North Carolina 2014-2015

Post by friendswithdave »

The North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities has set dates for all NCASA quiz bowl events during the 2014-2015 school year.

Oct 25 - Fall Quiz Bowl Tournaments - see note below
Jan 31 - Quiz Bowl Jamborees - kick-off to weekly quiz bowl meets
Mar 7 - Regional Quiz Bowl Tournaments - statewide qualifiers for State Final
Mar 28 - Quiz Bowl State Finals

NCASA will work with member schools interested in hosting tournaments on Oct 25. These will be completely independent tournaments run and administered by host schools. NCASA will help member schools with marketing and tournament organization by providing sample schedules, summary scoresheets, NAQT contacts, and promoting the tournament to member schools. However, these will not be NCASA tournaments and are therefore open to all schools.

The Jamborees, Regional, and State Tournaments are free and open to all NCASA member schools. The school membership fee for 2014-2015 remains unchanged: $150 per school plus $0.25 per enrolled student. School districts that register all secondary schools receive a 50% discount off the registration fee. Guilford, Durham, Iredell-Statesville, and Cumberland County are among those school districts who will register all interested schools. Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Wake County schools are both considering registration of all secondary schools.

We will provide additional details on host schools for all tournaments as they are established.

NCASA has heard from a number of member schools planning to host tournaments on October 25. Note these will be INDEPENDENT tournaments open to all schools. Schools from the following areas are planning to host. Additional host schools may be added.
Raleigh: Millbrook HS
Triad: High Point Central HS
West: Thomas Jefferson Classical
Northeast: schools in Chowan and Pasquotank Counties have expressed interest; exact host school TBD

More details on these tournaments will be shared as they are developed. Again these are independent tournaments where any school may attend any of these events.

This is to announce the Bonfire of the Manatees on November 1, 2014

Raleigh Charter High is pleased to announce that we will host the 7th annual Bonfire of the Manatees on Saturday, November 1, 20143. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 8:30 to 5:00 p.m., though we may well finish earlier. The tournament is open to any high school team(s) that wish to attend.

Affiliation: The tournament will use the University of Maryland’s 2014 tournament

Format: The competition will be nine rounds; every team is guaranteed at least 6 rounds. We’ll decide on the exact playoff format once we see how many teams are signed up. All rounds will be played according to NAQT procedures, with 20 pyramid-style tossups and corresponding bonuses. We will play powers and negs, but there will be no bouncebacks on bonuses. As in years’ past, games will be Swiss-paired throughout the day using our automated scoring program. Trophies will be awarded to the two top teams and book prizes for the top ten individual scorers.

Registration: To register, please e-mail Betsy Newmark at [email protected] with the number of teams and buzzers you wish to bring, and an e-mail address where we may reliably contact you. Soon after, you should receive a confirmation email along with a packet of information regarding the tournament.

Fees: The fee per team will be $65, with a $10 discount for each fully functional buzzer system that has a control box and eight buzzers. Payment may be mailed either prior to November 9, or paid in person on the day of the tournament. Please make all checks out to Raleigh Charter High School.

Teams: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time, with no exceptions. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a half-time substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day—no switching between the A and B teams, for example. Teams may also play shorthanded with fewer players.

Food: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. Further information regarding local food options will be provided along with the confirmation email sent to you after registration.

We hope to see your team at the Bonfire at the Manatees!

With about two weeks remaining until registration closes, 214 schools have registered for NCASA Membership this year. With a record number of schools we expect 80-90 teams will compete in the Regional and State Quiz Bowl Tournaments and other quiz bowl events planned for the winter and spring.

