(99 Problems by Jay-Z vs. Helicopter by Bloc Party)
Abstain

Hips Don't Lie by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean vs. One Armed Scissor by At the Drive-In

No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age vs. Supermassive Black Hole by Muse
I'm sad about this matchup because both are great songs, and also bands I listen to far more than most of the other artists in these brackets.

Paper Planes by M.I.A. vs. Not Ready to Make Nice by Dixie Chicks

Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue

Untitled (How Does It Feel?) by D'Angelo vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend

I Will Possess Your Heart by Death Cab for Cutie vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens
Another two good songs, but Sufjan is amazingly good on basically everything on Illinois.

Last Nite by The Strokes vs. Slow Jamz by Twist featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx
ANOTHER two really great songs. Never thought I'd have to vote against The Strokes here, but Slow Jamz is too good of a song. Still sad I'm voting against The Strokes.

M.I.A. still bangs.

Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue

Untitled (How Does It Feel?) by D'Angelo vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend

I Will Posses Your Heart by Death Cab for Cutie vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens

Last Nite by The Strokes vs. Slow Jamz by Twista featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx
This was one incredibly difficult matchup among a bunch that seemed pretty clear to me. If this had been the version of Slow Jamz with more of Kanye's verses, I would've voted differently, but as it stands I have to pick Last Nite, which is an excellent song that I think deserves to move beyond this round of the bracket.

Michigan > Illinois is my Sufjan hot take. Both great though. Also RIP to the losers of the last two matches cause those are pretty much the best four songs this round.

Never loved MIA, but this song was such a big part of my childhood it grew on me.

Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue
Speaking of songs that were big in my childhood, this one feels like a juggernaut. Sorry to Kylie, a strong song, but in the wrong spot in the bracket to move very far.

Untitled (How Does It Feel?) by D'Angelo vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend

I Will Posses Your Heart by Death Cab for Cutie vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens
The instrumental on the first song is strong, but Chicago stands apart as just an altogether better song.

Last Nite by The Strokes
vs. Slow Jamz by Twista featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx
Neither feels particularly original, but The Strokes are strong and consistent, and this feels like B- Kanye and a waste of Jamie Foxx's talent, even though Twista is really good.

Toughest decision of these eight.

Untitled (How Does It Feel?) by D'Angelo vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend
I think I ruined this one for myself by listening to A-Punk nonstop years ago, to the point where it doesn't do anything for me anymore.

I Will Possess Your Heart by Death Cab for Cutie vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens
Second-toughest decision here.

I neglected to mention this earlier, but the greatest omission in this bracket is "Everytime We Touch", the best thing that Germany has ever produced other than Carsten Gehring. Put it on in a room full of people and watch how excited everyone gets every time. It's better than almost every song that did make the cut.

99 Problems by Jay-Z vs. Helicopter by Bloc Party

I'm not a big Jay-Z fan and I don't like Rick Rubin really at all, and so after all these years it's still remarkable how well "99 Problems" works.

Hips Don't Lie by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean vs. One Armed Scissor by At the Drive-In

I'm not particularly into either of these songs; as far as Shakira's English-language work goes, "Wherever, Whenever" is a better song than "Hips Don't Lie".

No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age vs. Supermassive Black Hole by Muse

Neither of these bands are ones I'd seek out, although the Muse song that sounds like "Call Me" by Blondie and has been in heavy rotation on ESPN for years is inherently pretty good since it sounds like "Call Me".

Paper Planes by M.I.A. vs. Not Ready to Make Nice by Dixie Chicks

I would vote for "Paper Planes" over any other song on this bracket because it's the best single of the decade. It's catchy and politically meaningful without sounding stilted or preachy, and a decade later it doesn't feel like it's aged at all.

Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue

"Now it's like Murder, She Wrote / Once I get you out them clothes"

Untitled (How Does It Feel?) by D'Angelo vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend

I like Vampire Weekend a lot, but I don't really like this song.

