Chicago Open 2017 - July 22nd
Chicago Open 2017 - July 22nd
This is the official announcement for Chicago Open 2017, which will be held at the University of Chicago at some later date. The main tournament will be held on Saturday, July 22nd, with auxiliary events on Sunday, July 23rd.
The tournament will be edited by a team comprised of science speicalist Billy Busse, musty historian Ryan Westbrook, music specialist Jason Thompson, and myself as the head editor.
Chicago Open is a packet-submission tournament; all teams must submit a packet to play or pay the usurious fee of $600. Our target difficulty is similar to recent incarnations. We encourage teams to submit quality and adventurous questions: Chicago Open is the ground to ask about difficult and interesting topics, but it is not the place to fill your packets with 13-line tossups and/or insanely hard topics that punish the field. A further note about tossup length: we are instituting a hard cap of 8 lines on edited tossups. Teams are welcome to submit longer tossups.
DISTRIBUTION - Chicago Open this year will follow a very special distribution! Please read below: The submitted number of questions will total to 24/20.
5/4 Literature
1/1 American Literature
1/1 British Literature
1/1 European Literature
1/1 World Literature
1 tossup on Miscellaneous Literature - Genre stuff, criticism, more of American, British, European, (but not World) Literatures.
5/4 History
1/1 American History
1/1 World History
3/2 European, Canadian, and Australian history. Feel free to replace one of the five questions with historiography, the academic study of history, etc.
5/4 Science
1/1 Biology
1/1 Chemistry
1/1 Physics
1/1 Other science - Computer Science, Math, Astronomy, Earth Science - do not write on the same two categories for this.
1 Any Science - can be more of the Big 3, or one of the Other Science categories you did not write on, or other science questions that don't neatly fit into the distribution (say engineering!)
2/2 RMP
1/0 or 0/1 Mythology
1/0 or 0/1 Religion
1/1 Philosophy
Please see below as to where the 1/1 freed space went.
3/3 Arts
1/1 Painting and Sculpture
1/1 Classical Music and Opera
0/1 or 1/0 Other Visual Arts
0/1 or 1/0 Other Auditory Arts
1/1 Social Science - psychology, law, sociology, anthropology, linguistics, etc. One question at most can focus on "great theorists." Try to write applied questions in these topics.
3/2 Other
1/0 - Geography or Current Events
1/1 Other Academic OR Mythology / Religion: You may use this space to write the 1/1 religion and mythology that got cut out of the RMP section. I want to put this here since I think relaxing the requirements that mythology or religion be "pure" might lead to some interesting questions. Given the recent discussion about the exhaustion of the myth canon, perhaps the best way to keep this category fresh is to instead draw on a variety of academic and cultural sources (sparingly or exuberantly). As an example of this, I once wrote a tossup on Ixion that clued Rued Langgaard's symphonies, and Matt Jackson wrote the Jung mythography TU last year. The former wasn't a particularly great clue, but the point is writers should think outside the normal framework to write their second myth and religion questions if they so desire. Writing more other academic instead of either religion or mythology is OK as well. (That is, it is OKAY to write 0/0, 1/1, 0/1, or 1/0 R and M in this category.)
1/1 Other Academic part 2: One of these questions can be on something "trashy" that has cultural or academic merit. Feel free to leave a footnote to make your argument if you feel the question's merit may be mystifying to editors. High culture submissions such as food go here. Or you can just write on more academic topics that QB doesn't normally cover.
Follow the ACF Guidelines about subdistributions if they are not noted here.
FEES - At the suggestion of last year's editors, we are increasing the base fee. This year, we will be instituting two new innovations: an incentive to produce quality submissions and a simplified packet schedule system.
BASE FEE: $200
QUALITY SUBMISSION DISCOUNTS:
- Great Submission: -$100
- Good Submission -$60
- Usable Submission -$20
Judgments on which packets get what discounts will be based solely on the discretion of the editors.
To talk about this for a bit: this fee structure is not meant to punish any teams, just incentivize quality submissions. The editors will evaluate packets on a holistic basis: this includes taking into account the "strength of the team's previous writing". An elite team crapping out a packet will not necessarily get the great "submission" discount. On the other hand, a team who surprises us with several inspired ideas and / or a handful of solid questions might very well get the great submission discount. In any case, I expect that every team will get at least the Usable Submission discount if they follow the distribution and make a good-faith attempt with every question. I have no problem theoretically giving every team the Great Submission discount; this portion of the fees is meant to be purely "carrot" and no "stick."
SUBMISSION DEADLINES:
Penalty schedule:
Before:
May 21st: $0
June 4th: +$40
June 11th: +$80
June 18th: +$120
After June 18th: +$20 additional per day
After June 25th: Dropped from the tournament automatically or pay the editors $600 to play.
All packet submission windows close at 12 AM Pacific Time. All teams will be given an automatic one day extension at the cost of a +$20 penalty if they need it. After that, you're automatically in the bracket for the next deadline. (So if you submit on June 5th, it'll be plus +$80) This portion of the schedule is meant to be entirely "stick" and no "carrot." This deadline is based on the July 22nd tournament date, it may get adjusted accordingly!
LOGISTICS and PAYMENT - to be handled later, possibly by someone else.

