Michigan Winter Tournament Discord Playtest Mirror [December 21, 2019]

Post by CPiGuy »

The editors of the Michigan Winter Tournament are happy to announce an open playtesting mirror of our tournament on Saturday, December 21, 2019.

Question Set

The tournament will use the Michigan Winter Tournament question set; specifically the first 9-10 rounds of it, depending on field size, plus finals as needed. More information about the question set can be found there.

This tournament will be a playtest mirror; while we of course want to produce as good of a question set as possible, this will not be the final version of the set, and we'll be using feedback from players at this mirror to improve the set for in-person mirrors.

After the tournament is over, we'll figure out a date (or dates) to play through the rest of the set for those who are interested (since it will have 15 packets in total).

Eligibility

This tournament will be fully open. There are no eligibility restrictions. Note, however, that there will be closed in-person mirrors in most to all major quizbowl circuits, so if you are an active collegiate player, you probably do not want to play this. If there are a sizable number of actual college teams that do not get an opportunity to play this set, we will also host a second, closed or semi-open, Discord mirror after physical mirrors have finished.

Registration and field cap

The initial field cap is 8 teams, or 32 players. If there is additional interest, we will expand the field, but we will fill shorthanded teams with free agents before doing so.

Here is a team formation spreadsheet.

In order to formally register, please send me an email with the subject line "MWT Discord registration" noting your team composition, whether you intend to pay by Venmo or cannot do so, and if applicable, the Venmo username you'll be using to pay me. This will be sufficient to constitute a registration.

Payment

The base fee for the tournament will be $72. Teams will have the opportunity to receive a $12 rebate on this fee by filling out a Google form after the tournament which will ask for feedback about the set. (Teams are also encouraged to give feedback through other means!)

Teams are strongly encouraged to pay via Venmo, and will be asked to pay all at once (i.e. not in one payment for all four players). If you cannot pay via Venmo, please let me know at least a week before the tournament.

In the event that Rutgers is unable to move its mirror, I will be playing this online mirror instead. Happy to play with anyone, prefer teammates who know Anglo lit and/or bio/chem.

This tournament currently has 8 full or almost-full teams signed up, plus four free agents.

If we get at least two or three more free agents to sign up, we will run it with 10 teams.

If we do not, we will assign free agents to existing teams and run it with 8 teams, some of which will have five players. (This is preferable to having byes, in my opinion.)

Teams of 5 players will not be required to have anyone sit.

I'll send out a logistics email to the contacts listed for registered teams sometime late this week. We're likely going to start at 10:30 EST.

Stats from Saturday's online mirror can be found here. Thanks to everyone who played! We're looking forward to using your feedback to make an even better final product.