I Will Posses Your Heart by Death Cab for Cutie vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens

These are both very good songs, but "I Will Possess Your Heart" is weirder and I like Ben Gibbard's voice better than that of Sufjan Stevens, and that makes the difference.

Last Nite by The Strokes vs. Slow Jamz by Twist featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx

99 Problems by Jay-Z vs. Helicopter by Bloc Party

I never got super into Jay-Z like I did Kanye, but "99 Problems" is pretty great, especially the iconic second verse.

Hips Don't Lie by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean vs. One Armed Scissor by At the Drive-In

I like At the Drive-In well enough, but I think I prefer those guys in The Mars Volta instead. "Hips Don't Lie" is a classic that no amount of Wyclef Jean mumbling through his lines can ruin for me.

No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age vs. Supermassive Black Hole by Muse

Two alt-rock songs I hold in high regard, but I need to give the edge to QotSA here for making one of my favorite driving songs. Dave Grohl also absolutely kills it on "No One Knows", which is probably my favorite drum track of his. "Supermassive Black Hole" is very catchy, but Muse can do better than just cosplaying Prince.

Paper Planes by M.I.A. vs. Not Ready to Make Nice by Dixie Chicks

"Paper Planes" is fine, but I was never super big on the song like most folks- I do love the gunshots/cash register clips in the chorus though and would've considered voting for "Bad Girls." You know how I feel about the Dixie Chicks song.

Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue

This is really close for me! Funny story: my karaoke bar of choice has "Ignition", but not the remix. I was very disappointed to learn this!

Untitled (How Does It Feel?) by D'Angelo vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend

I like both of these artists a lot, but I also think both have several better songs. I'll give D'Angelo the nod because there aren't many chances to vote for a neo-soul song in this bracket.

I Will Posses Your Heart by Death Cab for Cutie vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens

I've always felt more "obligated" to like Sufjan than I actually do, but I do think Illinois is a nice album. "I Will Possess Your Heart" I think works better in theory than practice- I like the concept of the slow buildup but it just kinda stagnates for me, and the lyrics are... extremely creepy.

Last Nite by The Strokes vs. Slow Jamz by Twista featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx

I like "Slow Jamz", but I can't believe people are voting for it over "Last Nite", one of the best rock songs of the decade from one of the best albums of the decade.

They play that song all the time at ND games, it's great and the whole stadium goes beserk.

Hips Don't Lie
Supermassive Black Hole (although Uprising is so much better)
Paper Planes

Hips Don't Lie by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean vs. One Armed Scissor by At the Drive-In

No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age vs. Supermassive Black Hole by Muse.

Paper Planes by M.I.A. vs. Not Ready to Make Nice by Dixie Chicks. I'm just gonna say it: the chorus of Paper Planes is annoying and I don't like it.

Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly vs. Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue. Don't really understand the appeal of Ignition. Feels like the musical version of a bad joke that everyone only laughs at out of politeness.

Untitled (How Does It Feel?) by D'Angelo vs. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend.

I Will Posses Your Heart by Death Cab for Cutie vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens.

Last Nite by The Strokes vs. Slow Jamz by Twist featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx. Is This It is easily one of my top five albums of all time, and I think I would vote for any song from it here.

Heeeeeeyyyyy Yaaaaaaaaaaa—I’m upset it had to knock out Blind though

Time to Pretend

One More Time—Survivor beats both

Bad Romance

[EDIT--vote change]
Stuck Between Stations

The Seed 2.0

Lose Yourself—this should be at least a 2 seed

The Fear—this was the hardest decision of the entire bracket for me: a monolith enhanced by its artist’s death and a synth single which never really made it across the pond. They're comprised of two completely different sounds, but Allen’s depth won me over. I’m genuinely upset I hadn’t even heard of this song before.

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Blind by Hercules and Love Affair
I'm not really a fan of either, but I'll give the nod to "Hey Ya!" since it brings back good memories of my senior year of high school.

