Preseason Poll

Post by Cheynem »

This is the announcement for the preseason poll for the 2015-2016 season.

Please do not post ballots in the thread, but feel free to ask questions about player eligibility, team formation, etc.

Do not vote for high school teams. You can vote for B teams. Ballots must contain 25 teams. E-mail them to me at chey0004 AT umn DOT edu. Ballots should be in by the end of Labor Day weekend.

Because the preseason is pretty fluid, I recognize that the voting for this particular poll might prove rather eccentric at times (since we cannot completely predict performance), but please don't go crazy. Past success is generally a decent predictor, but also be aware of who's graduated, where new teams are formed, etc. As always, since we cannot predict if people will stick with quizbowl until the season goes on, I'll give voters some slack in say optimistically expecting high schoolers to stick with the game (within reason, don't predict that long dormant grad students will return to playing unless they've said they would).

Remember you are voting based on how the best possible (but still realistic) team would do at a hypothetical nationals-like tournament.

This is last year's Top 25; consult the "where are you going to college" thread for info about player movements.

For the purposes of Illinois Tristan and Alex Fregeau and I return with a magical fourth TBD. Austin is back in school however and says he's interested in playing NAQT.

Since our team wasn't on last year's poll, but may fit in this one, I'll go ahead and share Duke's roster. John Stathis and I will both be back from last year's team, and freshman Gabe Guedes will be joining our team this year. Our fourth will likely be either Adil from our SCT team or Shaunak from our DII ICT team.

Louisville is under the impression that our A team will at least consist of Kurtis Droge, Ramapriya Rangaraju, and myself. In the fall our 4th is still undecided (perhaps Megan Seldon? I'm not sure to be honest,) but is likely to be Nick Hammond pending his return to school in the spring.

I've enrolled at the U of Houston, taking some math/CS classes as I prepare for grad school.

I might play whatever things I'm eligible for, which probably only means SCT.

Also worth mentioning: I'm pretty sure Connor Wood from Maggie Walker and Cathy Xue from Montgomery Blair are off to Yale next year, though I have no idea how active they will be (probably better to ask actual Yalies).

All of MIT's A-Team (save Stephen Eltinge) should be there next year, as well as all of their B-Team; to my understanding, team composition for next year remains undecided.

EDIT: Justin Nghiem from Arcadia will be at Berkeley.

I've updated my list above with the names people have posted. If future details about teams are revealed before the poll ends, please post or email to me in the format "team name: name 1, name 2..." so I can just copy/paste that into my list. If it's a new detail about a team already in the list, include all the names already on there.

Oxford lost Henry Edwards and Ewan MacAulay from its ACF Nationals team. Despite losing our top scorer, though, I'm fairly confident our team this year will be stronger than it was last year. The expected A team comprises some proper subset of me, Charles Clegg, George Corfield, Oliver Clarke, Zachary Vermeer and Daoud Jackson.

This post isn't about anything related to a team who could be ranked, but I feel it's important enough to list here.

I’ll be continuing with the stats-collecting project I’ve been doing for the past few years. This years spreadsheet can be found here. I’d appreciate some help, as I find I have trouble keeping this list updated at times (and I believe Dennis Beeby is nearing his graduation-thanks so much for all of your help last year, Dennis!).

EDIT: Dennis has joined up again, but I would like to have one more person on board for this. Let me know if you're interested!

FWIW, and by no means should this appreciably influence the poll, UCF's main team(s) (by the Spring semester) will likely be some combination of Virginia Ruiz, Zach Foster, Cassandra Logan, Cody Johansen, and me.

UF isn't really identified here, either, but will likely have its main team(s) consisting of Taylor Harvey, Jack Brady, Alex Shaw, Julio Gonzalez-Zuluaga, and Matt DeJong.

Anyone with Chatzilla can set their client to log whatever channel the discussion is in. Some other IRC programs should also have this functionality as well.
