Re: ACF Nationals - University of Michigan, 04.16-17.2016
The schedule that you should expect is either 13 or 14 rounds on Saturday and the rest on Sunday. What "the rest" means will depend on which bracket you end up in. There will be 4 brackets of 11 teams each, with the top three teams in each bracket moving into the championship bracket, the next two teams going to bracket #2, then the next two to bracket #3, etc. In the playoff brackets, you will play crossover games against opponents you have not played before, meaning that the top bracket will play 9 games and the rest of the brackets will play 6. Any ties that need to be broken both in the transition to brackets and to decide the eventual champion will be broken on packets, meaning that there could potentially be a few more rounds. Once the championship matchups, if any, are set, we'll run the DII and UG finals simultaneously, as applicable, and once those are done we'll do the overall finals, if necessary.AKoutelias wrote:Greetings from Sarasota, FL!

Overall, you should expect to get out between 7 and 8 on Saturday and roughly around 2 pm on Sunday if you stay for any finals. This projection is based on past years' experience.

I should also add that I will be sending a general logistics email sometime in the next few days (probably once I'm done printing packets and making schedules).

I will be landing at DTW at about 9:00 on Friday - since the next bus doesn't leave until 10:30, if any staffers or teams are planning on heading from there to the hotels on the south side of town around that time and want to split an uber, let me know.

Does anyone have updated contact info for Caleb Kendrick of Oklahoma, or anyone else on the Oklahoma team? The logistics email I just sent out bounced from his mailbox, so if you have another contact for anyone involved with the team, please email me, or forward the logistics email to that person.

Here's thru round 10. Email any stats errors to me @ [email protected]. I can only make corrections that were an error of input (i.e. my fault), as the scoresheet is the final arbiter of correctness. (much thanks to Andrew Wang for already catching one such error)

Virginia and Oklahoma are playing a final for the D2 trophy. MIT B takes home 3rd place in D2.

Re: ACF Nationals - University of Michigan, 04.16-17.2016
D2 results: 1. Oklahoma; 2. Virginia; 3. MIT B
The top crossover playoffs have 1.5 or so rounds remaining. Chicago A is currently undefeated; Michigan has 1 loss (having been beaten by Chicago). Stats are up thru round 19 (including D2 Final).

Re: ACF Nationals - University of Michigan, 04.16-17.2016
Congratulations to the University of Michigan (Auroni Gupta, Will Nediger, Siddhant Dogra, and Brian McPeak) for winning the 2016 ACF Nationals title! Further congratulations are due to the second place team from the University of Chicago (Chris Ray, John Lawrence, Max Schindler, and Jason Zhou) who handed Michigan their only loss of the tournament in the playoffs and fought valiantly in the final game. Stanford University (Austin Brownlow, Nikhil Desai, Benji Nguyen, and Stephen Liu) finished third. In the undergraduate division, Maryland A took the title, Berkeley A finished second, and Illinois finished third. Oklahoma took home the DII title by beating Virginia in the DII final, with MIT B taking third place.
Thanks so much to all the great staffers who showed up to help us run the tournament. Special consideration goes out to Cody Voight, Stats Hero, and Roxanne Ilagan, who made coordinating the tournament location easy. And thanks to the editors (Ike Jose, Rob Carson, Ryan Westbrook, and Billy Busse) for all the hard work they've put in over the last few months to bring you only the finest artisanal quizbowl questions crafted lovingly and with care. You are all the best.

There's a very strange error in the stats in which Chicago C and Chicago D have the same roster, but different (and presumably correct) statlines.

Since ties below the finals weren't broken, is it more proper to say that Maryland and Yale A tied for fourth, that Berkeley and MIT A tied for 7th, etc. than to treat the tie as broken based on stats? AFAIK this is how it was done last year and is the typical way ACF Nationals handles ties that aren't played off. No rush on changing the HTML or anything, thoughCody wrote:Final rankings! The round report isn't going to be right in 100% of cases, mostly because the wrong packet was read at one point and I don't want to go through and assign different rounds to all the various situations that caused (and aesthetically, it means more to me to have the rounds reflect when they occurred). Don't use the round report for any analyses! Sing, Goddess, of the pique of Brownstein,
Mild and mostly equitable, which cost Chicago
Unending grief, pitched countless souls
Of heroes into the second bracket,
And left their bodies to reek in Ann Arbor
In hot game rooms, for they had not showered.
Begin with the clash between Ray -
The warlord - and godlike Jordan.
As when a baller, a pike’s height and brawny,
Roars toward the hoop, and a tower of a man rushes
In defense - too late, pitiable man, he arrives,
And flinches to shield his face - and the baller,
Clasping both hands behind his neck in the air,
Batters the rim, and his suspended legs swing
This way and that - so Jordan buzzed, over the
Floundering thumb of Chris, and intoned “Carnot.”
Back and forth they went, the rivals, bronze-haired Ray
And flaxen Brownstein, the Jew, breaker of tossups,
But Brownstein had the best. For one after another,
“Genres,” “Crane,” “Monte Cassino,” all fell to his wit,
And his score column ran black with ink and penstrokes.
His strength fading, Ray of the errant buzzer
Beseeched Brownstein:
“By your life, I beg you,
By your books, your poems - don’t sell
Dave Madden my soul for his history tournaments.
No, you should accept all the dollars and physics tossups you desire,
Hundreds of dollars and full tournaments,
If you return me alive back to McPeak or Schindler.”
And Brownstein snarled:
“Don’t whine to me, you cur,
About my books or poems. I should enslave you myself
For all you did to me - that ‘Love Letter’ tossup you frauded. So no one
Will stop Madden from taking your head, no, not for $250
Dollars, or for five tournaments of physics and chemistry. No,
Neither McPeak nor SteveJon will carry you to your rest, and lament
Your defeat. Instead the Malawi embassy tossups will have your soul.”
So groaning, great in his greatness, Ray barged
Towards Brownstein but fell. And as defeat slid over him,
Brownstein prepared him for life in death.

All stats have been updated to be prettied up and include packet names in the round report. All the reports are available here.
"Final Rankings" indicates order of finish for overall, undergraduate, and D2, as well as indicating the bracket of origin for all teams. "Prelims, including Tiebreakers" contains the full record of the prelims and the tiebreakers, including color-coded rows to show who was tied, in what manner, and who advanced.
"Prelims" and "Combined" exist only as records of individual scoring / for teams's edification (respectively).
