Terrapin XXIX Announcement
Terrapin XXIX Announcement
I’m excited to announce Terrapin XXIX, a regular-difficulty tournament to be played in November 2016. This set will be written by members of the University of Maryland quizbowl team.
Eligibility
Anyone who is eligible under ACF rules, in addition to high schoolers, can play this tournament with other students from their affiliated institution.
Difficulty and Editing
This tournament will be “regular difficulty” in the tradition of the past two years’ ACF Regionals, with a particular focus on keeping the tossup answerlines accessible (expect at least 50% of tossup giveaways to be of standard ACF Fall difficulty), the middle parts reasonable, and the easy parts truly gettable for most of the field.
I, Jordan Brownstein, will serve as the head editor of the set, and will also subject-edit all categories but science, which will be edited by Billy Busse. Since many of the questions are being written by up-and-coming collegiate writers, the set will be edited with a PADAWAN-like focus on providing detailed feedback early and often, with the intent of allowing the writers themselves to fine-tune their own questions. Since 30% of the set has already been written, I anticipate that we will have time to put the questions through numerous iterations of this feedback-revision loop.
Distribution
The set will consist of 15 power-marked packets, and will be distributed as follows:
4/4 Literature (1/1 American, 1/1 British, 1/1 European, 1/1 World & Other)
4/4 History (1/1 American, 2/2 European, 1/1 World)
4/4 Science (1/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Physics, 1/1 Other)
3/3 Fine Arts (1/1 Painting, 1/1 Music, 1/1 Other Arts)
1/1 Religion
1/1 Mythology
1/1 Philosophy
1/1 Social Science
1/1 (a third each of Current Events/Geography/Other Academic)
Mirrors
The mirror fee will be $40 per team, including house teams. Please contact Sarang Yeola at saryeola (at) gmail (dot) com if you are interested in bringing this amazing set to your area! We would like mirrors to occur on the weekends of November 12 and November 19 in at least the following regions:
Mid-Atlantic: UMD, 11/19
Northeast: MIT, 11/12
Great Lakes: Ohio State, 12/3
Pacific Northwest: University of Washington, 1/7
South:
Southeast: Georgia Tech, 11/13
Central: Missouri, 11/12
Southwest:

Southern California: UCLA, 11/19
Canada: McMaster, 11/26

Re: Terrapin XXIX Announcement
UMD is considering hosting an open Skype mirror of Terrapin XXIX on Saturday, January 7, 2017.
We'd like to gauge interest in this — please email " quizbowl [at] ophir [dot] li " by December 27, 2016 if you are interested in this tournament and whether you can or cannot make it on that day.

We're merging our in-person mirror into this so I believe it's happening.Arch Stanton wrote:Any update as to whether or not this is happening?crash bandicoot wrote:UMD is considering hosting an open Skype mirror of Terrapin XXIX on Saturday, January 7, 2017.

Re: Terrapin XXIX Announcement
Is this still planned to happen on 1/7? I don't think Auburn can make it on that day, but if it were on another Saturday we probably could.

Re: Terrapin XXIX Announcement
At the risk of belaboring a point, it would be nice if information about the Skype mirror was more forthcoming. As it currently stands, an in person mirror of Terrapin was cancelled partially in order to aid a Skype mirror that may or may not be occurring (in under 48 hours no less!). Currently, there is no publicly available field or free agency list for the Skype mirror, no publicly available logistical information, and the ostensible point of contact is not returning emails or responding to inquiries on the forums. I apologize if this post sounds overly harsh, but I have already had to alter my weekend plans once for this tournament, so it would be nice to know what is going on.

Given that the Louisiana mirror has been cancelled and no replacement has been publicly announced, could this set be posted?

Re: Terrapin XXIX Announcement
We are working on it. Unfortunately, the entry for Terrapin on the website is currently owned by a non-Maryland person. We need that person to transfer ownership of the entry to me first before we can post the packets. I've already emailed the person, and I'm currently waiting for a response. (Alternatively, perhaps an admin could transfer ownership?)Tornrak wrote:Given that the Louisiana mirror has been cancelled and no replacement has been publicly announced, could this set be posted?