Time to Pretend by MGMT
vs. The Funeral by Band of Horses

One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Independent Women Part 1 by Destiny's Child

Bad Romance by Lady Gaga vs. Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips
Most of Lady Gaga's catalog is bubblegum pop, but she is clearly talented and this is one of the few songs of hers that I really like. I probably would have picked "Poker Face" or "Alejandro" instead, but "Bad Romance" is still a great choice.

Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Stuck Between Stations by The Hold Steady

The Seed (2.0) by The Roots featuring Cody Chestnutt
vs. Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine
As much as I *should* like Florence + the Machine I've just never been able to dig them.

All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem vs. Lose Yourself by Eminem
This is by far the toughest choice of this round. I listened to The Marshall Mathers LP nonstop back when I was 14 and it first came out, but it didn't take me long to grow out of that phase and I've really come to dislike Eminem. However, "Lose Yourself" is still an undeniably great track that holds up very well. Ultimately I'm going to reward the artist whom I like better overall, because I have no better criteria to use to break the tie between two great songs.

Hey Ya! by Outkast
I mean... yeah.

The Funeral by Band of Horses
This song is a bit overlong, but I don't much like Time to Pretend.

One More Time by Daft Punk

Bad Romance by Lady Gaga
Of course.

Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand

Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine

All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem
This is one of the easier choices this round, since Eminem has never been good and AMF is moderately underseeded.

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Blind by Hercules and Love Affair - duh

Time to Pretend by MGMT vs. The Funeral by Band of Horses - Time to Pretend is the best of MGMT's big singles.

One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Independent Women Part 1 by Destiny's Child - sure

Bad Romance by Lady Gaga vs. Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips - duh, for several reasons

Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Stuck Between Stations by The Hold Steady - hard to say whether I specifically like Stuck Between Stations more than Take Me Out, but I love the Hold Steady and it's likely to get steamrolled anyway, so it gets my vote.

The Seed (2.0) by The Roots featuring Cody Chestnutt vs. Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine - whatever. Could've gone either way here really; I don't particularly care for Cody Chestnutt's sections of the Roots song so F+tM gets the vote.

All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem vs. Lose Yourself by Eminem - continuing to conclude that LCD Soundsystem may just be Not For Me--I'm hard pressed to point out anything I specifically dislike here, but there's also nothing really I explicitly do like, and I feel like a seven-plus-minute-long song with no choruses should be doing something interesting! I may be biased here in having read the song description on Genius, but it really does sound like a fun band doing something boring (though, to be fair, the Genius writer(s) seem to think "The Killers in Ibiza" and "New Order doing Kraut-funk" are compliments, rather than warning labels).

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Blind by Hercules and Love Affair

"Blind" has perhaps been my favorite song that I've discovered through this bracket so far, but it's not standing up to "Hey Ya!", which is one of the very few songs that I don't think anybody dislikes.

Time to Pretend by MGMT vs. The Funeral by Band of Horses

The Band of Horses song was very forgettable. I much prefer "Electric Feel", but I still like "Time To Pretend", especially the stupid doodly riff that's impossible to forget.

One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Independent Women Part 1 by Destiny's Child

Daft Punk are probably one of my top 2 or 3 musical groups, even if I prefer "Digital Love". "Independent Women" is fine, I really like the opening verse in particular, but it doesn't stand out too much in 2017/18 now that we have a million other Girl Power Songs. The music video is hilariously dated and worth a watch even if you know the song by heart.

Bad Romance by Lady Gaga vs. Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips

"Bad Romance" may be the best pure pop song of the decade. Lady Gaga is a genius.

Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Stuck Between Stations by The Hold Steady

"Take Me Out" is another one of my favorites of the decade- I'm gonna have some tough choices to make coming up! In particular, the intro -> segue into the first chorus is one of my favorite musical moments in the whole bracket.

The Seed (2.0) by The Roots featuring Cody Chestnutt vs. Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine

I had not heard "The Seed" before this, but I like its blend of rock, rap, and soul quite a bit! But I'll have to give the edge to Flo here: "Dog Days" has such a powerhouse chorus and felt so fresh when it was new.

