Subject Rankings Thread

Post by naan/steak-holding toll »

Since there was discussion about ranking players on individual subjects as well as overall, it would seem appropriate to make a thread for such discussions.

I'm hesitant to make any actual specific-subject rankings since I haven't gotten to see most people play this year, but I might as well throw out a few lists of generally recognized top players in each category. Note that each list is not made in any particular order, just the order in which people came to mind (which probably coincides with how good said people are at the category) and is probably missing a number of people. Relatively quickly, off the top of my head:

Literature
John Lawrence
Matt Bollinger
Will Nediger
Jordan Brownstein
Tommy Casalaspi
Evan Adams
Saajid Moyen
Auroni Gupta
Jacob Reed
Chris Ray
Chris Manners
Will Holub-Moorman

Science
Eric Mukherjee
Tommy Casalaspi
Auroni Gupta
Adam Silverman
Andrew Wang
Brian McPeak
Max Schindler
Sriram Pendyala
Rafael Krichevsky
Shan Kothari
Sinan Ulusoy
Stephen Eltinge
Richard Yu
Austin Brownlow
James Lasker
Ewan Macaulay
Akhil Garg
Daniel Hothem

History
Matt Bollinger
Jordan Brownstein
Chris Ray
Eric Mukherjee
Auroni Gupta
Stephen Liu
Trevor Davis
J.R. Roach
Patrick Liao
Chris Chiego
Myself (?)
Richard Yu
Evan Adams
Dan Puma
Austin Brownlow
Ben Zhang
Michael Coates

Myth
Stephen Liu
Matt Bollinger
Eric Mukherjee
Auroni Gupta
Ben Zhang
Chris Ray
Max Schindler

Philosophy
John Lawrence
Matt Bollinger
Shan Kothari
Will Nediger
Auroni Gupta
Chris Ray

Visual Arts
Stephen Liu
John Lawrence
Matt Bollinger
Saajid Moyen
Auroni Gupta
Will Nediger
Eric Mukherjee
Chris Ray

Auditory Arts
John Lawrence
Jacob Reed
Saajid Moyen
Tommy Casalaspi
Auroni Gupta
Matt Bollinger
Shan Kothari
Rafael Krichevsky
Will Nediger
Will Holub-Moorman
Natan Holzman
Julian Fuchs

Geo and CE
Isaac Kirk-Davidoff
J.R. Roach
Michael Coates
Dan Puma
Kenji Golimlim

Again, I'm probably missing a lot of people that should be mentioned in these general lists, which are probably not worth much anyways unless they're consolidated into Top 5s or whatever. It might also be better to think of sub-categories within some of these categories, as well - for example, Stephen Eltinge is better at physics than Andrew Wang, and Andrew's better at biology.

He hasn't played enough games against Americans in general for him to be recognised by most of the people voting in this, but Ewan MacAulay is really good at science, especially chemistry. He got *all* of the science in our game against Virginia at ACF Nats this year despite our never having practiced on questions that hard before, and he was consistently 30ing and getting super early buzzes on the chemistry throughout the whole tournament.

I was actually going to post about Ewan but this guy beat me to it. Also Austin brownlow, Richard Yu, Daniel Hothem, James Lasker all bring stuff to the table science wise

On a similar note, Akhil Garg from VCU got all the science against UCSD at Nats, and probably deserves mention.

I plopped some of the names that got mentioned onto the OP and will continue to do so. I guess that may not be useful if we want to think about "who is really top 5-10 material in this category" but still, the names are definitely worth a mention.

Since nobody outside the northeast has seen me play for about a year, I guess I'll justify my ranking: I get 20 or 30 on almost all history bonuses and powered just over half the European and World history at the last regular tournament I played (STIMPY). I'm not very good at American history, though, and am pretty reliant on my teammate Charles for us to get tossups in that category consistently. It's worth noting that the Northeast doesn't really have super-strong competition on history as much as science, arts, and literature, though Isaac Kirk-Davidoff, Jacob Reed, Robert Chu, Ben Zhang, and Neil Gurram (EDIT: and duh, Evan Adams!) are all worth mentioning as solid to strong history players; I have no idea how I'd do against top competition these days.

For sure, along with Chris Chiego. In my limited experience, most of the usual suspect top-level generalists are solid at the subject as well.

Nah. I've gotten the occasional good buzz in those areas based on research methods or the very rare political science stuff, but I have nothing on Econ/Psych/Sociology/Antho.

In contrast, Saajid is an exceptionally good econ player with lots of real knowledge. I'd agree about most generalists being pretty solid on SS; Eric improved throughout the year on Psych and Sociology.

No love for the NAQT categories (CE and Geography)? I'd put Mark Arlidsen high up there for those.

I mean, there's a fine line between a top 10 player in a certain subject and getting many good buzzes in that subject. I don't think Will really would intend to have this thread degenerate into people telling stories about sick buzz moments or even "x is good at y too" en masse. Nothing personal meant, of course.

I've been to an awful lot of UMD practices, haven't I...not that this trend is going to end over the summer, of course.

In other news, Adam's kind of right in that I would like to see some real top 10 rankings or more in-depth discussions of what people know/are good at besides "I've seen a few good buzzes here and there" especially from people who can talk about their teammates or themselves (as Chris Chiego did above). I can understand an aversion to posting such rankings in public, though.

I added a "Geo and CE" section to the OP.

Although his questionable strategy of not buzzing when he knows the answer costs him some points, Chris Manners is an excellent lit player. His breadth of knowledge in the category is surpassed by few players on Will's list and certainly makes him a candidate for the top 10.

I believe Aidan Mehigan is quite good at lit, as well?

As you saw in our game at Nats, I'm pretty good at questions that consist of throwing lines of poetry at the players, because I read and memorize a lot of poetry for fun. SUBMIT had tons of delightful questions of this type, so I did inordinately well at that tournament. In all other respects, though, I'm just a pretty standard ok-ish college lit player and nowhere near most of those mentioned unthread.

Someone please write another tournament that approaches lit like SUBMIT did!

Jay is indeed great at history and geography, but I would point out (sorry, Jay!) that he didn't win the last Geo Mon. On the winning team were myself (not deserving a ranking), Leslie, and Dennis Beeby (who is also very deserving of mention for both those subject areas).

I highly recommend travelling to the South for quizbowl: there are cool people there, and it's one of, if not the, best place to play quizbowl in my opinion. How's that for North-South relations, Kissinger?

I haven't really studied science for quizbowl purposes in like two years. As a result my science abilities have diminished a bit in my favourite areas but way more in chemistry and biology, which makes sense since my math/physics knowledge is as real as it comes and most biology/chemistry that I "knew" is quizbowlese. I now have a bit of a computer science game although it is somewhat spotty. Is that good enough for top 10-15 in science? Well yeah, because 11 years of formal collegiate math and science education is good for something (in a quizbowl sense), but I'm probably on the lower end of that range these days.
