Florida Spring Tournament (FST) 2019 [Available 3/23/2019]
Florida Spring Tournament (FST) 2019 [Available 3/23/2019]
I am pleased to announce the second iteration of the Florida Spring Tournament (FST), an easy collegiate quiz bowl set. The set is planned to debut in mid March of 2019. The set will be head edited by me, Taylor Harvey, with Jonathen Settle, Alex Shaw, and Tracy Mirkin acting as subject editors in Science, Literature, and History respectively. The set will be written by members of the University of Florida, University of Central Florida, New College of Florida, Auburn University, Reformed Theological Seminary Orlando, and University of Colorado quiz bowl teams.
The target difficulty for the the tournament will be similar to FST 2018, now on the archive. The editors' vision for the set is to provide an accessible tournament for new college quiz bowl players that will still be engaging and interesting to players with more experience.
The set will consist of 12 power-marked packets of 24/24 (to be played as such, rather than stopping at 20/20). The choice of 24/24 rather than the more standard 20/20 was made to make more room for underrepresented slices of the distribution such as geography, current events/modern world, social science, and mixed/other academic questions. Toss ups will be between 6 and 7 lines in length, 10 pt font.
The distribution is as follows:
Literature (4/4)
1/1 Poetry
1/1 Long Fiction
1/1 Drama
1/1 Short Fictions, Essays, Mixed, or more of above
History (4/4)
1/1 American
1/1 British and European
1/1 World
1/1 Other/Mixed
Science (4/4)
1/1 Biology
1/1 Chemistry
1/1 Physics
1/1 Other Science (Astronomy, Computer Science, Earth Science, Engineering, etc)
Fine Arts (3/3)
1/1 Painting and Sculpture
1/1 Western Classical Music
1/1 Other Arts (Film, Jazz, Opera, Fashion, Architecture, Photography, World Music, etc)
RMP (3/3)
1/1 Mythology
1/1 Religion
1/1 Philosophy
Social Science (2/2)
1/1 Economics and Psychology (one in each packet)
1/1 Sociology, Anthropology, Linguistics, Political Science, and Culture Criticism
Other (4/4)
1/1 Geography
1/1 Current Events/ Modern World
1/1 Other and Mixed Academic Questions
1/1 Popular Culture
Total (24/24)
The main site for the tournament will be held at the University of Florida on March 23rd, 2019. The set will be available for mirrors the same day and will be stay available as long as there is interest, as late as summer 2019. Mirror fees will be $40 per non-house team. This is a closed set meaning teams of players from the same school may play it. Whether or not high school teams can play a particular mirror site will be up to the TD of that site. High school teams may play the main site in Gainesville.
If you would like to mirror the set, please email me at [email protected] or PM me on the forums.

Is this tournament too easy for me to respectably play, or is it designed for all teams to show up and do their thing?

I think that probably depends on the site strength. People with lots of experience are not explicitly banned from playing but it is written with newer players in mind. I'll say if you are comfortable playing college nationals-level questions you probably will not be challenged much by the content of this tournament.Sen. As the editing is being finished up for the set, we would love to playtest it on some of y'all! If you would like to play some quiz and give helpful feedback to the editing crew, please DM me or one of the other editors on the forums and we will give you the invite link to the FST Playtesting Discord server.
The first playtest will be biology and chemistry next week. A Doodle poll (edit: it's actually when2meet because Doodle is no good) is in the server, so you can fill it out when you join. Next weekend (Mar 8-10) will be some other, non-science categories with their own poll posted soon.
Edit2: If you already expressed interest to one of the editors privately, you should be receiving the Discord link. If you haven't gotten it, just let us know.

Re: Florida Spring Tournament (FST) 2019 [Available 3/23/2019]
Hello,
It says in the post for this tournament that it’s difficultly is regular minus (so EFT, Terrapin) but it also says it’s the same difficulty as 2018 FST which in turn is the same difficulty of 2017 ACF Fall. So which one is it?
Thanks,

The set is similar in difficulty to 2018 FST, and is a notch easier than EFT or Terrapin. The original post has been edited to remove the misleading term regular minus.Benin Rebirth Party wrote: ↑Fri Mar 15, 2019 12:17 am

We are strongly considering doing one. If it happens, it will certainly be after nats season is over. Announcement will be forthcoming once we decide, but for now expect late April or May.

I intend to do playtesting for the American History and World History either at sometime later tonight (9:00 or later), or tomorrow night at some similar time. If you would like to participate, please message me through either the forums or Discord so I can get an idea of how many people are available. I can also add you to our Discord server if you aren't already a member.

This post wasn't supposed to be here. I've reposted it in the main thread.
I've also decided to use this real estate to indicate that the discussion group is up!!! Anyone who has potential insight on the set, please feel free (we really do want it) to provide us with your feedback!

Since it seems like the online mirror of ILLIAC will likely be on May 18th/19th, what day are y'all considering for the FST mirror?

Re: Florida Spring Tournament (FST) 2019 [Available 3/23/2019]
I'd personally like to see a mirror in mid-to-late June. This is a pretty empty period in the quizbowl calendar and hopefully won't detract from any high school nationals set production.nycaqb1999 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2019 8:30 pmSince it seems like the online mirror of ILLIAC will likely be on May 18th/19th, what day are y'all considering for the FST mirror?