All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem vs. Lose Yourself by Eminem

Both of these songs... don't really do a lot for me musically. But one of them tells a wonderfully sad story and the other is a rather overdone rags-to-riches tale. I don't really care that it actually happened, I just don't find it particularly inspiring is all. "Stan" would've been a better choice.

Rehab by Amy Winehouse vs. The Fear by Lily Allen

I don't have much to say about "Rehab" other than it's really good and hits all the right retro buttons for me.

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Blind by Hercules and Love Affair

Time to Pretend by MGMT vs. The Funeral by Band of Horses
"Kids" has more of an emotional pull for me, but "Time to Pretend" is the best of MGMT's three excellent singles from Oracular Spectacular.

One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Independent Women Part 1 by Destiny's Child
"One More Time" is a lot more annoying when listening to the whole song rather than a 10-second sample, and "Independent Women" is such a good groove.

Bad Romance by Lady Gaga vs. Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips

Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Stuck Between Stations by The Hold Steady
I'm going to vote for "Take Me Out" next round (barring a crazy upset), but the Hold Steady are my favorite band of the 2000s and I would pick "Stuck Between Stations" over anything else in the bracket. If you like "Stuck Between Stations," check out the rest of Boys and Girls in America, and listen to the Hold Steady's second album, Separation Sunday, all the way through.

The Seed (2.0) by The Roots featuring Cody Chestnutt vs. Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine
"The Seed (2.0)" is good but nowhere near the Roots' best work, although in fairness that doesn't come in the 2000s. On the other side of the matchup, Florence has one of the really captivating and unique voices of the 2000s. A surprisingly easy choice of an artist whose overall work I like less.

This is obvious, if only because Outkast is one of my favorite acts of all time.

Time to Pretend by MGMT vs. The Funeral by Band of Horses

One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Independent Women Part 1 by Destiny's Child
This is one of the first Daft Punk songs I ever heard, and it's amazing. It's not Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger or Digital Love, but it's still really good.

Bad Romance by Lady Gaga vs. Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips

Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Stuck Between Stations by The Hold Steady
Fun fact: Franz Ferdinand is apparently one of Todd in the Shadows' favorite bands.

In case you haven't seen it, this cover of Dog Days Are Over is (in my opinion, obviously) better than the original.

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Blind by Hercules and Love Affair

When I lived in Atlanta, I lived in an upscale recent development, in the sort of neighborhood where there were always white people out and about walking their dogs. My apartment wasn't terribly far from campus (when I departed on my walk to school in the morning and put on Emotion: Side B, a 27-minute record, I always made it to the industrial engineering building right before the last song, "Roses", came on), but the neighborhood in between had a reputation for not being very nice, to the extent that at orientation we were told not to walk there after dark, lest we get mugged. If memory serves, when the current governor of Georgia was advocating for guns on college campuses, he made the claim that malefactors were just waiting on the outer edges of campus, on the other side of 10th Street, in order to prey on woefully unarmed students as soon as they stepped off school grounds.

Naturally, I ignored those warnings. Plenty of nights I stayed on campus until past 10 PM whether I had anything to do or not, because all my friends were there and there wasn't anything interesting waiting for me at home. Whenever I did that, it would mean that the campus buses had stopped running so I couldn't get home that way, and I certainly wasn't going to spend money to call a car to take me home when I could get home for free with my own two legs. Anyway, I didn't really believe what they said about the neighborhood, because I heard similar things about the socioeconomically diverse neighborhood where I lived in College Park, and choosing to live there turned out to be the only good decision I made in my four years at Maryland.

One evening when I was walking back from my apartment to campus for an intramural basketball game, I was passing by the Papa John's on 10th Street when a car pulled up next to me and stopped at the red light. That car was blasting "Roses" by Outkast. At that moment, I felt like living in Atlanta was exactly what I had imagined it might be like.

It feels like everyone has a go-to Outkast song that they cite as their favorite to show that they have real musical taste, unlike those proles who just like "Hey Ya", and I guess for me "Roses" is that song; it's an André 3000 joint, but it still has Big Boi on it, so it counts. It's true that "Hey Ya" isn't really an Outkast song but rather an André 3000 song, but who cares? It can stand up with anything Outkast did as a duo, or really with anything at all that was released in the 2000s.

