George Oppen @ Columbia University (2/21/15)
The quizbowl team of Columbia University is pleased to invite you to the northeast site of George Oppen. This tournament will take place in Hamilton Hall on February 21st, 2015. Please be there by 8:30; rounds will begin at 9:00 and we would like to start as promptly as possible. Please e-mail me at [email protected] to register or if you have any questions.
Base Fee - $120 for open teams, $70 for college teams
-$10 per working buzzer
-$15 for an approved staffer
Given the nature of the teams here, travel discounts can be worked out on a case-by-case basis
All teams must pay by the day of the tournament. We prefer to accept payment in person right before the tournament starts, but we will accept checks by mail ahead of time if your procedures require it. Unless arrangements are worked out in advance, teams who do not pay by the day of the tournament will be charged a $25 penalty and will have two weeks to pay their total amount before we start mailing letters to your school administration about it.
We can accept cash, personal checks made out to "Columbia University" with "Quiz Bowl" on the memo line, or checks from school, school district, or quizbowl club funds. We have no ability to process purchase orders, credit cards, Paypal, or any other forms of payment. Bringing forms of payment outside of the three listed will be considered nonpayment and subject you to the $25 late payment penalty.

What is the interest level in playing Eyes at this site?

I would be interested, and I have a friend who is explicitly interested in coming to play Eyes (and to go to NYC and stuff).

I would be interested in playing Eyes as well. I can ask my teammates if they'd be interested in it

Re: George Oppen @ Columbia University (2/21/15)
Ok, seems like we have a good enough handful of people interested in doing this. Because we should be able to run Eyes fairly quickly, with a small number of people in a single room, I will advocate for powering through without a dinner break. Unless interest expands significantly, let's plan on running this as a shoot-out, beginning immediately after the main event. If there is significant opposition to this plan, please let me know.

Our train leaves at 7pm, so if the tournament runs late, running Eyes after wouldn't be great. Any chance we could run at least part of it during lunch and order pizza or something?

I have the feeling that trying to run Eyes during lunch might be the thing that makes the tournament run late, though if people want, and if people are committed to moving and eating efficiently, we could do a few rounds.hydrocephalitic listlessness wrote:Our train leaves at 7pm, so if the tournament runs late, running Eyes after wouldn't be great. If lunch is one hour, there should be plenty of time to play more than half of Eyes. I'd strongly personally prefer to have more time available after the tournament.

I'm in the area and might be interested in playing this on Saturday... any update on what teams look like or if there's space for a (bad) free agent?

As far as I know, all teams currently have four players, though feel free to ask around.historical pun wrote:I'm in the area and might be interested in playing this on Saturday... any update on what teams look like or if there's space for a (bad) free agent?

Yale does have space on its teams, but we're a little loath to pay the "open team" registration fee. How would taking on a free agent work, payment-wise, Aidan?

If the team doesn't all go to the same school, that's an open team, as far as I know.Grace wrote:Yale does have space on its teams, but we're a little loath to pay the "open team" registration fee. How would taking on a free agent work, payment-wise, Aidan?

We currently have only three players on our team (and already have a non-student, so no need to worry about fee increases).historical pun wrote:I'm in the area and might be interested in playing this on Saturday... any update on what teams look like or if there's space for a (bad) free agent?

Re: George Oppen @ Columbia University (2/21/15)
I think that our team and Harvard's both ended up X-2, but one of Harvard's losses was a forfeit. Perhaps we can organize a final by Skype sometime if we want to really settle this.
Regardless, this tournament was crazy and entertaining to play. Perhaps the battlefield was a bit muddy, but that didn't detract too much from the experience on the day - it was great playing with Evan, Doug, and Chip and seeing some of the best of the Northeast out in force again.

Major thanks to Columbia, who ended up making this a pretty enjoyable (well, as enjoyable as it could have been) experience after all.
Also, Eyes was great, and Wilton Rao is a true champion.

I love the idea that we tied for the most powers in the field while going 4-6, but I'm afraid it is just that- an idea. I have us with only 3 (or maybe four, my scorekeeping is not very good) powers in round 4, as opposed to 10 (!!!).

That might work for me, though my own schedule is fairly inflexible (I wouldn't presume to speak for anyone else). Would Saturday morning-ish - say 10AM - suit y'all?hydrocephalitic listlessness wrote:We're in—this weekend sometime?Periplus of the Erythraean Sea wrote:I think that our team and Harvard's both ended up X-2, but one of Harvard's losses was a forfeit. That should probably be okay for me as well, since I'm very sick and don't expect to be up to much this weekend.
Be sure not to use Packet 13, since I think I heard the first tossup from that one.