If we replace one of the European/Canadian/Aus/N.Z. history questions with a historiography question, does it also have to be on one of those regions? Or can it be on any?

Is there anything else planned?

In seriousness, I would assume there's room for one more tossup only event. Historically, one full tournament + side event or three(ish) side events have been able to appear on Sunday.

Also, I'd like the Sunday schedule/order of events settled as soon as possible as I'm (and probably others) would like to plan when they're leaving on Sunday.

Sure, this isn't a complaint in that I WANT TO PLAY ALL THE EVENTS BUT I CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW, but rather, if I know that the events I really want to play come first, I'm okay leaving Sunday, etc. I'm not trying to mandate anyone rework the schedule around me; I just want to know for planning purposes.

EDIT: I have been told through shady back channels to send it to Ike. Can you confirm your email is still the one that begins "sep..." and ends "...mail.com?"

As with last year, we might bring a couple of team staffers to CO. If we do, is there any way we could get a discount?

Perhaps the first wave of packet submissions might clarify this, but getting more of a sense of logistics/field/planning might be nice as we are around two months away.

We've started discussions about bringing staffers to CO, and as of now, we might be able to bring up to 3 +/- 1 staffers.Charbroil wrote:As with last year, we might bring a couple of team staffers to CO. If we do, is there any way we could get a discount?
Along those lines, it would be nice to know if a discount might be available for those staffers. We will probably bring them regardless of discounts, but it would be nice to get some modest compensation for the costs of transporting and lodging them.

A note on logistics:
There are currently 11 registered teams. The field cap is set at 18. If there is more interest and the logistical power to do so, I will expand the field to 20 teams.
The only way to be considered registered is to have your packet in or declare your intent to pay the "no packet fee." Once June 25th rolls around, I will send out invoices to teams - which will include the quality discount, the late penalty, etc. Please email me separately with your intent to bring buzzers and staffers so I can add the relevant discounts to your invoice.
As a reminder, there will be no entry fee collection at the tournament itself. Your team will either be paying by Venmo beforehand (perhaps by proxy), or mailing me by snail mail. All payment must be received one week prior to the tournament itself.* Part of the goal here is to get games started as soon as buzzers are set up.
*I will refund players who are no-shows due to "acts of God."

Hey guys,
I have 17 packets now. The next team that submits a packet will be the 18th team, and all subsequent teams will go on a waitlist. I will expand the field to 20 teams if there is interest - staffing does not appear to be an issue.
Also, if you have an intent to register, but haven't let me know, it would be best to do so. I want to keep on touch with folks so that there are no surprises - no one likes it when they write 12/12 only to find out that they are on a waitlist.

With 18 packets in, the field is now closed.
We do have the logistics to support going to 20 teams, but there needs to be enough interest. If you would like to play Chicago Open at this point, you can register as a standby / waitlist team, and you will be added into the tournament if another team joins and no one drops. If you can't make it out to the tournament and you are already registered, let me know ASAP.

I have now sent out invoices to every team. I am going to give teams until June 30th - Friday, to let me know that they'll be bringing buzzers. After that, I will begin the payment collection phase.
If you have not emailed about the number of buzzers you are bringing, please do so.

Hey folks,
I have sent every team an email containing an invoice to each team. Please pay by Venmo or Paypal. I will not be collecting payment at the tournament itself. You are expected to have paid me Sunday, July 16th.
Unless you have made arrangements otherwise, please pay as a team. I will not be collecting payment that just covers individuals. Email me if you have any questions.
Edit: Actually, I want to amend this statement so that there is no misunderstanding. If you have not paid by Sunday, July 16th, I will drop you from the tournament. The only exception to this rule is if you arrange a payment scheme with me beforehand. I'm not trying to be difficult here, I just want teams to be proactive about payment.

