DC Metro 2019-2020 Date Claim Thread

Post by J. Young »

I'd like to thank Audrey for maintaining last year's thread.

I will be stepping up to the plate again and managing the DC Metro quizbowl calendar for the 2019-2020 season. I will be including local college tournaments so that any colleges hosting tournaments for high schoolers can work around those - note that not all of the college tournaments listed permit high schoolers to compete. If you want me to add an event to this list, email me at [email protected], message me privately on the forums, or make a post in the thread below (with the latter preferred). If you could also include the type of question set you're using (NAQT IS sets, IS-A sets, housewrite, etc.), that would be very helpful.

Red: NHBB events
Orange: National championships
Green: NAQT regular season events
Purple: Novice tournaments

Can this thread be stickied and the last season's archived? In addition, is there a way to display the calendar post above the chronologically first post in this thread, if possible?

Honaker tentatively plans to host the Steele Memorial Invitational III on October 12th.

As this will be a tournament under the SWATA banner (the Southwest Virginia Academic Team Alliance), it will be open exclusively to teams from Lee, Scott, Wise, Dickenson, Buchanan, Russell, Washington, Smyth, Tazewell, Grayson, Bland, Carroll, and Wythe counties as well as the independent cities of Norton and Galax. SWATA maintains this "border" due to geographic and financial limitations which usually prevent our region's teams from traveling 4+ hours to Richmond, Charlottesville, the Tidewater, or the DC-Metro area. While some teams from outside the footprint have inquired about future participation, we still feel that this circuit's primary goal is to provide accessibility for underserved teams with a limited capacity for travel.

Interested parties within the footprint may reach me at charliejperkins[at]gmail[dot]com.

SWATA plans to host another round of 4 tournaments this season, one per month, beginning with the Steele Memorial Invitational in October. Dates for the other 3 tournaments will be made available as soon as possible.

Question sets have yet to be determined, but due to the overlap in NAQT and VHSL questions, we expect the 4 tournaments to feature a mix of both NAQT and housewritten sets.

To semi-immediately bounce off the previous post, Gate City High School tentatively plans to host the Legion Memorial Invitational Tournament (LMIT) IV on November 9th. It will likely be the second tournament in the 2019-2020 SWATA series.

If anyone in the DC or Virginia area is looking to mirror a regular-difficulty housewrite in the fall or spring, RAFT (viewtopic.php?f=109&t=22863) is available October 1, potentially sooner, and our team is actively seeking out sites across the country. Contact me if you're interested.

The Centennial Invitational Tournament will be held on SUNDAY October 6, 2019 and we can now announce that we are using NAQT 185A.
This set will not overlap with the Virginia team leagues, but unfortunately will overlap with those in southern Pennsylvania. The announcement and registration link has been posted under Regular Season for High School.

The Burleigh Manor Middle School Invitational will be held on SATURDAY November 16. This will be for middle school and elementary schools only and we will be using NAQT MS-32. The announcement and registration link has been posted under Regular Season for Middle School.

Because Chess States is being held at TJ on 3/7, we have decided to move TJIAT later to 4/18. We hope that this change will make TJIAT a true
"nats-prep" tournament like it has been in the past.

EDIT: Rescheduled date changed from 2/15 to 4/18

GDS's Ben Cooper Memorial Tournament will be moving later in the year and we would tentatively like to claim March 14th for that tournament. I ran into some trouble working with the administration to reserve the building, but with unabated optimism I expect the second attempt to reserve the building to be more successful than the first.

Unfortunately, due to issues with reserving the building and getting permission from administration to host the tournament, Blair will have to cancel its WAIT mirror originally planned for November 16th. However, our two tournaments later in the year are still on, and we may decide to use WAIT for the spring one instead.

Some SWATA updates:

-The Steele Memorial Invitational III (Oct 12) will be running a mirror of the 2019 Scottie.
-The 2nd State Line Showdown (at Virginia High School) is scheduled for December 14th.
-The Tornado Invitational III (at Richlands High School) is scheduled for January 4th.

Reminder that SWATA is a closed circuit; see my initial post in this thread for a listing of SWATA's geographic footprint.

IAC is happy to announce it is holding the following tournaments in the region:

Varsity / JV

Teams may register at this link and find more information about a tournament on the tournament page here. The registration deadline is 7pm Eastern time on the (usually it’s a) Friday 8 days before the tournament or 7pm Eastern time the (usually it’s a) Monday before the tournament for an additional $10 late fee per team. There are no registration deadlines for individual events (i.e. walk ins are welcome; please arrive 15 minutes before the beginning of the Bee / Exams as per the schedule on the tournament page).

We will be holding the Varsity / JV National Qualifying Exams for the US Geography Championships / International Geography Bee, US History Bee, (new!) National Science Bee and (new!) National Political Science Bee during the first part of the lunch break. Those who take exam(s) should do the exam(s) first, and then eat afterwards - there will be time to do so. These are 50-question, 20-minute time limit multiple-choice tests - it's $10 per student per Exam. Important Note! - You CAN do 3 or 4 exams, but you still only have a maximum of 40 minutes to take these. You can also do other exams at our upcoming B and A Set tournaments or with a proctor at your school / homeschool association.

If you have further questions about any of these, please email our tournament coordinator, Marshall Mullins, at [email protected]

Blair will not host BLAST on 3/14. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes, as well as dragging on the time conflict with GDS's tournament for so long. We encourage everyone who was going to our tournament to go play LOGIC at GDS instead. We are looking into the weekend of the 28th/29th as a possible date BLAST could be rescheduled to.

This tournament is not restricted to only Virginia teams. We hope to offer an opportunity for all teams in the area to compete in a challenging, competitive tournament.

We've had some trouble with reserving rooms, but I was told that we should be able to make an official announcement a few days from now once we get confirmation for the room reservations.

RM's mirror of CALISTO has been moved to 3/22 to allow teams to attend Blair's REDSTART on 3/29 as well. A forum post has been made here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=23861

As Derek stated in his previous post, Blair will be hosting BLAST at our REDSTART tournament on 3/29. A big thank you to RM for accomodating us and we encourage everyone to sign up for both tournaments!
