseason Poll
Preseason Poll
This is the announcement for the preseason poll for the 2014-2015 season.
Please do not post ballots in the thread, but feel free to ask questions about player eligibility, team formation, etc.
Do not vote for high school teams. You can vote for B teams. Ballots must contain 25 teams. E-mail them to me at chey0004 AT umn DOT edu.
Because the preseason is pretty fluid, I recognize that the voting for this particular poll might prove rather eccentric at times (since we cannot completely predict performance), but please don't go crazy. Past success is generally a decent predictor, but also be aware of who's graduated, where new teams are formed, etc. As always, since we cannot predict if people will stick with quizbowl until the season goes on, I'll give voters some slack in say optimistically expecting high schoolers to stick with the game (within reason, don't predict that long dormant grad students will return to playing unless they've said they would).
Remember you are voting based on how the best possible (but still realistic) team would do at a hypothetical nationals-like tournament.
Here are some notes I have regarding changes in the teams ranked at the end of last season. Feel free to correct or add on.
1. Virginia--lose Evan Adams and Dennis Loo, add Eric Xu [note: Matt Bollinger is still here]
2. Yale--lose Matt Jackson and Ashvin Srivatsa, add Isaac Kirk-Davidoff
3. Penn--add Jaimie Carlson, Chris Chiego, and Ben Carlson
4. Chicago A--lose Marshall Steinbaum, Charles Tian, and Doug Graebner, add Chris Ray and James Lasker
5. Maryland A--lose Chris Ray and Isaac Hirsch, add Gaurav Kandlikar
6. Michigan
7. Harvard A--lose Stephen Liu
8. Illinois--lose Aaron Rosenberg and Billy Busse and Austin Listerud
9. J. Sargeant Reynolds--I think this team is now defunct based on Matt Weiner and George Berry being done
10. MCTC
11. MIT
12. Washington--lose Libo Zeng, and apparently Joelle Smart and Mike Bentley
13. Stanford--add Nathan Weiser, Stephen Liu, and Austin Brownlow, as well as Tabitha Walker, Alex Freed, and Jialin Ding.
14. Georgia Tech
15. Alberta
16. Columbia A--add Ben Zhang and Saul Hankin and Kieren Weisert
17. Dartmouth--They lose folks but I forget who (apparently it's Kirk Jing and Cameron Orth and maybe Nick Jensen)
18. Ohio State--lose Jarret Greene and Jasper Lee and I think others like Joe Wells and Max Bucher
19. Maryland B--see Maryland A
20. Michigan State--lose Shan Kothari
21. Berkeley--lose Tanay Kothari, add Ben Gammage
22. Chicago B--see Chicago A
23. North Carolina--add Kisan from Ladue
24. WUSTL
25. Cornell--add Sean McBride, lose Tejas Raje (won't have Ian Lenhoff after first semester)

Yeah, I got off the waitlist so I'll be staying at Harvard until 2017. Sorry, forgot to update that one thread.

Washington loses Libo, Joelle (I think) and me (although there's a slight possibility I might enroll in another class). Chris Grubb, Alejandro Lopez-Lago and Steven Canning are still eligible. No idea if we'll get any surprise freshman prospects.

Re: Preseason Poll
I heard rumors this weekend that Matt Bollinger was going to be back at UVA for a one-year master's. Is that true, or am I merely playing my usual role as the erstwhile conduit for some lies?

Oops, my bad on where Stephen will be next year. I was going off of the college destinations thread.
In hopefully-more-accurate Columbia news, Saul Hankin is starting a master's program there (or at least he was planning to as of HSNCT).

Re: Preseason Poll
That's accurate, though I'm so bad that it hardly bears mentioning. (Thanks for the shout-out, though!) Plus, I plan to be inactive for the fall semester; if I don't fail that first semester, I might play SCT and College History Bowl (if that's happening and if other Columbians wanna play). I'll still show up to practices, staff anything Columbia hosts, and hopefully staff both ICT and ACF Nats. The Predictable Consequences wrote:In hopefully-more-accurate Columbia news, Saul Hankin is starting a master's program there (or at least he was planning to as of HSNCT).

Re: Preseason Poll
I won't speak for Nick, but I know that I'm playing next year and Kris Brown, Charles Jang, and Caleb Amponsah will likely attend tournaments as well. I can further attest that Aaron Pellowski has attended at least one practice per week this summer and he hasn't atrophied as much as I had feared; initial experiments indicate that he can be motivated to play quizbowl if sufficient alcohol is provided.

I guess since we got some votes last year, I'll throw out that we retain myself, Matthew Riggle, Ella Shipp, Alex Malone, Will Walters, and Aaron Whitehead. You can determine which lineup of those people is our best, and whether or not it's worthy of any ranking, for yourselves.

Re: Preseason Poll
I don't know if this is still true, but Charles Tian told me at HSNCT that James Lasker was going to Chicago.

I also got confirmation on this.Joelle wrote:I'm pretty sure Auroni's going to be playing for UCSD this year, if that shakes anything up.
At this point, it's probably worth giving people who already submitted a ballot a chance to do a do-over.

Yes and maybe an updated announcement post so people don't have to read the whole thread?Matthew Jackson wrote:At this point, it's probably worth giving people who already submitted a ballot a chance to do a do-over.

Re: Preseason Poll
For what it's worth, numerous people (a.k.a. JACOB REED) have submitted a revised ballot. I am okay with this.
I would ask that after this week, no matter what bombshells may drop (I don't care if Andrew Yaphe wanders in to say he now plays for Notre Dame), no revised ballots will be accepted starting next Monday. Make it count.
