I know there's going to be a song I really like in every cut, but this one definitely stings. "Werewolves of London" better be in the final bracket.

Hopefully the only hip hop song to chart in the 1970s (Rapper's Delight) makes it in purely on that?

Probably, though I don't feel terribly safe saying anything yet given I still have about 2700 songs to go through.

Good question. I usually separate them out, so they can have one entry under both. Exceptions are applied arbitrarily; the best example to me is that there's no real difference between solo Paul McCartney and Wings.

Hey, I could use some help. There's a million songs by David Bowie & The Rolling Stones on this list. If anyone would like to make an argument that any of these songs are the best by those artists - because, again, I'm choosing just one song - it'd help me save some time.

First, the Stones, for whom I'm probably going to pick Beast of Burden:

All Down the Line
Before They Make Me Run
Bitch
Coming Down Again
Dead Flowers
Far Away Eyes
Fool to Cry
Hot Stuff
I Got the Blues
I Just Want to See His Face
Let It Loose
Little Queenie
Loving Cup
Memory Motel
Moonlight Mile
Rip This Joint
Shattered
Shine a Light
Sister Morphine
Some Girls
Star Star
Sway
Sweet Black Angel
Sweet Virginia
Time Waits for No One
Torn and Frayed
Ventilator Blues
Winter

And now, Bowie, who will probably be represented by "Changes" or "Heroes" or "Young Americans" or one of like 20 other songs because this is going to be one of the hardest cutdowns I'll ever have to do:

A New Career in a New Town
Aladdin Sane (1913-1938-197?)
All the Young Dudes
Always Crashing in the Same Car
Andy Warhol
Art Decade
Be My Wife
Beauty and the Beast
Boys Keep Swinging
Breaking Glass
Can You Hear Me
D.J.
Diamond Dogs
Drive-In Saturday
Fantastic Voyage
Hang on to Yourself
Joe the Lion
John, I'm Only Dancing
Kooks
Look Back in Anger
Panic in Detroit
Queen Bitch
Quicksand
Stay
Sweet Thing
The Bewlay Brothers
The Width of a Circle
Time
TVC15
Warszawa
We Are the Dead
Wild Is the Wind
Word on a Wing

Thanks!

I was chatting with Fred about picking songs for the bracket, and he mentioned that sometimes a great album doesn't have any standout singles for the bracket. In the Stones' case, I think that's true of Exile on Main Street; the strength of the album lies in its consistency and its evocation of a very specific mood, neither of which can be conveyed all that well by one song.

So: my pick for best Stones song of the Seventies is Dead Flowers. It's Mick and Keith doing what they do best -- country and blues tinged throughout with sadness, sweetness, and humor.

Honorable mention goes to "Sister Morphine", "Sway", "Shine A Light", and "Lovin' Cup".

Dear Fred,

I, like you, cannot easily pick between Bowie (practically his entire mainstream creative output was in the '70s), but I can offer you a truncated version of the list, even tho' it pains me to do so:

Aladdin Sane (1913-1938-197?)
Beauty and the Beast
Look Back in Anger
Panic in Detroit

For things not on this list, I have to assume that "Starman" and "Ziggy Stardust" are on the survivors list, and both are brilliant pop songs - if the choice isn't either of them, I would drop "Changes", "Heroes", and "Young Americans" in favor of "Golden Years", or, as a personal favorite, "Station to Station": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAj2iX9xqCo

The song "Space Oddity" was first released in 1969, and the album Let's Dance was released in 1983, just after he and Queen released "Under Pressure" in 1982. Let's Dance was his most popular album.

Bowie fans tend to like his 70s stuff best, which is fine, but he was very mainstream and somewhat creative during the 80s. That's also when he and Jagger did a horrible but popular cover of "Dancing in the Street".

This is a small matter, but since I feel mildly impugned, I want to submit some explanatory words here. Don't take it the wrong way - I'm a big Bowie fan and own most of these albums. Here's my breakdown of the David Bowie discography:

David Bowie - 1967 (debut - no acclaim)

The albums people listen to
Space Oddity - 1969 (breakthrough)
The Man Who Sold the World - 1970
Hunky Dory - 1971
Ziggy Stardust - 1972
Aladdin Sane - 1973
Pin Ups - 1973
Diamond Dogs - 1974
Young Americans - 1975
Station to Station - 1976
The Berlin Trilogy
Low - 1977
Heroes - 1977
Lodger - 1979
Bowie's commercial early-80s second wind
Scary Monsters - 1980
Let's Dance - 1983

His admittedly-weak mid-80s stuff
Tonight - 1984 (last single, "Blue Jean", to be on the greatest hits album Changesbowie)
Never Let Me Down - 1987

Later-career stuff; sometimes critically acclaimed, not commercially relevant
Black Tie White Noise - 1993
Outside - 1995
The Buddha of Suburbia - 1995
Earthling - 1997 ("I'm Afraid of Americans", his last pre-posthumous charting single)
Hours - 1999
Heathen - 2002
Reality - 2003
Outside - 2004
The Next Day - 2013
Blackstar - 2017

I feel like my statement, that his mainstream output is mostly '70s, still stands.

Hopefully I'm not too late to the party

My pick for Bowie's song is Heroes
My pick for the Rolling Stones' song is All Down the Line or Tumbling Dice

Another artist who had an amazing seventies output is Stevie Wonder. This is Superstition's game to lose, but I think all of the following are also deserving candidates (especially Living for the City, which is better than Superstition IMO.)

Sir Duke https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6fPN5aQVDI
As https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWhMyOs0pCQ

As a final note, I know it's super long, but Whipping Post from At Fillmore East should also be considered.

I'm not sure which Bowie or Rolling Stones, but those are solid choices. Stevie Wonder is incredibly hard to determine. Absolutely agree on Whipping Post.

Same goes for the Stevie Wonder songs and "Superstition." I get that we want to prevent a few artists clogging up the bracket, but some definitive 70's hits are getting chopped because of this one song per artist rule. Maybe we can consider expanding the bracket and shortening voting time to compensate for the increased amount of entries?

Seems like this exercise could have best been done the same way the NCAA does things--give autobids to 40 or so "must-have artists" and then assess the one-hit wonders.
