Boilermaker Buzzathon At Purdue (1-14-17) West Lafayette, IN

Post by stanjast »

The Purdue University Quiz Bowl Team is proud to announce the inaugural Boilermaker Buzzathon High School Tournament will be held on Saturday, January 14th, on Purdue's West Lafayette, Indiana campus. This will be an NAQT-style tournament and will run on NAQT's INVITATIONAL SERIES 161A (IS-161A) question set.

Purdue is easily accessible via Interstate 65 (and is just north of I-74), making it convenient to teams from Indiana, the Chicagoland area and Central Illinois.

Schools may bring as many teams as they like. Top finishers will qualify for the 2017 NAQT High School National Championship Tournament or, if you're a small school, the 2017 NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament.

These are the fee particulars:
BASE FEE: $70 per team

DISCOUNTS:
-$5 per working buzzer system (limit 2 per team)
-$10 per experienced staffer
-$30 if the team travels more than 125 miles (one-way) to Purdue

Minimum fee: $30 per team

Please register your team before Monday, January 9th by e-mailing me at stan.jastrzebski [at] gmail [dot] com or by filling out our online registration form.

One quick note: in order to make this tournament as accessible as possible to high school teams in the Midwest (and to avoid a set many Illinois schools may play during the course of the year), we've changed our question set to NAQT IS-161A. We hope you'll join us in January!

Hi everyone --

We're very much looking forward to hosting our high school tournament here at Purdue on January 14th. Here's a quick field update, with a little more than a month to go before the registration deadline (January 9th):

William Henry Harrison High School (4-5 teams)
Culver Academies (3 teams)
Noblesville High School (1 team)
Zionsville High School (2 teams)
Saint Joseph High School (1+ teams)
North Central High School (1 team)

There's still plenty of space for you and your teams, too -- whether you're from Indiana, Illinois, or Trinidad and Tobago (we have a travel discount!). Hope to see you on campus in a few weeks.

Our latest field count puts us at 12-13 teams for our January 14th event. We've got a 20-team cap due to the number of rooms available, but that means there's still space for 7-8 teams. Anyone in Central Illinois who isn't playing in this weekend's tournament up at New Trier (as an aside: egads, what an amazing field size!) want to come join us?

Here's the updated field, with exactly two weeks to go before registration closes (Monday, Jan. 9 is the deadline, please):

William Henry Harrison High School (4-5 teams)
Culver Academies (3 teams)
Noblesville High School (2 teams)
Zionsville High School (2 teams)
Saint Joseph High School (1+ teams)
North Central High School (1 team)

We're really looking forward to the tournament. We're in the process of ordering some nice trophies for the top scorers and winning team and we're committed to giving everyone in the field a first-class experience.

There are at least 6-7 spots left before we hit our 20-team cap, so your team can still participate!

Please register at this website: https://goo.gl/forms/tqV99DQ0cTWLCRHI3 or send me an e-mail (stan.jastrzebski [AT] gmail.com).

Happy holidays to all,

(NOTE: Edited 8:41 am on 1/6/17 to reflect an addition to the field)

We've ordered the awards, the questions are on their way from NAQT and our field is filling up -- but there's still time to get your team registered for the inaugural Boilermaker Buzzathon. Here's an updated field as of this afternoon:

William Henry Harrison High School (4 teams)
Culver Academies (3 teams)
Noblesville High School (2 teams)
Zionsville High School (2 teams)
Saint Joseph High School (2 teams)
North Central High School (1 team)
Marion High School (1 team)

POSSIBLES:
Carmel High School

Right now we have 15 teams officially registered, which means we have FIVE MORE SPOTS left. They're going on a first come, first served basis, so don't delay.

Please register at this website: https://goo.gl/forms/tqV99DQ0cTWLCRHI3 or send me an e-mail (stan.jastrzebski [AT] gmail.com).

Another field update, now that the Monday registration deadline has come and gone:

William Henry Harrison High School (4 teams)
Culver Academies (3 teams)
Noblesville High School (2 teams)
Zionsville High School (2 teams)
Saint Joseph High School (2 teams)
North Central High School (1 team)

14 teams right now, which is a number we're very excited about. I received the questions yesterday from NAQT and this should be a lot of fun!

Mr. Jastrzebski, Thank you for a very well run tournament! Our team thoroughly enjoyed it. Other than a bit of confusion in our room at the beginning, everything went great: a full 10 rounds, quick and accurate stats, finished at a reasonable time, nice prizes, good readers, etc. Our team will definitely be looking forward to future tournaments at Purdue; any chance another one will be run later in the spring??

We were happy to do it and we couldn't have without buy-in from all the teams that came. So the thanks really go to the players, like yourself, and the coaches.

No plans at the moment for a spring event, but we're definitely thinking of making the Buzzathon a yearly occurrence.
