Scattergories 2

Post by women, fire and dangerous things »

Now that the spring open is semi-announced, I'd like to announce my follow-up to Scattergories, which I'd love to have played as a spring open side event. A bunch of the set is written, and it should be done by early 2018.

The distribution will be pretty much the same as the first Scattergories, except that there's only 1 guaranteed drama question and 1 guaranteed auditory arts question per round. Like the first Scattergories, it'll cost $10 to play. It will be a bit easier than the first edition, with a higher quotient of whimsical common links and a lower quotient of impossible answerlines.

Full distro:

3 fiction
3 poetry
1 drama
1 non-fiction
2 my choice lit
3 painting/sculpture
2 film
2 other visual arts
1 auditory arts
1 my choice arts
1 philosophy
1 social science
1 religion/mythology
2 my choice

There'll be less than 1 ling per round, but as before, the social science will be heavily skewed towards ling and psych.

Quick update now that the set's mostly written - the above statement is still kinda true, but I doubt the set as a whole will turn out any easier than the first edition, which was really dang hard. That said, it's certainly more whimsical than the first edition, and I think it should be great fun.

Could a moderator set up a private discussion forum for this set?

This was a highly enjoyable set. I thought it was more whimsical and...somewhat easier, I guess than the first (also highly enjoyable) set? I have no idea of comparing.

Hi - just out of interest, is there any plan to do an online mirror on the Discord or something similar?

Just curious as I absolutely loved reading through the packets for the first Scattergories and would be interested in having a stab (and probably failing) at this year's version.

(As a Brit, I don't think I'd have any chance of playing a mirror otherwise...)

I hadn't thought about it, but yeah, if there's interest I might as well run an online mirror. If anyone else is interested, let me know, along with any preferences about date/time.

I would love an online mirror as this didn't end up mirrored at the CMST site I played at. Random weekends are typically fine, or even a weekday night. I have no strong preference on time; maybe not this weekend.

This tournament was a lot of fun. I have particularly liked the literature in these sets. It plays a lot more to my tastes than standard quizbowl literature (which is not to say that standard quizbowl lit should necessarily move in this direction, but it's nice to have a tournament every once in a while that has a distribution like this).

The last physical mirror of this has happened. I've only heard from a handful of people who are interested in an online mirror, but I'd run one if enough people express interest. Please let me know soon if you'd be interested - otherwise I'll just go ahead and post the set.

I've now heard from a few more people, so we should have enough interest for at least a small mirror. Signup spreadsheet is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing.

My plan is to run this on Skype starting on Saturday, April 7, starting at 11:00 AM Eastern to accommodate various time zones. It should run pretty quickly. If there's anyone for whom that time doesn't work, let me know.

I can hopefully contribute something to the lit distribution, and not much else. If this sounds like something you want on your team hit me up.

Would it be possible to run this on Discord instead? It's a substantially better experience.

Also, are team sizes going to be smaller than 4?

There are currently only eight people signed up, and I don't think doubles teams will be too fun for a set of this difficulty, so what I'll do is just run this as a (free-of-charge) shootout. I've never used Discord before but I'm signing up now and it seems easy to use, so I'll run it there instead. Same time (Saturday, April 7 at 11:00 AM Eastern) - I'll post a Discord link in this thread on Saturday morning.

Will, since you're doing this as a singles shootout, is it okay if I play just for an hour or hour and a half?

Scores for the online shootout:

Joe Crowther: 70 (wasn't there for the whole thing)
Conor Thompson: 140
Nick Collins: 265
Jason Thompson: 325
Itamar Naveh-Benjamin: 650
Brendan McKendy: 210 (wasn't there for the whole thing)
Michael Zhuang: 330

Now that the set's clear, I'll be posting it to the archives, and people are free to discuss it if they'd like.
