the most annoying thing about quizbowl

Post by wereplayingbasketball »

is when people say the word "bonuses".

The only correct plural of bonus is bonuses. Bonus is a latin word but it's an adjective, so its plural doesn't take an i.

"PLEASE MAKE FUN OF ME BECAUSE I SPEAK NEITHER LATIN NOR ENGLISH" is even worse. If there was a word from latin spelled"bonius", that happened to be a noun, then its plural would be PLEASE MAKE FUN OF ME BECAUSE I SPEAK NEITHER LATIN NOR ENGLISH.

so stop saying it, it sounds stupid anyway

The overuse of "titular" is probably more amusing than annoying.

I take it that you're pretty cool with the current state of quiz bowl in general if that's your least favorite thing.

I thought Latin adjectives (1) agreed in form with their nouns and (2) could be recruited to serve as nouns if need be. Well (2) is true in Spanish and French so I'm streching here and I eagerly defer to the "real" Latin scholars.

P.S. I always make sure to put in a few spare "titulars" in VHSL questions.

Actually, saying "bonuses" is silly even if it's right in Latin. The game is played in English, and the Anglicized plural is "bonuses".

This issue was raised before, and we came to the conclusion that only losers and British people say "PLEASE MAKE FUN OF ME BECAUSE I SPEAK NEITHER LATIN NOR ENGLISH." Screw the damn dirty Latin foreigners.

Also annoying: When people fail to accept obviously equivalent answers, like the morons who go "It's Arnolfini WEDDING, not Arnolfini MARRIGAGE. Hahahahahaha, STUPID." Die.

Another annoying thing is people who accept Khomeni for Khamenei because they didnt know there was a difference.

And then there's the misprononciation of Indian crap so I don't get it. One time, somebody pronounced Bharat "Barrett". Luckily I picked up what he was saying, and didn't completely embarrass myself.

No. Everything else about your post may be correct, but this is not. Full declension:

bonus bona bonum
bonuses bonae bonuses
bono bona bono
bonum bonam bonum
bono bona bono

bonuses bonae bona
bonorum bonarum bonorum
bonis bonis bonis
bonos bonas bona
bonis bonis bonis

Note that the bonuses form matches the bonus form in case (nominative) and gender (masculine).

Howard's right, but even as someone who studied Latin for ~4 years in middle school/high school, I absolutely agree that the whole "bonuses" thing is retarded and needs to stop. For my part, I make sure to say "bonuses" in every post and tournament announcement I make that references them.
"They sometimes get fooled by the direction a question is going to take, and that's intentional," said Reid. "The players on these teams are so good that 90 percent of the time they could interrupt the question and give the correct answer if the questions didn't take those kinds of turns. That wouldn't be fun to watch, so every now and then as I design these suckers, I say to myself, 'Watch this!' and wait 'til we're on camera. I got a lot of dirty looks this last tournament."

Howard, the genitive neutral plural of bonus is bonorum. . . .

I know someone who uses "bonuses" as a singular. That's even worse; it bothers the hell out of me.

I still say that we need to rename the "Bonus Conversion" statistic to "Bonage."

annoying

Post by wolfman »

One of the most annoying thing that has ever happened to our team was when I answered Reagan and was told that I was wrong because I wasn't specific enough. The next round someone literally answered Mr. Smith and was awarded points.

That was nothing compared to when the judges and this annoying little brunette cheated us out of the State finals. But that is a whole other rant.
