Postseason Poll

Post by Cheynem »

Time for our last poll of the year.

Player poll is coming as well. Give me a little time on that.

Please submit a ballot of 25 teams (no more, no less) to me by May 6 (two weeks). You can vote for B teams, you cannot vote for high schools.

Here are the last poll results, along with a note of where they finished at ICT and ACF Nationals.

#1 Virginia (1st at ICT, tied for 4th at Nats)
#2 Penn (2nd at ICT, 1st at Nats)
#3 Chicago (3rd at ICT, 2nd at Nats)
#4 Stanford A (5th at ICT, tied for 4th at Nats)
#5 Maryland (4th at ICT, 3rd at Nats)
#6 Michigan (6th at ICT, 6th at Nats)
#7 TIE between MIT (8th at ICT, tied for 7th at Nats) and UCSD (7th at ICT, tied for 7th at Nats)
#9 Harvard (17th at ICT, tied for 15th at Nats)
#10 Yale (9th at ICT, tied for 15th at Nats)
#11 Columbia (tied for 11th at ICT, tied for 9th at Nats)
#12 WUSTL (tied for 11th at ICT, 14th at Nats)
#13 Alberta (did not play ICT, 13th at Nats)
#14 TIE between Georgia Tech (10th at ICT, did not play Nats) and Illinois (18th at ICT, 12th at Nats)
#16 Minnesota (tied for 20th at ICT, tied for 9th at Nats)
#17 North Carolina (tied for 15th at ICT, did not play Nats)
#18 Berkeley (tied for 20th at ICT, tied for 15th at Nats)
#19 Stanford B (3rd at ICT DII, tied for 9th at Nats)
#20 Northwestern (tied for 15th at ICT, tied for 18th at Nats)
#21 NYU (14th at ICT, tied for 27th at Nats)
#22 Dartmouth (did not play either national)
#23 William and Mary (tied for 11th at ICT, tied for 18th at Nats)
#24 MIT B (9th at ICT DII, tied for 22nd at Nats)
#25 Brown (did not play either national)

Here are the (eligible) teams who finished in the top 25 at ICT or Nats who were not ranked.

Ottawa: 18th at ICT, 30th at Nats
Vanderbilt: tied for 22nd at ICT, did not play Nats
Western Kentucky: tied for 22nd at ICT, did not play Nats
Arizona State: 24th at ICT, did not play Nats
New Mexico State: 25th at ICT, did not play Nats
Berkeley B: 11th at ICT DII, 20th at Nats (not really the same team)
Oxford: did not play ICT, 21st at Nats
Chicago B: 2nd at ICT DII, tied for 22nd at Nats
McGill: tied for 27th at ICT, tied for 22nd at Nats

I will try my best to go out and vote for it this time, but I have one question. When it comes to B teams, what should I do? Should I go with the most consistent B team roster all year round, or the best roster that a side could have? Because for some teams (like Berkeley B) this could have a significantly different answer.

Peter, I'd personally vote for the strongest possible combination of the B team that played tournaments this year. Berkeley B, for example, would probably be the ICT team and not the ACF Nationals team I'd consider when making out my ballot.

It's actually the other way around. The ACF team was the stronger team.

Does anybody happen to know what teams were playing shorthanded at either tournament?

William & Mary was missing Alex Frey at ICT and James Cole at Nats, so we didn't have our full A team at either.

Minnesota split its regular A team at ICT between DI and DII (and achieved 20th in DI and 17th in DII); I would venture that the t9th place finish at Nats is roughly indicative of their full team's strength.

At ACF Nationals, Ottawa was notably missing Dennis Beeby, who put up a PPG 3/4 that of Jordan Palmer's at ICT.

McGill's history/math/econ/art player, Sam Baker, couldn't play this year because he forgot to apply for his student visa.

We replaced him with Daniel Lovsted (our top DII scorer) for ACF Regionals, but he couldn't make it to Nats.

Nobody's ranking us anyway, but I swear that my other teammates have been busy this year and will play MUT with me. Probably. Maybe.

I also swear I'm not terrible at hypothetically playing hard questions.

Harvard was missing SRIRAAAAAAM at ICT, resulting in a 90% reduction in maidens swooning during Harvard games.

Whoops. I didn't notice that it said that the B team was in DII.

I think DII ICT champion Texas should at least be up for consideration, considering Chicago B and Stanford B are both in the OP.

this might be the case, but the difference between these teams is that ACF Nats vs ICT, both Chicago B and Stanford B had an additional player who wasn't DII eligible, and in both cases said player led their team in scoring

FWIW, Texas A&M only had two members of the A team at ICT (and one of those was playing DII). The only tournament where our full A team played was ACF Regionals.

Why vote for any of the Texas teams when you can just toss my team your 25th place vote as a retirement gift? Sounds like a better plan to me!
