I've probably been "Paper Planes"' biggest detractor in this contest, but if you don't want to sound repetitive, maybe don't repeat every single verse right after the first time it's deployed. And to be fair, I don't dislike it because it's repetitive (3/4 of these songs are rather repetitive), but because I don't like how it sounds. Yet quite a few other people seem to love this song, and that's fine.

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Hurt by Johnny Cash

Listening to "Hey Ya!" for the fourth (fifth?) time, the seams are really starting to show. I'm certainly enjoying it far less. It is more a collection of (admittedly, quite catchy) elements and episodes, with a static beat, largely devoid of meaning; it is a dance song, and an excellent one, to an extent because of that absence at its heart. I find it somewhere between 30 and 60 seconds too long - probably because I've only heard a radio edit that excises the outro. I find myself waiting for it to end.

I've probably heard "Hurt" several hundred times in my life, and it remains as effective as it did the first time. I find myself appreciating its nuances upon further reflection and concentration, and its directness - its metaphors and meanings are not hidden whatsoever - transcends the original (I don't discount it as a cover, no more than I do "All Along the Watchtower") because the subject is so empathetic, and odd, and nihilistic, for a pop song of any kind. Its crescendo is almost unbearably moving. It has my vote.

These two should be in the final mainly because of the immense staying power they have in the popular consciousness. The fact that these two songs have managed to stay relevant for so long has to count for something. Also, these songs are both very good.

Most of the songs that I really like were taken out early, but I'm glad to see that "Paper Planes" has been an exception. Props to "Mr. Brightside" for taking out "Crazy," but I still think that it is overrated.

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Hurt by Johnny Cash'

I am not big on either song, and it is tempting to vote for "Hurt" because I like Johnny Cash far more than Outkast and because "Hey Ya!" was so overplayed when it first came out, but I'm casting my vote for "Hey Ya!" because of 1) the nostalgia factor, and 2) I just don't think that the song that is crowned as the best of the 2000s should be a cover of an earlier song by an artist who was at his peak far earlier.

Hey Ya! by Outkast vs. Hurt by Johnny Cash - For most of the voting I've just gone with whichever I thought was the better song, regardless of its cultural importance / nostalgia / how emblematic of the 2000s it is. I'm not sure I can say for sure in this line up, though. In the absence of a clear winner on that front, "Hey Ya!" definitely feels like the more "early 2000s song" of the two, so I have to go with that.

After my last comment, I listened to Paper Planes again, trying to see the appeal. And I think I get it now. I can definitely see how this song made it to the final four, and I take back what I said about nostalgia.

WHY I AM PERSONALLY INVESTED IN THE RESULTS OF THIS ROUND'S VOTES:

1) The "Mr. Brightside" video is probably the first music video I ever saw. In and of itself, it isn't a particularly revelatory example of the form - especially compared to the "Hey Ya" and "Hurt" videos, masterpieces both - but it stuck with me the way Firsts tend to do. For example: I've always been charmed by the way Brandon Flowers tugs on and brushes his jacket in time with the words "just fine" in the song's first verse. Little details of performance and character design like that - Eric Roberts' lecherous stare; Flowers' Hot Topic-style eyeshadow; that one back-up dancer who's been painted blue for some reason (is she supposed to be Vishnu? Smurfette?) - are what have sustained my interest in film/video to this day. So thank you, "Mr. Brightside" - should I ever worm my way into academia (God forbid!), it's Brandon Flowers' fault.

2) I can't sing, and I can't dance, and I'm bad at musical instruments. My one vaguely musical talent is that I can imitate the way Andre 3000 sings the words "OH OH" during breakdown of this song. As party tricks go, this one's pretty niche, and you wouldn't think that it could impress people. But it does. I'm serious. The next time you see me - SCT, ICT, whenever - ask me to demonstrate this ability, and I will blow your mind.

I have a very happy memory of being in Oxford, and (drunkenly) demonstrating my Andre 3000-imitating skill to a then-stranger who has since become a close friend. He literally laughed himself off of his barstool. Because I do not usually have this kind of effect on people, it must be inferred that Andre 3000 and Big Boi were DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for the arrival of this friend into my life. Which is just what "Hey Ya" does, people: bring lonely people together. It deserves my vote, and yours.
