Southern California State Championships - San Diego (4/18)

Post by rahulkeyal »

Westview High School is pleased to announce the Southern California State Championship. SoCal State Champs will be a dual level tournament with two divisions, one Regular division and one Nationals division, co-directed by Rahul Keyal and Lucia Yang.

DATE/TIME: SoCal State Champs shall take place on Saturday, 18 April 2015. Check-in shall begin at 8:00 A.M., and matches shall begin promptly at 9:00 A.M.

LOCATION: SoCal State Champs shall take place on the campus of Westview High School, located at 13500 Camino del Sur, San Diego, CA 92129. Vehicles may park in either lot and persons may enter the campus through the front gates. Matches shall take place in the classrooms in the J and L buildings. A map of the campus can be found here.

REGISTRATION: Teams must register for SoCal State Champs by either (1) filling out this form OR (2) emailing [email protected] with the following information: (1) the school's name, (2) the number of teams, (3) the number of buzzers, (4) the number of moderators, and (5) qualification for the distance or new school discount. Please be sure to specify whether your teams will be participating in the Regular or the National division. There is no team limit until further notice. Registrations shall be confirmed with a reply email. Replying to this thread will not register a team. The registration fee may be paid on-site with either cash or check. Please make all checks payable to Westview Quizbowl.

ELIGIBILITY: All high school and middle school students are welcome to play for the regular division. While there are no requirements for the nationals division, we highly encourage that teams who plan on competing at HSNCT or PACE sign up to participate in the nationals division.

PRICING
REGULAR DIVISION:
$40 for first team
$30 for subsequent teams

NATIONALS DIVISION:
$80 for first team
$70 for subsequent team

DISCOUNTS:
-$5 (off total school cost) for each fully functioning buzzer system
-$10 (off total school cost) for each competent staff member present the entire tournament
-$20 (off total school cost) for schools that have not competed in an NAQT tournament in the past year
-$5 (off total school cost) for every fifty (50) miles travelled one-way, according to Google Maps

Minimum fee: $20 per team

TOURNAMENT FORMAT: The tournament shall use the NAQT IS-146 set and shall adhere to official NAQT rules, with the exception that matches shall be run as untimed halves of ten questions each. A preliminary round robin in the morning shall be followed by round robin playoffs in the afternoon based on win-loss records. Ties shall be resolved on the basis of points per bonus within brackets, and ties crossing different brackets shall be resolved on the basis of points per game.

As stated in the NAQT HSNCT (High School National Championship Tournament) qualification rules, the top 15% of the field will qualify for the 2015 HSNCT held in Chicago, Illinois. Due to the tournament being a State Championship, the highest placing team (not school) that has not yet qualified for HSNCT will also qualify. Note that for qualifying, teams that are in the Nationals division will be automatically placed higher than teams in the Regular division. Since the tournament is Platinum Certified by PACE, the top 25% of the field will also qualify. This will also prioritize the nationals division.

SIDE EVENT: Muse III is a just-for fun individual side event put together by Eddie Kim. More information about the side event can be found here.

FOOD: A light breakfast shall be provided in the lobby, and eateries exist within a comfortable walking distance of the campus. Food options are within a comfortable 5-10 minute walking distance and include places such as Albertsons, Rubio’s, Subway, Pick Up Stix, Starbucks, Luna Grill, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, etc.

INQUIRIES: Any inquiries can be resolved through emailing [email protected] or posting on the SoCal Quiz Bowl Facebook group.