Re: Chicago Open 2017 - July 22nd
The tournament will take place in Cobb Hall. With 18 teams, we will be doing a similar schedule to last year: 2 brackets of 9, followed by a top bracket comprised of the top 5 teams from each bracket - there will then be 5 crossover games for the top bracket and 4 crossover games for the bottom bracket.
More detailed logistical information will be out within the next week.
Edit: Also, if your name is bolded above, it means I have received payment.

Hey friends,
A lot of you have failed to even contact me about payment after you have been invoiced, and I want to politely remind teams that payment is due this upcoming Sunday. Please get in touch with me / respond to the initial email I sent you.

Logistics Information:
The tournament will be held in Cobb Hall. Registration will open at 8:15am, and Round 1 will begin at 8:30am. The reason for this abbreviated registration is you have all paid, there is no reason to dilly-dally. You will be getting a copy of the prelim schedule and the games will begin.
The format is as follows: 2 brackets of 9. Top 5 from each bracket play 5 more crossover games in playoffs, bottom 4 teams in each bracket play crossover games, and are free to scrimmage on the last packet of playoffs. There is one team packet* reserved for the play-in to the finals if need be.
*Borglum, Hughes, et al. this is your packet, so don't spill the beans on it after the prelims are done!

Re: Chicago Open 2017 - July 22nd
For all CO players arriving in the early afternoon:
The Chicago team will host an open practice in Regenstein Library 503 between 3 and 5 pm, Friday July 21.
Our apologies for the late notice and the short practice, but some factors came up out of our control and we could not use the room we originally planned for.
If there is interest in continuing after 5, we will move to the linguistics department conference room, Rosenwald 208.
We hope to see you there.
ETA: If you do not have a point of contact with the Chicago team and plan to attend the practice and need to be signed in, please send me a PM as soon as possible and I will give you a number to text.

When there's enough information, would you be able to announce how long practice will be going on for? I may attend if it continues for a while after 5.

We're still going, in Rosenwald. Enter via the wheelchair entrance (walk to the front of Rosenwald then go left)

Our CO team has suffered at least one, possibly more, casualties to the lottery that is airline travel, so if anyone is in the Chicagoland area and wants to join my team, show up tomorrow morning.

Hey, this is an official tournament announcement from the editors. We understand that there are travel issues caused by the current thunderstorm. The weather is expected to clear up by 2 am, so if you can reschedule your flight into Chicago for the morning and still arrive, that would be great. Furthermore, if you arrive late due to an air travel delay, we will accommodate a missed first round by giving the opportunity to play the game over lunchtime.

For DC-area people, one option still selling tickets that could get people there in time to play (most of) the main event is United flight 635 out of BWI leaving at 7:02 AM and arriving at 8:04 AM at O'Hare. Tickets are currently $160.20 (one way).

Nobody has officially posted this, but the team of Auroni Gupta, Matt Bollinger, Will Nediger, and Will Alston won this tournament.
The tournament was slightly on the hard side, sometimes oppressively so. I perhaps might be exaggerating, though: as La Rochefoucauld said, "if we had no faults of our own, we would not take so much pleasure in noticing those of others."

The combined stats are kind of confusing, so using only a team's playoff record, here's the final standings of the upper bracket:
1st: Bollinger/Gupta/Nediger/Alston: 9-0
T2: Magin/Reed/Goldman/Friend: 7-2
T2: Brownstein/Ray/Lawrence/Schindler: 7-2
4th: Carson/Hart/Raje/Silverman: 6-3
5th: Vinokurov/Droge/Wang/Zhou: 5-4
6th: Golfinos/Lifshitz/Zhang/Humphrey: 4-5
T7: Kothari/Cheyne/Peterson: 2-7
T7: Sorice/Etzkorn/Fine/Shimizu: 2-7
T7: Myers/Kern/Mehigan/McPeak: 2-7
10th: Minarik/Lasker/Cheng/Boyd: 1-8
1st: Bollinger/Gupta/Nediger/Alston: 9-0

Hey, so I've heard that there's some interest in reading the remainder of the packets on some online form - I'm thinking about doing that this Saturday evening. Does that work for people?
