2019 Sparta Fall Tournament - 26th October 2019, Sparta (Mo.) HS

Post by Atlashill »

On behalf of the members of Sparta High School Scholar Bowl, we welcome your team to join others from across Southern Missouri at the second Sparta Fall Tournament, scheduled for October 26th, 2019. Our tournament will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in the standard 20/20 format, with the following modifications:
  • Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus.
  • Correct tossup answers are ten points each. We will not be awarding powers. No penalty will be assessed for interrupting the moderator with an incorrect answer. There are no math computation questions. All tossups are five seconds.
  • The team that receives the bonus will have five seconds to answer each part. The moderator will prompt after four seconds. Each incorrect bonus part will immediately rebound. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each.
  • In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score.
  • Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per half - use it or lose it. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team.
  • Teams rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring junior varsity and “B” teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players, but we request that teams have at least two players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
We have secured the Lots Of Good, Interesting Content (LOGIC) set, written by members of academic teams at Miami Valley (OH), Adlai E Stevenson (IL) and University Lab (IL). More information is available at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... 09&t=22817. At present, LOGIC will also be used at Washington on December 7th. You will not be able to attend that tournament if you attend Sparta Fall. We are currently limiting the field to 18 teams; this may expand depending on staff availability. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur. Teams outside Missouri are welcome to register; however, owing to the MSHSAA sanctioning process, we ask that you register prior to September 24th.

Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for at 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.

Fee structure is as follows, per school:
  • Each team: $70
  • Discount for traveling more than 100 miles (one-way, as determined by Google Maps): $10
  • Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5
  • Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10
  • Discount for providing a competent moderator: $15
Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $35 per team. All discounts are subject to the discretion of tournament officials.

Sparta High School is located on Missouri Route 14 on the eastern edge of Sparta, after the highway splits to the north from Route 125. With few restaurant options in the immediate vicinity, we are working on an on-site option for teams; when this is finalized we will provide more details.

The tournament is under the direction of Sparta High School Coach Philip Hopkins and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. We anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership. Additionally, we anticipate Sparta Fall serving as a qualifier for the PACE National Scholastic Championship, set for June 6th and 7th in Chicago.

To register for this tournament, please visit http://tinyurl.com/SpartaFall19. Questions concerning the tournament may be directed to either Philip Hopkins at [email protected] or Kyle Hill at [email protected]. Please include “Sparta Fall 2019” in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at Sparta High School on October 26th.

And just like that, we're full. We will start a waitlist, with preference given to teams able to provide staff. With enough staff we should be able to expand to 24 teams.

We have a hungry, growing circuit in Southwest Missouri. Fortunately, we've lined up enough staff to expand the field to 24 teams. Unfortunately, we're not able to expand further. I'm in the process of informing teams on the waitlist of the expanded openings.

Stats: CombinedPrelimsPlayoffs

College Heights didn't miss a beat in going 9-0, averaging 450 points per 20 tossups heard. That included a solid, 380-240 victory over Thayer A. This game featured our top two individual players, Garrett Blum of Thayer (152.8 points per 20 tossups heard) and Gabe Forrest of CHC (147 pp20). Kickapoo Gold defeated Eldon A for third, and Greenwood Lab needed overtime to defeat Fair Grove A for fifth place and the final bid that should be available from PACE for the National Scholastic Championship, set for June 6th and 7th in Chicago. Fair Grove A was also recognized with our small school award as the top small school team outside the top three overall.

My thanks to our staff: moderators Tara Bonebrake, Kamieron Douglas, Tyler Evans, Jeffrey Hill, William Koch, Bob Lynch, Jean Miller, Angie Odom, Jamie Richey, Scott Twente, Michael VanCleave, Michael Walker and Scott Walker; scorekeepers Amelia Wigdon, Hannah, Julia, Malina, Shayn, and Zane from Sparta, and Caitlyn and Olivia from Jasper. I also extend a special thanks to Project Graduation for operating our lunch and concession stand.

I am again appreciative of Sparta High School Coach Philip Hopkins for his eagerness to host again and welcome more teams onto campus, as well as activities director Larry Brown, principal Gwenda Barton, Superintendent Rocky Valentine and everyone at Sparta R-III for their support of our event.

As a reminder, DO NOT DISCUSS question material with anyone who has not yet played the set. LOGIC will be used at least twice more this year in Missouri, as well as dozens of other tournaments nationwide. If you have any comments about the set, you are welcome to send them to Coach Hopkins or me, and we will forward them to the set's writers.

With the tournament's initial field filling up in eight hours, I am amazed by the growing interest in quiz bowl in Southwest Missouri. I'm also appreciative of the willingness of teams to branch out and take part in what I believe is the first tournament in Southwest Missouri involving timed halves. I look forward to seeing many of you in action next weekend at Glendale, and wish you all the best as your season continues.

Again I close with the benediction of my late freshman journalism adviser: "Be Safe! Be Smart!"