Oct 31 - School Registration closes
Jan 31 - Quiz Bowl Jamborees - kick-off to weekly quiz bowl meets
Mar 7 - Regional Quiz Bowl Tournaments - statewide qualifiers for State Final
Mar 28 - Quiz Bowl State Finals

The Jamborees, Regional, and State Tournaments are free and open to all NCASA member schools. The school membership fee for 2014-2015 remains unchanged: $150 per school plus $0.25 per enrolled student. School districts that register all secondary schools receive a 50% discount off the registration fee. Guilford, Durham, Iredell-Statesville, and Cumberland County are among those school districts who have registered all interested schools.

Member schools may participate in all NCASA competitions at no additional charge. They may also pursue the NCSSM Challenge Cup and NCASA Scholastic Cup presented to the best middle schools and high schools in North Carolina. Visit www.ncscholastic.org for more information or to register your school for membership.

If any North Carolina teams are interested in some fun days of competing in quizbowl, then look no further. Come on up to Roanoke, Virginia for the CSI (November 22, 2014) and the NCIS (February 21, 2015). We will be using the BISB packet at the CSI (more details are located here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... si#p291532) while we are in the process of creating a housewrite for the NCIS in February. Hi everyone! Due to low interest, Wake Forest's Demon Deacon Challenge has pushed down from November 8th to November 22nd. We heard from a couple teams that the current date conflicted with other academic events, so we hope the new date is more accommodating.

Just a reminder to all schools that registration is now open for the January 31 Quiz Bowl Jamborees and the weekly after-school meets.

The Jamboree will be a half-day event running from 9:00 to noon. It will begin with an instructional session to ensure new teams are prepared for the quiz bowl format. Each team will then have three matches. High school and middle school divisions are expected for all sites, and JV divisions (grades 9-10, 6-7) will be formed if demand exists. Host schools include Jordan-Matthews in Siler City and Jay M Robinson MS in Charlotte. Additional hosts are being sought in the Triangle, Sandhills, and Northeast areas.

The weekly after-school meets will begin the week of February 2 and run five weeks. These will occur on a day of the week and time chosen by the coaches in each league. Each meet will have three matches and participating schools will share the hosting responsibilities. We expect to form middle school and high school leagues in the Charlotte area, Triad, Triangle, Sandhills, and Northeast.

The Jamborees and meets are free and open to all NCASA member schools.

Registration will open for the March 28 State Tournament in January. Schools must first compete in the March 7 Regionals to qualify for State. With 230 member schools, we expect 90-100 schools to compete in the tournament. Visit www.ncscholastic.org to register for school membership or to learn more about NCASA quiz bowl.

Celebrity Shoot

Post by rchschem »

<edited to announce reschedule>

Due to low interest we have cancelled the Celebrity Shoot for this spring. We will announce a new fall 2015 date in the coming weeks.

Format:

1. Individual tournament: students (and adults who wish to compete) complete a worksheet individually in 30 minutes. The worksheet contains five lists of people whose point value varies from 2 to 4. Once complete, these sheets are scored and students are ranked on the basis of number correct. These scores decide the afternoon individual playoff participants (the top 64 advance).

2. Team competition: students (and adults) compete in teams of four. There are several events, still biography questions, of different types. Team scores are tallied and awards are given to the top teams.

3. Individual playoff: Players are seeded by individual scores and paired to compete against each other. The winner in each pair advances. Rounds contain ten individuals of different point values.

Awards are given for the top teams, the top students, and the top 9th/10th grade finisher.

This is a great tournament for new players, as there is no buzzing, so everyone gets to show what they know.

Contact Eric Grunden (egrundenATrthighschool.org) to register or for more information.

First team (of 4): $60
Additional players: $5 each
Adults play free!

Right Triangle Open - Raleigh Charter -Feb 21,2015

Post by betsynewmark »

This is to announce the Right Triangle Open on February 21, 2015

We’d like to invite you to Raleigh Charter High School for the 11th Annual Right Triangle Open on Saturday, February 21, 2015. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 8:30 AM to approximately 5:00 PM, though we may finish earlier. The tournament is open to any high school team that wishes to attend.