Time to Pretend by MGMT vs. The Funeral by Band of Horses

Hey, this is an MGMT song that isn't one of the two MGMT songs that I can name. I vaguely remember that some year (my freshman year, maybe), the University of Maryland booked MGMT for its annual spring concert. My friends always complained that Maryland's headliners were worse than the headliners that Towson got for its spring concert, but what I found interesting was that Maryland seemed to alternate each year between a white headliner and a black headliner. One year they announced The Chainsmokers, back before they got big, and that made people very angry and so they announced Jessie J after that. Another year they announced Lil Dicky, but for whatever reason people were not pleased with the concept of a white novelty rapper, so they followed that by announcing that Big Sean and Wale would be the headliners. This spring, from what I hear, people were not pleased with the performance that 2 Chainz gave? I don't know; I was several states away. For my money, the best musical experience I ever got courtesy of the University of Maryland was at Midnight Madness 2014, when we all came to watch Melo Trimble for the first time and stayed for the mystery musical guest, which turned out to be Rae Sremmurd. This was pre-SremmLife, so Rae Sremmurd performed "No Flex Zone" and "No Type" and then left because they had no other songs to do. Looking back, "No Flex Zone" didn't really have staying power once the novelty wore off, but "No Type" is still a really good song.

Anyway, Maryland booked MGMT for their spring concert one year when I was there, and then if I recall correctly MGMT didn't perform "Kids" and left a lot of students very upset. It seems like an odd decision on their part. This other song is fine but it's not "Kids".

One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Independent Women Part 1 by Destiny's Child

When I started playing quizbowl at Maryland, most tournaments would be followed by a club trip to that most exciting College Park destination, Brian's house. (Ophir gets mad when I call it Brian's house, because it's true that Brian moved out and Ophir didn't. However, because I am a descriptivist and not a prescriptivist, I think my decision to continue to call it Brian's house is validated by the fact that everyone else in quizbowl also still does that. I think that last year or the year before, someone on Chicago was confused by the fact that Brian is at Michigan even though Brian's house is in College Park; naturally I was delighted by this.) Brian's house is the site of many of my most cherished quizbowl memories, like that time I first met Matt Bollinger and proceeded to have an animated argument with him about whether Joe Harris could make it in the NBA (I seem to have been wrong about this), or that time we decided to play academic charades and I made Matt Bollinger act out the word "Lysenkoism".

A more mundane memory of Brian's house is the time I was there and someone (probably Brian, but I guess possibly Sarang or someone else) decided to put on the album-length video that Daft Punk made for Discovery. It made for pretty good background entertainment while we were all holding our own conversations or whatever. I'm not sure I'm that interested in paying more attention to it than that; Daft Punk has never really grabbed me.

Bad Romance by Lady Gaga vs. Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips

When I was a sophomore in high school, in the 2009–10 school year, I took a studio art class in order to knock out that requirement for application to the University of California system. The class consisted largely of spending 50 minutes sitting and drawing while the teacher played top-40 radio for the class. My memories of that class aren't very positive, since I got a C (which I didn't even know was possible in a high school art class without being habitually truant) and I ended up getting rejected by six out of nine UC campuses, but at least Lady Gaga's omnipresence on the top-40 radio of the day led to my developing an appreciation for her oeuvre.

After I finished directing the Georgia Tech site of 2017 SCT (where I played the D2 set because of the limited field size and somehow put up worse statistics than the first time I played D2 SCT), I went to watch the Super Bowl at the apartment of a fellow transplant to Atlanta. Everyone present was more interested in the halftime show than the actual game, which was fine with me because I completely stopped following the NFL when the 49ers stopped being good, and I felt good about myself because my Lady Gaga knowledge was sufficient to keep up in a room full of Lady Gaga fans. Then when it seemed like the Falcons had the game in hand, of course we got into it because it would be cool to have a Super Bowl victory parade in our town, which meant that we experienced the same crushing disappointment as every other household in America. That night could have been more fun.

Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Stuck Between Stations by The Hold Steady

The Seed (2.0) by The Roots featuring Cody Chestnutt vs. Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine

Several times a month, I venture to College Park to play trivia at Looney's Pub on the north side of campus (the better half of town, and also the half of town that quizbowl people generally don't know very well). It takes nearly an hour to get from where I live to College Park using public transportation, but the trip there and back is worth it because the prizes are good ($50 card for first place, $30 card for second place, $20 card for third place, with the caveat that you have to use it that night) and because it's easy to win (my team of three wins first place at least half the time). My team's modus operandi is to build a big lead early, which is necessary because every time we get screwed by the music round, when they play ten songs and ask us to name them and we're never ever able to get more than half. This Florence + The Machine song, in particular, is one that I've missed multiple times. Usually it doesn't matter, but it's still frustrating. Maybe it's not a very memorable song.

All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem vs. Lose Yourself by Eminem

When I was in third grade, I had a classmate who did not like me at all and was vocal about that dislike. There's a good chance she was justified in that opinion; as one might imagine, I was probably a pretty unpleasant eight-year-old. She was, however, equally as vocal about liking The Eminem Show, which at that time had just been released. Thanks to her, on Mike Bentley's website you can find a recording of 2016 ICT where I get 15 points on a tossup on "closets" thanks to my knowledge of "Cleanin' Out My Closet", a song that I have never actually heard.

In spite of that ICT power, I've never really liked Eminem. He's a technically proficient rapper, but while I enjoy hip-hop I need something more than successful rapping to pull me in, and Eminem doesn't generally provide that.

Like presumably every young person in America, I do not need to listen to "Hey Ya" to hear it in my brain. It was so gigantic that it's now a wedding staple (despite the content of the lyrics). "Blind" in its electric-disco oddness doesn't stand a chance.

Time to Pretend by MGMT vs. The Funeral by Band of Horses

Two songs I don't know (I've heard "Kids" a bunch - but that's fine, this song sounds almost exactly like "Kids"). MGMT seems to have a talent for taking elements I should like (electronica, harmonies, synth melodies) and making them mildly irksome. This other song starts off soft and lilting and inoffensive, and when we speed up, we sound somewhat like a lower-fi MGMT! I don't mind it, but it's going to have trouble versus anything actively good.

One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Independent Women Part 1 by Destiny's Child

Why is "One More Time" five and a half minutes long? I speculate that it's only to be played on occasions where you're not meant to notice the passage of time (ironically, given the title). For all the kudos they've received, and deserve, Destiny's Child released a good amount of ugly music carried mostly by charisma. This song falls into this category, for sure. Tough call.

Bad Romance by Lady Gaga vs. Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips

Walkover.

Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Stuck Between Stations by The Hold Steady

Walkover. The Hold Steady would have put up a fight if their singer could sing.

The Seed (2.0) by The Roots featuring Cody Chestnutt vs. Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine

This Roots song is all right - it's got a solid riff and a good, understated flow to it, decent vocal melody. But "Dog Days are Over" is such a steamroller that you need something transcendent to knock it out.

All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem vs. Lose Yourself by Eminem

I realize liking indie music, or growing up and developing musical tastes in general, results in a certain degree of contrarianism, but claims like the one that Eminem "has never been good" should be buried in a deep hole. I can understand not liking something - it's universal and human. But this "All My Friends" song seems to me a bit droning and monotonous, sort of an approachable version of Godspeed You Black Emperor. It never picks up. A bit corny as it is, "Lose Yourself" wins in a no-contest.

Rehab by Amy Winehouse vs. The Fear by Lily Allen

Just doing pop-soul by itself led to novelty in terms of the instrumentation and feel of Song #1, although I did find it a bit repetitive. It was fine, but didn't speak to me much. I think I prefer the playfulness and the wit of Song #2.

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Blind by Hercules and Love Affair
It's gonna take a lot to beat Hey Ya!. Blind has really grown on me over the past week, it definitely could've put up a much better fight against some weaker entries.

