Nittany Lion Novice V @ Penn State (10/12/2019)

Penn State Quiz Bowl will host Nittany Lion Novice V on October 12th, 2019. The tournament will run on the SCOP Novice 10 question set. The tournament is intended for new-to-quizbowl schools and new players of established teams. The initial field cap will be at 18 teams, but may expand if there is interest.

EDIT: The field cap has expanded to 36 teams.

Logistics
Registration will begin at 8:00 AM in Room 162 of the Willard Building, and will conclude at 8:40 AM. The opening meeting will take place in the same room at 8:45 AM. Matches will then begin at 9:00 AM. We aim to conclude the tournament no later than 4:00 PM. There will be a break in the middle for teams to get lunch. There are many excellent lunch locations within walking distance, and directions/suggestions will be given to teams the day of the tournament. Details about where to park and directions to the tournament location on campus will be emailed to teams about a week prior to the tournament.

EDIT: The tournament will take place during Parent's Weekend at Penn State, and as such, all local hotels are sold out. Teams are encouraged to travel the same day of the tournament to avoid any hotel conflicts.

Eligibility
Because this is a novice tournament, the following eligibility restrictions will be in place.

Students at any grade level who have never played a pyramidal quizbowl tournament before are automatically eligible to compete. IU competitions, televised leagues, and other local competitions do not count for the purposes of this rule.

Players who do not fall into this category must meet these four requirements to compete
1. Is enrolled in 9th or 10th grade during the 2019-2020 school year.
2. Has never been on a team that made playoffs at MSNCT or SSNCT.
3. Has never been on a team that went 4-6 or better at HSNCT.
4. Has never scored more than 20 PPG at any non-novice high school Quizbowl tournament.

Registration
To register for the tournament, please fill out this form. Teams that bring their buzzer systems or staff will be given a discount to their registration fee. The deadline to register is October 4th at 11:59 PM.

Teams may have a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 6 players per registered team, although up to 4 players may play at one time. Schools can bring as many teams as they like, but if a school is bringing more than six players, then they must split into two teams.

About a week prior to the tournament, registered teams will receive an email asking for rosters.

Fee Structure
$75 for a school’s first registered team
$65 per subsequent team
-$10 per buzzer system a school brings
-$10 per staff member a school brings
-$20 per team for any school that has not competed in a pyramidal quizbowl tournament in the past three years

All teams must pay the day of the tournament. We prefer to accept payment during registration right before the tournament starts. The minimum fee is $40 per team. Payments can be made via cash or check. Please make checks payable to “Penn State Quiz Bowl.”

Good question. Previous iterations of this tournament have given us around 12 to 15 teams. My goal for this tournament is to get around 18 teams to come (around the same number that came to our spring tournament), which is where I am putting the field cap for now. If there is more interest, then we will expand the field cap then if we have the resources to accommodate those teams.

Manheim Township beat State College A for 1st place by 5 points, and State College B beat Wellsboro by 5 points for 3rd place. Congrats to all the teams there, and I apologize for having a long day for all teams involved.
