ACRO-Demia: Global Announcement
Play Quiz Bowl is very excited to announce ACRO-Demia an all-tossup set that will be available for mirrors in Summer 2020. While ACRO-Demia is an all pop culture set, all of its answer lines are things from the academic quiz bowl canon.
Distribution
Answer lines in ACRO-Demia are sorted according the academic categories in which they typically appear. Each packet will contain the following:
6/0 "Literature"
6/0 "History"
5/0 "Fine Arts"
2/0 "Religion/Mythology/Philosophy"
1/0 "Science"
Sub-distributions of the above are TBD, but there should be a mix similar to what you'd expect from, you know, real quiz bowl. We'll also be aiming to ensure that there's a reasonable balance of where the clues themselves come from (movies, music, video games, Simpsons references, etc.). Watch this space for updates/details on exactly how all of this will work.
Difficulty
Probably pretty hard.
Are you sure this isn't just an academic set?
Yes, I am extremely sure.
When can I play this definitely not academic tournament?
We'll have it ready for 2020's "Side Event Weekend," whenever that ends up being. If you'd like to schedule a mirror, you PM or email Erik Nelson (that's me).

I never thought I'd say this, but I want more science.

Should be at least 10 (like SNICK had), but if we can make more we certainly will.

Not yet - there might be one more mirror this summer. Once that happens/doesn't happen, I'll make sure it gets posted.Habitat_Against_Humanity wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2019 3:54 pmOff topic, but was SNICK ever posted?InvadErGII wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2019 2:36 pmShould be at least 10 (like SNICK had), but if we can make more we certainly will.

Is this going to happen in some form (whether delayed or not)?

Yes! Our intention is to run it in the fall, presumably online. Watch this space for updates.

Re: ACRO-Demia: Global Announcement
A few updates!
- This is just about done. It's pretty wild! Thanks to Danny Vopava and Ben Weiner, who wrote a lot of the set.
- We ended up landing on 8 packets, and with a slightly different distro:
6 "Literature"
6 "History"
4 "Fine Arts"
2 "R/M/P"
2 "Science"
The "main" mirror will be held the weekend of November 14th, and I'm looking for feedback on the best time to run it. You can vote on that and register a team here.

Re: ACRO-Demia: Global Announcement
This was a lot of fun, thanks for writing it! As someone whose trash interest has waned over the years, having each question be tied to an academic subject was a fun hook for me.

Re: ACRO-Demia: Global Announcement
This set rocks, and the theme worked even better than expected. I would be one of the first in line to play any future iterations.

Re: ACRO-Demia: Global Announcement
This was a very fun set. I would mildly recommend for the next set to go deeper rather than wider--that is, ask questions about only one or two pieces of media rather than jumping around so much (although I did like the mental puzzle of being ready for a wide variety of clues).

Re: ACRO-Demia: Global Announcement
This was a very difficult but rewarding set, and may be the best "general" trash set I've played in a while. A lot of great creative topics.

Re: ACRO-Demia: Global Announcement
I agree with all of the comments above. I appreciated the rigor of the set, especially considering how difficult it must have been to find pop culture common links for academic answer lines. Overall, it was a fun way to encourage a broad range of knowledge on canonical academic answer lines, just as it aimed to be.
