Crusader Cup, N. Greenville Univ. (SC) 11/7/15

Post by eldermaas »

North Greenville University (Tigerville, SC) will hold the tenth Crusader Cup tournament on November 7, 2015. This is a rescheduled date after the first tournament was postponed due to heavy rains and flooding. Changes to the original post have been marked with bold and underline.

The tournament is open to teams officially affiliated with a high school. Teams from middle schools or junior highs are also welcome though please note that we (again) cannot guarantee a jv division yet. Teams from home school cooperatives or without official school sanction will be considered on a case by case basis.

As this is a Fall tournament, we will be using an introductory invitational NAQT set (IS 149-A). The questions will be pyramidal is structure, and the bounceback rule will apply.

We will currently cap the tournament at 16 teams, opening the field as we gain additional readers. We are not presently dividing the field into varsity and jv, but teams who may be interested in bringing junior varsity teams should let us know. If we have sufficient interest in (and staffing for) a jv field (5-6 teams), we can create one. An award will be given to the top three varsity teams and the individual high scorer (and top jv team, as necessary).

Eligibility: Teams will consist of up to four players at a time, with no more than two alternates. Substitutions may be made only between rounds, not during matches. Additionally, once the tournament begins, rosters will be set. Eligible players must be currently enrolled in the school/cooperative for whom they compete. Junior varsity players (if we divide the field) must be 6th-10th graders currently enrolled in the school/cooperative for which they compete. Any team with an 11th or 12th grade player will be considered varsity regardless of the other players on the team.

Format: The tournament will be an untimed competition consisting of rounds of 20 toss-up and 20 3-part bonus questions with bounce back bonuses. We expect to run the tournament as a modified round robin. Teams will be divided into brackets and will play games within that bracket (with potentially cross-bracket games) for the first five rounds. After lunch, teams will be ranked according to win-loss record (PPG and head-to-head used if necessary) and will play comparable teams from other brackets. The top team(s) from each bracket will be paired to play in a 3-game playoff. The winner will be the team from the top bracket with the best playoff record (no advantaged finals). One third place trophy will be awarded to the winner of the other semi-finalist game. An award will be given to the individual high scorer.

Time: We will begin with registration at 8:30am in Hayes Ministry Center (across from the original location), with opening comments at 9:00am and play at 9:15. We expect to finish by 3:00pm. Most likely, the tournament will run seven rounds. We will break for lunch around 12:30pm.

Cost: The base fee for the tournament is $70 per team (4 starting players and 2 alternates) with a $10 discount for each additional team. A $5 discount is available for each working lockout buzzer (up to two buzzers per team) and $10 discount for an experienced full-time reader (If you have a coach or a graduate who would be an able reader for the tournament, please consider having that person volunteer). While teams may elect to pay ahead of time, final registration and payment will be done at check-in. Question sets will not be provided but may be purchased after the tournament ($10). Packets will be provided free to teams who were registered for the tournament as of 10/1/15 (when we first sent out notice that there may be flooding). Lunch vouchers for the Todd Dining Hall may be purchased ($6 per person) at check-in, or teams may choose to pay at the door ($7.01). Coaches (1 per team) and volunteers will have their meals provided by NGU. If you are bringing more than one coach, and the additional coach will not be serving as a reader, please let us know, as we may be able to provide an additional voucher.

Additional Notes: We request that you e-mail your intention to attend (with the number of teams, buzzers, and coaches/volunteers). Those interested in attending may contact James Washick (nguquizbowl at gmail.com or jwashick at ngu.edu).

With the rain from Joaquin causing flooding in the area, numerous teams had to cancel, so we have had to postpone the tournament but have rescheduled it for November 7. Our apologies to those who came out to the campus in the downpour. We will try to provide a great (and much drier) tournament soon.

The A team from Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy took first place at North Greenville University's Crusader Cup X. Southside High's A team took second with Spartanburg picking up the third place trophy. Sam F from Spartanburg went home with the high scorer award. Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy C was the top JV team in a field heavy with varsity teams.