Format: The competition will be nine rounds for everyone. There will be six preliminary rounds and for the playoffs, the teams will be divided into separate groups with the top four teams playing a Round Robin for the winner based on wins with points scored being used for a tie-breaker. We will be writing the tournament including one Trash round.

As in the past, we will have one all-trash round.

Registration: To register, please e-mail Betsy Newmark at betsynewmark AT gmail DOT com with the number of teams and buzzers you wish to bring, and an e-mail address where we may reliably contact you. Soon after, you should receive a confirmation email along with a packet of information regarding the tournament.

Registration for the NCASA Regional / State Quiz Bowl Tournament opens this Monday, January 19. Middle school and high school divisions will be contested. These tournaments are free and open to all 231 NCASA member schools. Given last year's participation and the growth in NCASA this year, we expect more than 100 teams to compete. Non-member schools may join NCASA to participate in a Regional. The school registration fee is $150 per school plus $0.25 per enrolled student. New schools must complete NCASA school registration by the February 13 tournament registration deadline to be eligible to compete.

The Regional Tournaments are on March 7. The State Final is March 28 hosted by NCSSM in Durham.

Schools must compete at one of six Regional sites to qualify for the State Finals. Regionals will be hosted by the following schools:
- WEST: Hickory HS
- CHARLOTTE AREA: Hickory Ridge MS in Cabarrus County
- TRIAD: High Point Central HS
- TRIANGLE: Cleveland HS in Johnston County
- SANDHILLS: Overhills MS in Harnett County
- NORTHEAST: Site to be determined, likely in Chowan County

Schools may also bring a Junior Varsity team of sixth and seventh or ninth and tenth graders to Regionals.

We will use an NAQT Introductory set for Regionals and an NAQT Invitational set for the State Finals. Visit www.ncscholastic.org for more information or to register for NCASA membership or the tournament.

Due to a lack of response from a sufficient number of regional hosts, we will only be holding the state tournament this year. It will still be 2/28 at UNC, and be open-entry. Registration will open shortly at http://www.ncquizbowl.com

Because North Carolina already also has an NAQT state tournament, it is uncertain if we will continue holding this event in 2016 and beyond. We expect to consult with interested hosts and teams and make a decision soon.

As a player and a student, the NCASA is somewhat unsettling. Some background, I am the captain of a team in rural NC, a team that has been on the edge of existence for the last four years, due to monetary issues. We've only really started competing the last two years, to some strong performances and underdog victories, including book prizes at several comps in the triangle region. We are a small team, never growing above fifteen members, attending a 1200 student high school. In order to join NCASA, our less than 15 member club would cost the school 450 dollars. I understand that question sets do not come cheap, that it takes time and money to organize, but it is ridiculous to ask schools, in their already strapped budgets, to pay this amount for a small batch of students. Obviously the system makes sense to schools that have a higher population competing in the events, but to a school with only a quiz bowl team, it is ludicrous. The rural public schools, already at a disadvantage to the Magnet and Charter schools due to resources and population, are now being barred from the circuit completely. Thank you to the schools that still host independent competitions, each one has been fun and challenging, but the entire NCASA system forgets the average school in North Carolina.

NCASA is trying to add value by lumping a bunch of competitions under one fee. There is a break even point which schools that only have a quiz bowl team will not meet. Sadly you seem to be at that point. Also, sadly, many of the independent tournaments that used to exist are being squeezed out by NCASA's quiz bowl approach, which from an economic perspective independents can't compete with (why pay $60 to attend an independent when you can attend NCASA's events for free, since the school is already registered?). Unfortunately, this is what I expected would happen. I'm happy to see 32 teams at this year's RTO, but this is kind of rare these days. I hope that the teams attending NCASA's quiz bowl events find them well-conducted and effective. I've not been to one, so I have no opinion. The people running NCASA are well-intentioned and the organization's goal of bringing more schools to academic competition are laudable and it seems to be achieving it.
