Is there likely to be a Festivus theme-and-trash-packet frenzy again this year? I'll be writing a theme packet sometime this month if time allows and would play it either then or at some other time around then.

On December 22nd, I am going to read Ryan Leaf on Skype to anyone who didn't get to play it at HSNCT. It's an NFL tournament. Message me your Skype name if you'd like to play.

For no particular reason, I am writing (almost done!) with a 20/20 incredibly (I know Byzantium from an academic perspective more than a quizbowl one, so I THINK what I'm writing isn't run of the mill Byzantine History) difficult Byzantine History packet. I plan on reading it at Michigan's quizbowl practice on Thursday night, so I can read it at any point after that.

I wrote another film packet, which is 10 tossups on silent film and 10 assorted tossups. I'll read it tonight at 10:30 Eastern.

Matt Lafer handily won the packet, with Mike Cheyne coming in second.

I'll be reading the trash packet (mostly film with a theme, and some non film questions with a theme) I wrote for our ICT both at ICT itself (the night before, if there's enough people around) and in the IRC the week after. There are at least 50 questions, none of which are good (EDIT: there are 60 tossups--1 is good).

I will have a "mystery theme" packet to play Wednesday night at 9:30 CST in #mystery.

For those who I guess want to play it on their trips to ACF Nationals, I will give it to them, but I think the packet is more enjoyable in a large group and would probably suggest you should play it in the IRC if possible.

I'm 100% done with LIMITLESS INDALECIO, a 20/20 JRPG packet intended to exceed the difficulty of ACFNATIONALS. I intend to use this packet as sort of a difficulty barometer for CULEX, a hypothetical JRPG tournament slated to take place in the next couple of years. I would like to run it at HSNCT first, but if people are interested in acquiring it afterwards, that's fine too.

The distribution for this packet will be as follows:
20 tossups + maybe a couple of additional questions, although I may save a few of those for CULEX.
20 or 21 bonuses

Each set of tossups/bonuses follows a distribution that doesn't deviate too much from the following (except for any common links, which may spread across time periods):
3 NES/GB
5 SNES/Genesis
4 PS1/Saturn
4 PS2/GCN
4 PS3/Wii/360/PS4/Wii U

This is shaping up to be a very challenging packet.

I'm as excited to play this packet as I am to write a CULEX-inspired JRPG tossup for Tricon 6.0.

Inspired by a wonderful old ICT question, I'm about halfway through a car packet of 15-20 questions on "art's vexing questions." I will read it tomorrow night in the IRC for those who are interested in such things and aren't driving to Nationals. Email me tomorrow if you want it for your trip.

Who *IS* this mysterious "individual"? What *WAS* he doing winning this packet? These are just two of this thread's most vexing questions.

I’ll follow the lead of Auroni/Will and read a few dozen of my bad questions this Tuesday at 9:13 p.m. EST. (If you want to play but can’t make it, PM me.) I wrote most of them for practice over the last few weeks. There are approximately 30 music questions, plus handfuls of jazz, ling, CS, astro, and a couple math or history. Unless there are objections, I’ll just read them in the arbitrary order they were written. Whoever wins will receive a prize (next time I see them).

Correct answers to my questions occurred earlier than I predicted (here’s the complete data, spoiler warning):

Code: Select all

earlier than my optimistic estimate ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇
exactly at my optimistic estimate ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇
 between the two estimates ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇
exactly at my pessimistic estimate ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇
later than my pessimistic estimate ▇▇▇▇
Some highlights from the packet (spoiler warning):
  • John “Heisenberg” Lawrence getting the first question on Mendelssohn’s Octet after mentioning he was giving a talk on Mendelssohn’s chamber pieces
  • Eddie going afk on his favorite question because he had to Facebook message Auroni, who was already in the room and got the question instead
  • Auroni guessing Finzi one question before the actual question on Finzi
  • Will going 3/2 on ling, but getting the music question that had a ling leadin and trying to ling fraud the title of Symphonies of Wind Instruments
  • Jokes about piano rolls being sushi and “Batter my Heart” being tempura, the haas-been composer Pavel Haas, answering true and k to those questions

With Jake's blessing, I hereby also tentatively announce INSANITY PRELUDE(/POSTLUDE), a tossup-only packet of ca. 20 hard RPG tossups to be played before (or after) LIMITLESS INDALECIO.
With that being said, we actually do need a field, a time, and some rooms to make this work.

I have a Pacific Northwest themed packet I wrote (and edited to be a bit more palatable for a nationwide audience) and an amusing primary-themed half-packet UW team member Jefferson van Wagenen wrote. May read it Thursday night around maybe 10 PM EDT.

I'll be reading our unused* Nats 2016 packet sometime soon, maybe tonight after Mike's PNW/Jefferson's primary packets are read if there's enough time. These questions are not great, especially the ones we wrote after we knew we weren't going to Nats, some of which were actually just random old Jeremy questions he donated.

I should probably read a packet of Seinfeld trash tossups sometime. I will probably read it Monday night at 9 PM CDT unless something comes up.

Sometime this week, probably Thursday or Friday night, I will read this year's iteration of my annual Before & After packet.

For those who haven't noticed, I have posted the First Annual Sam Brochin Presents™ Packet Patent Pending on quizbowlpackets.com. It is easily found under trash. It's been described as "The best packet of all time" and "The worst packet of all time". Sequels and spinoffs exist. Go check it out!
