With Ted's tentative sign-up, the field is now full. However, please feel free to continue signing up, if you are still interested, and you will be added to the waitlist. (And many of the people who have signed up already are also "tentative"; so it seems like there is a good chance that spots will open up.) If there is enough demand to warrant expanding the field size, I will consider that; but I assume that this field size will probably hold, given interest in past Literature side tournaments.

I don't care about tournament formats as such, but I am a little disheartened by the fact that the field is capped and the limit was reached some six months out from CO. I'm very interested in playing this tournament, but apparently not checking the boards every day is enough to potentially put you out of an opportunity to play an event you've played for years.

You should sign up. It's likely enough people will drop that you can play now.

Yeah, I'm signing up. As I understood it, posting in the thread is sufficient to make that happen. I'm just saying, I don't really get the rationale for capping the field here. You can always expand the bottom room, or just have an extra one.

Anyone who is listed as "tentative" in the first post should confirm whether they plan on playing this. Ted is the only person registered who isn't playing or moderating the CO main event, so I'll e-mail him to check if he still plans on coming. But frankly, if there remain only 1-3 of you on the waitlist, I'm happy to just let you guys play, so long as people don't mind a couple of rooms with nine people instead of eight in the initial seeding round (and we have buzzers that can accommodate that), and a couple of more people in the bottom room for the playoffs.

Please put me on the waitlist.

Also, respectfully, and despite my own misgivings about the format from playing Gorilla Lit last year, there is no reason to prohibitively cap the field, since you are already weighting the performance of players across rooms so heavily. You can accommodate almost all interested parties (ironically, everyone at this point BUT myself) just by adding two people each to the fifth and sixth rooms. Ideologically, there doesn't seem to be any need to limit the number of players in the last room, other than due to buzzer limitations. I hope you will consider this perspective. I don't see a need to prevent anyone who is interested from playing from doing so.

The fee will be $10 per person.

Since Ted has informed me that he can't make it, I've expanded the field to 36 players, so that no one is wait-listed any longer. I've adjusted the room sizes accordingly.

I'll eventually figure out what size rooms to use for the seeding round, but I'm leaning towards 6 rooms of 6 people.

The seeding packet is now 30 tossups instead of 40 tossups. The cap has increased from 8 lines to 8.5 lines, before powermark. I've adjusted the room sizes to make up for the fact that the field is now 36 players.

I have updated my first post to reflect the current field, as I understand it to be. I still have not heard confirmation from Shan Kothari, Chris Manners, and Jacob Reed that they are still planning on playing this. If you are one of those people, please let me know about this ASAP.

If you'd like to staff this tournament and haven't told me, please let me know.

Because we have a very full schedule on Sunday, and I want this tournament to run as efficiently as possible, so that the history tournament doesn't start too late, here's what we're going to do:

I'm going to place a centralized order with Pizza Capri for lunch on Sunday. Pizza Capri has vegan/dairy-free and gluten-free options. The buy-in for the centralized lunch is $6. I've created a survey to specify your pizza dietary needs (https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TT9KLGT), which I will keep open until I wake up on Friday the 17th, and place the order.

I will deputize a member of the UChicago team to be in Cobb and handle the delivery, in case I am still playing the Visual Arts tournament when it arrives. Once the Visual Arts tournament ends, we will immediately start the seeding round of RILKE. If you are not playing the Visual Arts tournament and you are playing RILKE, make sure you plan to get there in time.

After the seeding round is done, players can proceed to the control room to get slices of pizza, while I figure out the assignments for the playoffs. However, players will be asked to take their pizza with them into their first playoffs match, and eat while they play.

To make this absolutely clear: There is not going to be a lunch break on Sunday. If you are playing RILKE and you are not opting in to the centralized lunch, that's fine, but you should plan on bringing a lunch that you can eat while playing quizbowl, because I am not stopping this tournament so you can eat.

If people not playing or staffing RILKE want to opt in to the centralized lunch anyway, for convenience's sake, they are entirely welcome to do so. The buy-in price is the same.

And yes, I too mourn the fact that Pizza Capri is not Uncle Joe's, but I know from experience that Uncle Joe's is too slow to serve and too messy to eat to facilitate the efficiency that this Sunday will require.

I forgot to mention this in my response and I'm not sure what your exact plans are, but my dietary needs are "not Chicago-style pizza", so please order one or more that satisfy that criterion.

I'm fine in principle with that. But the bottom room has 10 people, and I'm not sure if we have a buzzer set at this tournament that can accommodate more than 10. So, that would mean one person in the bottom room always playing slap-bowl.

With Shan's drop, the field should now be a perfect 36, and we're locked in.

I just sent an e-mail to all of those players and staffers for this tournament who have not yet filled out the pizza survey, reminding them to do so. I am going to order only enough pizza to feed those who signed up for pizza. So, if you're planning to participate in this buy-in, please fill out the survey by tomorrow night.
