MIT Fall Academic Tournament (September 20, 2014)

MIT will host the third annual MIT Fall Academic Tournament on Saturday, September 20, 2014.

REGISTRATION
This tournament is open to teams from all geographic areas and levels of experience. Teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please register as soon as possible. The maximum number of teams is 24, and will likely stay at that number. For our convenience and your benefit, we request that you register as soon as you can. LOGISTICS
The tournament will be held on the MIT campus, so this is a great opportunity to bring your students to visit the campuses of MIT, Harvard, and other universities as well as to experience the wonderful city of Boston. Check-in on the morning of the tournament will run from 8:30 to 9:00 AM in room 6-120, which is located on the first floor of MIT’s Building 6. Games will start as soon as possible after everyone has arrived, and will take place in the nearby Building 4. If everything goes smoothly, we anticipate being done by roughly 5:00 PM.

QUESTIONS
We will be using NAQT’s question set 137-A. This question set is written to accommodate less experienced players, so this tournament will be ideal for teams new to quiz bowl or new members of established teams. You can download a sample packet here.

The top 15% of the field will qualify for NAQT’s 2015 High School National Championship Tournament. We will also be seeking affiliation with PACE, so that the top finishers will qualify for PACE’s National Scholastic Championship.

RULES
The game format will have 20 tossup questions answerable by either team. If a team answers a tossup correctly, it will have an opportunity to answer an unrelated multi-part bonus question. There will be no computational math questions.

Each team may have up to six players on its roster, though only four players may play at any given time. If you intend to bring seven or more players, please register another team.

There will be a playoff format to be determined by the number of teams, but it will likely be some form of round-robin. All teams will be guaranteed to play at least 9 games, and all teams will be matched in the playoff rounds against teams of similar skill level.

FEES
The fees for this tournament are as follows:

+$75 first team from a school
+$65 each subsequent team
−$10 discount per working buzzer system
−$10 discount per staffer provided
+$10 to purchase a paper copy of the questions
The minimum fee for a school is $0.

Update: The MIT Fall Academic Tournament has received gold certification from the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence. This means that the top 20% of teams will qualify for PACE's National Scholastic Championship. As before, the top 15% will qualify for NAQT's High School National Championship Tournament.

Lexington A went undefeated to clear the field. AMSA A broke out of a three-way tie at 3-2 in the playoffs to take 2nd, followed by Phillips Exeter in 3rd and Kellenberg A in 4th.

The above four teams have all qualified for NAQT HSNCT. All of them plus 5th-place Gotham have qualified for PACE NSC.
