UCLA Quizbowl is pleased to announce a Southern California mirror of the Stevenson Memorial Tournament, to be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018.

Eligibility:
This event will be open to undergraduate and high school teams; hybrid high school teams (teams with players from multiple high schools) are allowed for this mirror, but not hybrid college teams. Graduate students are in general not allowed, but those relatively new to quizbowl may be permitted to play with permission from the editors - please see the global announcement (linked above) for details.

Location:
Bunche Hall, UCLA

Schedule:
Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m.; play will begin at 9:00 a.m.

Fees:
Base fee: $120 per team
Working buzzer discount: $5 each
Approved moderator discount: $15 each
Travel discount: $5 per 50 miles one way (according to Google Maps)
Minimum fee: $40 per team

Registration and payment:
Please email [email protected] with the number of teams/buzzers/moderators you will be bringing, contact information including phone number, anticipated discounts, and a tentative player roster if possible. Payment may be made by Venmo (@hanto) or by check (payable to "Hidehiro Anto") on the day of the tournament; cash payment is discouraged but accepted as a last resort.

We will require a deposit of $20 from college teams, similar to that now required by UCSD. College teams must pay this deposit, which will go towards the registration fee, via Venmo (@hanto) by May 9, 2018. This deposit is non-refundable except in emergencies, at the discretion of the tournament director.

We are capping the field at 8 teams tentatively. This cap may be increased to 10 teams if we have sufficient staffers.

Some clarifications regarding the deposit:

1. The deposit is $20 per team, so if you are registering multiple teams you should pay the appropriate multiple of $20 upon registration.
2. The deposit does not apply to high school teams.
3. The deposit should be paid immediately upon registration; deposits will be returned in full for withdrawals on or before May 9, 2018, so there is no disadvantage to registering early.
4. Registrations (of college teams) without deposits will be considered incomplete until the deposit is paid.

This policy is intended to discourage and to mitigate the costs of very late withdrawals and no-shows, which have occurred unfortunately often in the past. If you have any concerns or further questions about the deposit, please contact us at [email protected].
