I'm glad someone other than me believes in Parliament/Funkadelic and ELO, but I think I would substitute solo Neil Young for CSNY, and as much as I love Kool and the Gang, I think the Eagles had a bigger decade. Also, what is Skynard?

As long as Mr. Blue Sky makes the cut, I will be more or less content with the list.

I intended for solo Neil Young is included in the CSNY. Anyway, Skynyrd (sp.) was southern rock. They did Free Bird, Sweet Home Alabama, etc.

Anyway, my list of bands basically just goes to show how hard it will be to whittle this thing down. I'm not arguing that any of these bands should or shouldn't end up on the final list. Clearly some pretty much have to (Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, for example), but there are definitely going to be big acts that don't make it, especially if room is made for one hit wonders.

I'd upgrade The Eagles, The Police, John Denver, and Dire Straits. They were definitely more prolific and produced better quality music over this decade than, say, the Isley Brothers.

Hot take: under the one-song-per-artist rule, Dire Straits are a top ten group in this bracket.

Oh, those were just the bands that came to my head after putting in the top list. Definitely not saying that The Police are less prolific or whatever than the Isley Brothers or whatever. But Whose That Lady by the Isleys would likely be on a shortlist if not the final, I'd assume.

I mean, just a few other acts that I didn't originally list include The Temps, Van Morrison, Tom Petty, Carly Simon, The Pretenders, Peter Frampton, and, as I noted earlier, the list goes on. These are just the acts I can think of off the top of my head, so in no way am I implying that some of these bands are more worthy than others. When it gets down to it, we're probably going to end up discussing whether, say, The Ramones should be on instead of The Sex Pistols or something like that (just an example, not a literal choice we have to debate right now, lol).

Money for Nothing is an all-time great intro tacked on to six minutes of letdown. Sultans of Swing is better all-around, IMO.

Money for Nothing was released in 1985. In fact, Dire Straits only released three singles in the 1970s. Sultans of Swing will deservedly contend in this bracket, but it’s the only song of theirs that deserves consideration now.

My hot take is that Walk of Life (also from 1985) is better than either of the aforementioned songs.

I guess this was done because of September. Personally I think that song is overrated and Boogie Wonderland and Shining Star are more deserving of a spot.

This better be to let La bombe humaine into the bracket. Also Rockollection is a kick-arse song, and you know it.

Lennon was a typo; that should have been Mind Games that was cut.

For Bill Withers I'm going with "Ain't No Sunshine."

I can understand Lean on Me (Ain't No Sunshine), but Mind Games? Really??

"Ain't No Sunshine" is a nice song, but I really think "Lean on Me" should be in the bracket instead, it's had a much bigger cultural impact.

Play-in game????

TBH, both are good songs and I’ll be fine with either. I certainly don’t think its a cut and dry case.

Two more cases of "I would've chosen differently but I really can't argue", with "Sweet Baby James" and "Behind Blue Eyes" getting the axe this time.

"Behind Blue Eyes" is a fine but flawed song, and I wouldn't spring to its defense if it was a question of trying to pick basically the best Who song ever to compete. Its message is also pretty cloying and juvenile, in terms of the lyrics.

It was supposed to be the villain's song in a rock opera. I think it works decently well within that setting.

Is this because of "Rasputin"? "Rivers of Babylon" was a much bigger hit and is one of the UK's top ten-selling singles of all time. I don't know if you were allowing Christmas songs but if you are, "Mary's Boy Child" should definitely be considered as well.

So the Cat Stevens choice is "Wild World"? I can respect that, but for my money "Father and Son" is a much better song and with more impact.
