I’m pleased to announce Imaginary Landscape No. 5, an audio music tournament written by myself (Kevin Wang), Benjamin Xu, and Michael Yue. This tournament will be played at the 2019 High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT).
FORMAT:
This tournament will comprise 8 rounds of 20 questions each, covering all musical genres but focusing on classical music. Each question will consist of pyramidally arranged audio clips, approximately 60 seconds in total. In the style of Imaginary Landscape No. 4, distribution will be by time period as follows:
2 pre-1750
3 1750 - 1830
5 1830 - 1910
3 1910 - present
1 film
1 jazz
1 musical
1 pop
3 miscellaneous, comprising either music that doesn’t fit a well-defined category or cross-period/genre common links.
Within the classical and miscellaneous questions, there will be at least 3 orchestral, 1 keyboard, 1 instrumental/chamber, 2 operas, 1 choral/vocal, and 0.5 dance per round.
Furthermore, this set will follow the wide-ranging difficulty scale employed in older IL sets. Roughly half the questions will be classified as “easy”, three-eighths as “medium”, and one-eighth as “hard”. As to what these difficulties mean, we found the IL3 post to be a useful guide:
LOGISTICS AND REGISTRATION:Eddie Kim wrote:Easy: accessible topics pervasive throughout culture and media, gettable by anyone who is not living under a rock
Medium: topics popular in the academic and concert repertoire, or otherwise exploring "deeper" works with accessible giveaways
Hard: deep, specialist, or niche topics
This event will take place at 8:30pm on Saturday evening at HSNCT. It will be a singles tournament using the ladder system, 8 players per room. There will be an initial seeding round of 20 questions, 5 rounds of ladder play of 20 questions each, and a finals round of 40 questions.
The HSNCT mirror is capped at 32 players. There is no fee. If anyone else is interested in mirroring this tournament, please contact me by email at [email protected].