Time to Pretend by MGMT vs. The Funeral by Band of Horses
This vote just might be because I like Kids and Electric Feel much more, but The Funeral feels like the type of song that would be great to listen to when I'm feeling a bit melancholy.

One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Independent Women Part 1 by Destiny's Child
I'm so glad that One More Time was the Daft Punk song chosen here; it is my jam. Never really got into Destiny's Child, but this song seems ok I guess.

Bad Romance by Lady Gaga vs. Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips
Bad Romance really holds up after listening after however many years it has been. Do You Realize?? still annoys me.

Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Stuck Between Stations by The Hold Steady
Take Me Out is a fantastic song and Stuck Between Stations isn't. Easy decision here.

The Seed (2.0) by The Roots featuring Cody Chestnutt vs. Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine
I don't think I've ever actually heard a Roots song before, but this left a really good impression. Not enough to beat a F+tM masterpiece though.

All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem vs. Lose Yourself by Eminem
All My Friends isn't really doing anything for me, and Lose Yourself is actually an iconic song so it wins out here.

Rehab by Amy Winehouse vs. The Fear by Lily Allen
I like both Valerie and Back to Black more than Rehab, but I can understand why the biggest Amy Winehouse song makes it here. I adore The Fear though, especially the sun and the mirror line.

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Blind by Hercules and Love Affair
I enjoy Outkast, and will vote for them plenty in this bracket, I'm sure, but I'll throw an ultimately meaningless vote against it here for the best song in this bracket I had never heard before, just as an acknowledgement.

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Blind by Hercules and Love Affair
"Blind" was kind of monotonous, and "Hey Ya!" is probably going to the final four at least.

Time to Pretend by MGMT vs. The Funeral by Band of Horses
I knew "Time to Pretend" but not "The Funeral" before this bracket. "Time to Pretend" is catchy, but again I feel like it's incredibly monotonous. "The Funeral" has a lot more emotion and I think it's more interesting to listen to.

One More Time by Daft Punk vs. Independent Women Part 1 by Destiny's Child
It's too bad that "Independent Women" is so far getting crushed this badly! "One More Time" has a fun beat, but I find that much autotune really distracting and obnoxious. I admit that once I realized that this was just going to repeat itself a couple of times (with a break or two), I just dropped the needle a couple more times in the song. There is no reason why it needs to be five minutes and twenty seconds long. They ran out of ideas less than halfway in.

"Independent Women" has a great groove (as Ryan said) and a great "message."

Bad Romance by Lady Gaga vs. Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips
Not even close. Actually, I'll take "Bad Romance" to win in the next round, too, and only lose to "Hey Ya," which is fine. This song holds up surprisingly well 8 years later. The Fame Monster is a stellar album–there's not a bad song on there.

Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand vs. Stuck Between Stations by The Hold Steady
Oh, that's what this song is called! To me, "Take Me Out" has always been "the song where the break kind of sounds like 'Black Betty.'" Another song where it kind of seems like a couple of disjoint ideas were smashed together, but all of them rock, so it's okay.

I actually liked "Stuck Between Stations" a lot better when I listened to it this time than when I listened to it during the play-in voting. But not only do I still not like his voice, the talking parts are also terribly mixed with respect to the instruments, making him super hard to understand.

The Seed (2.0) by The Roots featuring Cody Chestnutt vs. Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine
I didn't really "get" Florence and the Machine back when I had basically only heard this song--I didn't like her voice or how the first half of the song was so ~ethereal~. Seeing her at Lollapalooza convinced me to give her another chance; she was much more energetic and it just endeared me to her style overall. I bought Lungs when I got home and liked it. Also, the Glee cover of this song was really good, fight me.

All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem vs. Lose Yourself by Eminem
Just another white girl originally from the suburbs who's a huge stan. ;( I'm disappointed in me, too.

Rehab by Amy Winehouse vs. The Fear by Lily Allen
"The Fear" is really catchy, but Amy Winehouse's incredible vocals take the cake any day.
