Side Event Open: Organization

Post by Cheynem »

So this is operating under the assumption that the widely successful side event open system of the last two years will be brought back again. I will try and list the various events that have been floated in an attempt to see what events we have and if the authors of the events can provide updates if they will be finished in time. If you have an event but have not made an announcement, please do so here.

I am not counting full tournaments here, but those could be of some interest for mirrors, such as NASAT, Canadian Hybrid, the John Charles Daly trash tournament, etc.

If I didn't count your event, I probably just missed the announcement, so please post details here (or a link). In particular, trash side events seemed pretty vaguely announced.

Stuff that was played at national tournaments but may not have been played by everybody: Historiature, SOUNDTRACK, Geography Monstrosity, Let's Remember Some Guys.

Stuff That Remains in a State of Limbo (i.e. they were announced some time ago but were never really finalized)
OCTAVIAN--classics

Stuff That Was Specifically Announced for the Summer (i.e., I would guess the events we would most consider)
*The Human Use of Human Beings--Mike Bentley's "tech," tossups only (*)
*Words and Objects--hard academic stuff about "objects," by Berkeley people, tossups only (*)
*RAPTURE--religion, Vasa Clarke, tossups only (*)
*Imaginary Landscape No. 4--audio music, John Lawrence (may be played at CO?) (*)
*WORLDSTAR--world stuff, Jakob Myers and co. (*)
*FILM--film, Raynor Kuang, tossups only (both academic and trash) (*)
*FTP 3--dubious trash, Michigan State, short tossup-bonus
*SNICK--90s trash, Erik Nelson, tossups only (*)
*Chomping Down at Shoney's--goofy film [trash], Mike Cheyne, tossups only (I expect to get this done once I'm done teaching this semester)

Surely Eliza Grames is doing some trash set???

There's kind of a lack of what I would call flagship academic sets, but assuming they're finished, I could see RAPTURE, Words and Objects, and Human Use of Human Beings being the centerpiece of a day, followed by a dispersal of the various trash side events and Imaginary Landscape throughout the evening and the next day. I've put asterisks by what I would guess would be the events that have the most interest for now, which would make a pretty solid Saturday-Sunday schedule (and probably room for other things).

Again please correct me if I missed anything.

Based on my experience at a couple events of this type, I would guess:

*Saturday can (fairly) easily run 4 tossup only side events. Things get somewhat more fluid if there are bonuses or if the event is a different format (like Imaginary Landscape). Last year, we ran 4 events (one was tossup/bonus). Two years ago we ran 3 events (one was tossup/sort of bonus).

*Sunday, because people typically need to leave, can usually run less. I'd say 3 tossup only side events might be the comfortable max. Shootouts are also a good way to pack some of the more niche stuff onto the schedule. Two years ago we did two tossup only events and then a bunch of shootouts.

I also didn't know if Tricon was running this year; to be frank, I think the expiration date on that event is past but perhaps I'm a crank.

Given that FILM is a committed 10 packets, with a good amount of "canonical" academic content, I'd love to see it as one of the potential "centerpiece" events. Another idea is to try running a Sat/Sun combination academic tournament + many trash side events, though people might really want to just play side events.

Personally, I'd also love to play Human Use, looking forward to it!

Oh, I really want to play FILM too, I was just trying to separate "academic" type things from mixed/trash things. People can set whatever schedules they want, of course.

For Canadian hybrid, we're trying to figure out what more work we need to do before it gets played this summer. We will definitely offer a trash-only subset of the packets for sites without the time for a full tournament.

Do people want an un-Americanized set (i.e. the original set as is with edits on the existing content) for free, or an Americanized version for a small mirror fee?

While I appreciate the thought, I'd suggest hosts not to consider Words and Objects as one of the "centerpiece" events of a summer side-event open. With the whimsical nature of the tournament and distribution, the limited number of packets (likely ~5), and the relative writing inexperience of myself and James, I think the set would be better fit as one of the more casual events, played out on Saturday evening or on Sunday.

