ACRONYM IX @ HSNCT - May 29, 2016

Post by InvadErGII »

IMPORTANT LINKS

Register to Play | Staff Signup | Free Agent Shenanigans

I'm incredibly excited to announce an official mirror of ACRONYM IX, to be held as a part of the 2016 HSNCT weekend. The tournament will take place on Sunday, May 29th, starting approximately two hours after the end of the HSNCT finals. This will be the evening before Memorial Day, so if you're looking for a reason to spend an extra night in Dallas (or just to play some extra quiz bowl), this tournament is for you! Details of the question set is available in the global announcement thread. Details on this tournament are below:

REGISTRATION AND FEES

Registration for this tournament is now open here. You can view the current field here. Registration requires some sort of team and affiliation on the NAQT website, but you can create an ad-hoc school/association for this purpose. Made-up names are also fine, but keep them reasonably appropriate.

The field will have a cap of 64 48 teams and will be open to anyone who wishes to play. Depending on how the field shakes out and registrants' feedback, splitting into 'high school' and 'open' divisions is a possibility.

Fees will be as follows:

Base fee: $90 per team
$10 discount per working buzzer system
$15 discount per moderator
Maximum total discount: $30

OTHER STUFF

Are you able to staff this? Sign up here!

Want to throw your name out as a free agent or find a team to join? Use this spreadsheet!

I am not certain exactly how this tournament will be run - depending on size, it may end up using either a card system or typical prelim/playoff seeding. Though I'm not sure of a specific format, I'm comfortable guaranteeing at LEAST six games for all teams, and will be shooting for more than that.

I believe this has the potential to be the largest trash tournament in quiz bowl history. If that ends up being the case, we'll need a whole bunch of moderators and other staffers. If you're planning on being in Dallas and would like to help out, let me know! If you'd like to play instead, that's cool too. If you'd like to organize/play in a local mirror and then staff it at HSNCT, that works as well - it's like doing it once, but double! Each non-team moderator will receive $15 and my eternal gratitude.

More details, including a more precise schedule and other stuff I forgot to mention in this thread, are coming soon.

I look forward to seeing a whole bunch of you in Dallas!

I'm pretty sure I'll be there as a staffer and I'm pretty sure I'll put a team together or offer my services as a free agent to another team.

Registration for this tournament is now open here.

Additionally, you can view the current field here.

If you're interested in playing, please note that registration will close at midnight the night before the tournament at 11:00pm central time on Thursday, May 26th. The field is also expected to fill up quickly, so if you want to play, make sure to register as soon as possible! If you'd like to register to staff and won't be part of a team, let me know as soon as possible.

Is this limited to actual teams of high schoolers, or is it open?

On the NAQT website, you have be affiliated with a school to register and can only register a team for the school, so they'll have to modify that somehow to allow open teams to play.

Interpret "school" to mean "school or ad hoc group", creating one if you need to.

So I'm trying to register a team ("tacocat") but it looks like I'm getting a server error; at any rate, I've tentatively signed up myself, Virginia Ruiz, Sean Platzer, and Harlea Perdue for this, but that sort of assumes we're all at HSNCT staffing this year.

I will say that I would have liked the option of not officially linking my NAQT account to a one-off trash team (it seems that I had to create a new account for this, and a fake "school").

The field for this tournament currently sits at 28 teams (nearly half-full!) and is regularly adding new teams. Thanks to everyone that has signed up so far! If you're interested in playing in this, I recommend signing up soon - there's a good chance this will fill up well before HSNCT weekend.

Additionally, I have set up a spreadsheet for prospective staffers. If you'll be in Dallas on Sunday night and wish to help staff this event, you can sign up for that right here.

I registered my team as "Hamilton Academical", my existing NAQT alias for fake things, but we would like to play as "HiiiPowers", in a reference that is only five years old.

I would like to register as a free agent. The list only shows teams, so I'm not sure who is actually registered, but if someone needs a fairly decent player I am good to go! thx
Apparently all my other email address have been registered with other accounts so now I am using my work email because I forgot my other password, but please email me at [email protected] if you need me

If you either:

1.) need a sports and video game player, or
2.) are Joe Nutter,

You should PM me. I am fairly good at both of these subjects, although my super modern baseball and hockey knowledge is lacking, and I hate NASCAR.

The field for this is now over 50% full. Thanks to everyone who signed up so far!

Per a request, I've also set up a spreadsheet for free agents who want to assemble teams or be assigned to a team or similar. If you're one of those people, you can go here and do that.

I am also available as a freelance player, or as a staffer. I'm good at video games and trashy lit, but I know nothing about sports.
(Edit: I am no longer free, I have been drafted to a team.)

Hey folks! A couple of important updates on this tournament:

- In the interest of ensuring that a proper schedule and other logistics can be handled with appropriate care, the tournament field will be locked at 11:00pm central time on Thursday, May 26th. This means that contrary to initial plans, you will not be able to sign up for the tournament on-site. If you plan on signing up, please do it soon! If you absolutely can't sign up in advance for some reason, let me know and we can probably work something out.

- Regarding scheduling: if the field reaches at least 48 teams, I expect that we will play on a card system in a single, unified field. If the field is too small for cards, we'll split into 'high school' and 'open' divisions and do several rounds of seeded play followed by playoffs. Cards are good, so sign up!

- There's still a need for a few more staffers. If you're going to be in Dallas on Sunday night and want to earn a little extra cash and my eternal love, let me know.

I guess the deadline is coming up, but if anyone still has an open spot on their team (or wants to make a team), let me know. I am pretty terrible at trash, but I know things about video games and recent music, especially "indie" music.
Edit: I've found a team, thanks Tejas.

In the interest of simplifying logistics and our desire to use a card system, the maximum field size for this event is being reduced to 48 teams. As of the writing of this post, there are just 5 spots left, and a little over 72 hours before signups close. If you're on the fence about registering, now is the time to do it!

Unfortunately, Ryan Rosenberg had to drop from our team due to not realizing the tournament was on Sunday.

If anybody is brave enough to join myself, Andrew Wang, and Morgan Venkus for this tournament, we'd love to have you. You know how to reach me.

EDIT: Victor Prieto has joined our party.

Hey, this is happening today!

Check-in is still going to be outside the Monet Ballroom at the mezzanine level. Team check-in will start around 5. If you have a buzzer and can bring it/check in early, that'd be awesome. Staffers should swing by sometime before 5 to help set stuff up. Can't wait to see a bunch of you there!

Congratulations to Colby's Team, who ultimately ran the table to win the HSNCT mirror. Congratulations are also in order for Lexington, who won the high school playoff bracket by defeating St. Mark's School of Texas in the finals. They are now the proud owners of some "great" vinyl trophies. Thanks so much to everyone who came to play, staff, and make for a super fun evening!

I had a blast playing this with some awesome teammates and was really happy to see some quizbowl folks that I hadn't seen in quite a long time. Thanks Erik for putting it all together. I will enjoy my vinyl album of classic Celtic hits.

Despite writing/editing the Ohio HS trash set for 10 years now, this set gave me great perspective on difficulty level and different topics to aim for going forward.

Stats haven't been posted yet, so here they are.

Also - for those who played in this event (or another mirror), I put together a short survey that asks few things about logistics, the questions and so forth. If you have a few minutes, I encourage you to fill out that survey here.
