Re: ELITE EIGHT: Best Song of the 2000s
Can't believe that Crazy, Jesus Walks, and 99 Problems are no longer here. Those are a lot better than some of the songs on this list.
Anyway, on with the ballot:
Mr. Brightside: I do not think either should win, but Toxic is still no different than any other pop song of the 2000s to me. At least Brightside is something different.
Paper Planes: I simply do not get why people like Chicago even though Sufjan Stevens can't sing to save his life.
Hey Ya!: Take me out is good and all, but Hey Ya! has a certain energy and vigor that Take Me Out does not.
Hurt: American Boy has had a great run as an underdog, but Hurt is simply too deep.

I will never not love this song
Chicago by Sufjan Stevens
Despite the scurrilous libel being hurled its way by some people, Chicago is in fact a Good Song
Hey Ya! by Outkast
Not really close
Hurt by Johnny Cash[/quote]

Re: ELITE EIGHT: Best Song of the 2000s
Mr. Brightside by The Killers vs. Toxic by Britney Spears
Toxic has two things going for it: good production and a great sample. Otherwise, it's just a generic 2000s pop song. Mr. Brightside is just a great song throughout.
Paper Planes by M.I.A. vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens
Hot take: the Paper Planes love in this bracket is almost entirely nostalgia. As someone who lived under a rock for most of the 00s, it's good, but it's not that good. Speaking of nostalgia, Chicago makes me feel nostalgic for things I never even experienced. That's quite an accomplishment, so it gets my vote.
Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand
This was a hard one. I'm pissed at y'all for kicking out Bad Romance, but I'm still voting for Hey Ya. It's just so ... distinctive. Take Me Out is a well-executed rock song with an amazing riff, but the repetitiveness of the second half just reeks of wasted potential.
Side note: whenever I see the title of Take Me Out, I think of Out Tonight from RENT.
American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West vs. Hurt by Johnny Cash
I'm a sucker for a good underdog story, but Hurt is incredible.

Re: ELITE EIGHT: Best Song of the 2000s
Mr. Brightside by The Killers vs. Toxic by Britney Spears. Shame on me for forgetting to vote last round and letting Crazy lose by one vote. Mr. Brightside is kind of boring apart from the high point in the chorus.
Paper Planes by M.I.A. vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens. As much as I love Sufjan, Chicago is... not one of the top four songs of the decade, but I'll keep voting for it as long as it keeps getting matched up against songs I can't stand.
Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand. I like Outkast, but not enough to vote for them twice in a row.
American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West vs. Hurt by Johnny Cash. American Boy, a song I was only vaguely aware of before this bracket, is by far my favorite among the remaining songs.

Mr. Brightside
I love this song. I like but don't love Toxic.
Chicago
I do like Paper Planes. But it doesn't stand up to Chicago for me. (Also, I don't think either of these are their artsits' best, but oh, well.)
Hey Ya!
The archetypal example of a meme song also being good. This one was close for me.
Hurt
I feel bad voting for a cover over an original song, but I really like this. It's also one of my favourite song-music video combos, they work great together,

Toxic - the only good song that routinely gets played at carleton's god-awful parties
Paper Planes - the best song of the 2000s
Hey Ya! - not a big fan of this one, but much better than take me out, which is lame and boring
Hurt - only for this

Paper Planes by M.I.A. vs. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens- the people who are abstaining on this matchup because they think neither song is worthy to be here or the ones who hate Sufjan Stevens have... interesting opinions.
Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand
American Boy by Estelle featuring Kanye West vs. Hurt by Johnny Cash- this is a tough decision. However, Hurt has a total of zero Kanye West features, so I'm going to have to vote against it.

Hi everyone,
I wanted to announce that I'll be doing another bracket in about a month or month and a half (between prepping for it and the conclusion of this one). It'll be covering songs from the 1970s.

It don't really get this take. What is it supposed to make people nostalgic for? The Bush administration? Or are there thousands of huge Slumdog Millionaire fans out there whom I have (thankfully) managed to avoid? Does it remind people of the music of the late 2000s, even though it was the only song of the time on the radio that sounded at all like it did? I think it's more believable that many people just think it's a great song.matt2718 wrote:Hot take: the Paper Planes love in this bracket is almost entirely nostalgia. Yeah, I'd have to agree here. I find people's tastes often inexplicable (with this same song, even), but I try not to ascribe them unspoken motivations.Muriel Axon wrote:It don't really get this take.