I'd be happy to put something together like last year during the month of August after I return from my internship. Possible weekends would be either August 4, 11, or 18. In my mind, a set like Canada Hybrid or one of the other longer academic sets like Oxford Open on Saturday with side events afterwards and on Sunday would be cool. I don't really have any huge preference for what side events get played and it would be based entirely on interest and packets. If people are interested, let me know ASAP so I can start planning. I heard on Discord there might be a side event weekend at University of Illinois and I would not want to step on the toes of those folks despite the low probability that I would be able to attend such an event.

On another note that is unrelated to a Midwest side event weekend, is there anything planned on the East Coast in June or July? I'd like to play quizbowl in some capacity while in I'm in NYC.

Thanks!

Illinois plans on hosting a side event weekend in August with details regarding that coming out hopefully soon.

There are rumblings of a CamO or OxO mirror coming together, with site TBD, with DC/Maryland, NYC, Penn, etc., as possible options. Will Alston (and presumably others) are talking about it. Not many details yet AFAIK.

I'd be interested in like a mirror at Michigan State of Canada Hybrid/Oxford Open whatever and maybe the Florida trash tournament on Sunday.

There's a possibility I could add bonuses to the 8 planned packets of The Human Use of Human Beings if there's a desire to make this tournament more of an "anchor" event. I'd only be able to do this if the tournament was mid-August or later.

At least for me, I'm cool with just as many events as possible. But Mike is one of the best writers today, so that might be fun too.

I've heard rumors of an Illinois mirror of this in August. Can this be announced at some point?

This sounds ideal to me but it's hard to plan this when I don't know when the Illinois event is. Given that we can't really host while I'm in New York, it is possible for the MSU event to be the late summer open in August and the other event at Illinois to be in June or July? Whatever it is, it's really hard to plan when stuff isn't publicly announced.

Yeah, announcement to come soon (finals week until Thursday so I'm a bit behind on getting the details sorted, but I should have a post up Friday/Saturday). It'll most likely be the weekend of August 11th.

I'm also looking into running a Boston event, with a main event on Saturday (I'm thinking NASAT right now) + smaller events dotted throughout Saturday & Sunday.

I'm not sure of the state of the MSU event, but would anyone/site be very against this happening? For reasons of redundancy, too far from any East Coasters who would actually want to attend, etc.

Ideally, it would be a field of 8 - 16 teams. I'd say there's currently a 30% I could get this to happen.

Actually, if you hold a Boston event while I'm in New York, I'd love to attend. That would be sweet. I don't see this working against an event at MSU or any other Midwest university.

If the Illinois event is in August, that makes it unlikely that MSU will host at all in the summer. I will travel to UIUC in August, but I imagine that there won't be a ton of other people there from Michigan--especially Metro Detroit-- at this event. A couple of Michigan open people have asked me about hosting an event but it looks doubtful with the current plans. I could try to get some rooms for an event to be ran while I'm in New York, but I'd need a TD and some MSU people to be there to help with stuff.

I would attend this (and potentially drag along a couple others) in June or August.

For people who are cagey about driving to Champaign-Urbana outright, I want to preemptively note that we could hopefully get several carpools from Chicago going (not to mention the bus/train options). If you can afford the flights to/from Chicago, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out the rest. But we can hash this out more if/when we get a tournament announcement from U of I.

We'll be having a weekend of quiz bowl most likely the weekend of August 4 in the Bay Area. We'll announce that once we figure out where we can host that. In the meantime, there's a poll up on the Northern California facebook group for side events.

I'd hoped for a Virginia site to materialize, but I haven't heard anything from my friends and I don't have the time (or the classrooms) to organize something myself. If there isn't a RAPTURE site within easy distance of me I'll look into doing an online mirror or something, and similarly I wouldn't be averse to playing online versions of certain side events, depending on how things look in a month and a half.

I would be willing to help with such a hypothetical event, but unfortunately I have zero leverage in terms of finding a host.
