"Candida" <Buzz>
Leonard Bernstein
The interesting thing was that I was distracted as the category was read so when I heard the answer I was thinking "literature, how could you name Bernstein, and the moderator can't even pronounce it correctly!"
As it turned out, the announced category was "Arts - musical theater", (missed that), and the word was mistyped on the sheet. Still, pretty good!
(OK, the real story is that my player didn't get credit for this because the author forget to delete "Candida", and was actually listing Stephen Sondheim, so my player knew what was going on, but his dopey coach didn't bring a book to prove it)....so it really wasn't a power, and it wasn't a bad neg...it was a good neg, and now I'm just making excuses.....

"True or False..."
Buzz: False!
Haha that hardly counts; it was a tiebreaker question in a Solon packet we were reading in practice. one of the earliest I've done in a tournament was:
"Discovered by Cabrillo..."
Buzz: California
not that impressive, but there have been others I can't quite remember right now...
Actually here's one that comes to mind:
"The blue lantern award..."
Buzz: Iditarod

Just to clarify something that really bugs me. The album is just called "Illinois." I know the album cover says 'Come on! Feel the Illinoise!' but the official title is Illinois. Same with Michigan.pasedpawn wrote:From Auburn fresh-soph in-house questions

College Bowl regionals this weekend. It's kind of sad that these were opening clues for a college tournament. Nevertheless, they were answered quickly.
Reader: "The shortest of Shakespeare's..."
Me: "Macbeth"
Reader: "Although freed by Ms. Watson..."
Me: "Jim" --This one I thought to be more impressive due to the fact I haven't read Huck Finn in years. I thought I'd forgotten everything about it.

No, my point was it should be closer to the giveaway, as anyone who has read Garfield or watched the TV show with any regularity would get it, and Garfield was fairly popular before Jim Davis started drawing that steaming pile of feces that passes for it now.

In our game vs. RM B, somebody on their team got that at the same point. But I think one from the tournament that was even more impressive was in the consolation game vs. Whitman:Matt Morrison wrote:...for the third one, only Will, only Will (unless it was someone on the other team...)
Q: He wears the number 42.
Buzz
A: Mariano Rivera
Yay for sports.

Yeah, well between Steve and Kyle this year, I've seen you guys tear up some of the best powers I've ever seen. This was a question I got in West Virginia format, which is just toss-up; so it wasn't a power, but I thought it was pretty impressive anyways...

No, we aren't going to NAQT nationals because our seniors' graduation is that weekend. We were toying with the idea of taking myself, along with 3 other juniors to the NAQT tournament, but we finally scrapped it. Instead, we're going to Chip Beale's tournament the weekend after. It really is disappointing that we're not going. I really would like to see how we stack up against everyone else in NAQT. I would have liked to get another shot at you guys as well. I wish we could have played you at states just for fun, but it was already late and we had a 3 1/2 hour drive ahead of us. Oh well. Best of wishes though. You guys got a great team.

Both of these occurred in matches that I moderated at our state championship yesterday, and both involved Raleigh Charter.
Q. Peptido... pep....[no pronunciation key]... ya know I'm just gonna spell it. P-E-P-T--- (buzz)
A. gram staining
Q. Valentine---- (buzz)
A. Stranger in a Strange Land
Now, granted, the last two questions had been about sci-fi, but impressive all the same.

Yeah, I don't think I'd even gotten the whole name out yet. Sick, sick, sick.ProsperoSMS wrote:I was coaching the opposing team on this speedy buzz. The first two sf questions had been on I, Robot and The Martian Chronicles, so I think the Heinlein move was logical. I also think the buzz might have more been on Valen- than even the full name.
This reminds me of my all-time favorite buzz, made by my teammate at 2003 HSNCT. We had just put the game out of reach, and there were about 10 seconds left in the game, so I had made a signal not to buzz.DrakeRQB wrote:Q. Q: (moderator horribly butchers the third or fourth word in the question; in any case, the first few words are enough to realize the answer is a non-national geograpic entity)
A: It's Comodoro Rivadavia and the answer's Patagonia
Also, when you play CBI, you get to win buzzer races after four words. "Musicians Gabriel and Frampton." BUZZ Peter
Four words? Bah, that's nothing. Who can forget Dwight Kidder's called buzz:cvdwightw wrote:Also, when you play CBI, you get to win buzzer races after four words. "Musicians Gabriel and Frampton." BUZZ Peter
Dwight: "I'm going to buzz in after one word in the next question."
Moderator: "Cardiopulmonary..."
*BUZZ*
Dwight: "R-E-S-U-S-C-I-T-A-T-I-O-N"
Moderator: "10 points"

Exactly. I was amazed at science bowl the extreme differences from easily predictable questions like this to questions where the eventual champions were even guessing...quite a weird competition...I'll stick with normal quizbowl in the future.Lapego1 wrote:I'm assuming form tesselations...?

At RM this past weekend:
"His first letter was addressed 'Dear Boss'..."
Buzz: Jack the Ripper
In the trash round:
"His chain lights up like a lamp 'cuz now he's back with the camp. He's crawlin similar to an ant..."
Buzz: Paul Wall
haha, the only rap question all day. the other music question I got was "Smoke Two Joints" by Sublime only because my brother owns that CD. I'll look forward to playing some college trash with Dave Porter next year...

Yea, forgot about those. Paul Wall was unfortunately the only one I got though. And yea the Kanye West one was the buzzer race of buzzer races. We were playing TJ E and probably 5 of the 7 players who were playing at the moment all tried to buzz in, but I was beat. I think TJ E only got about 3 other tossups that round.

At practice earlier this year, on either a Patrick's Press or QU question:
"A man leaves his house. He walks five miles south, five miles east--"
*buzz*
White.
...not that a bad joke/riddle has any place being a quiz bowl question anyway, but it was still pretty cool.
