Prison Bowl XIII Mainsite - Hunter College HS (New York, NY) [CANCELLED]

Post by rachelyang »

Hunter College High School is excited to be hosting the main site of Prison Bowl XIII, our annual housewrite, on Saturday, May 2nd, 2020. Hunter College High School is located at 71 E 94th Street, New York, NY, 10128, between Park and Madison Avenues. For questions and/or concerns, email tournament director Rachel Yang at [email protected].

We will likely have the tournament in the fall (hopefully during the fall break in October a number of colleges have so this year's seniors can play with their teammates).

Registration
To re-register or register for this tournament, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/B16dWEhQFvPePoHf9. We will email you with a confirmation. The soft field cap is 24, though our full capacity is 36.

Payment
$70 for the first team from a school
$60 for each subsequent team
-$5 for every working buzzer system
-$10 for each good moderator
Minimum fee for schools bringing n teams = $50*n

Further discounts (such as for travel) can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

We prefer payment through a check made out to HCHS Quiz Bowl with team name on the memo line on the day of the tournament. If this is not possible, cash will also be accepted.

Question Set

Prison Bowl XIII is a regs+ set written and edited by the Hunter College High School team. The Head Editor is Rachel Yang, the Vice Head Editor is Asher Jaffe, and the other sectional editors are Benjamin Chapman, Ella Leeds, Pedro Juan Orduz, and Cerulean Ozarow.

Past Prison Bowls can be found at quizbowlpackets.com.
More information can be found at viewtopic.php?f=109&t=22840&p=359525#p359474.

Tournament Format
Tournament games will follow standard ACF rules of untimed rounds consisting of 20 tossups and 20 three-part, 30 point bonuses (without bouncebacks). Ties will be broken by tiebreaker tossups. 15 point powers and -5 negs before the end of the tossup apply, but no double negs.

The tournament itself will consist of bracketed round-robin prelims and rebracketed round-robin playoffs, the details of which will be decided after the field size is determined. Teams will play between 9 and 13 rounds, depending on the field size. There will be trophies for top teams, as well as book prizes for top scorers.

Registration will be from 8:00 to 8:45 am, and the first round will begin at 9:00 am. The tournament will end between 5 and 6 pm, depending on the the field and structure of the tournament.

Transportation
Our school is located at 71 East 94th Street, New York, NY, 10128, between Park and Madison Avenues. It is very close to the 96th Street stop on the 6 train line, and is also accessible via the 96th Street stop on the Q line, located on 2nd Avenue. We can also be reached by the M1-4 buses along 5th and Madison Avenues, M101-103 buses on Lexington and 3rd Avenues, and the crosstown M96 and M106 buses along 96th Street. Look for the large, red castle-like building. There is a bus drop-off area at our school on Park Avenue, and cars can park at Majestic Car Park on 94th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues.

Please note that Hunter is located in the center of the incredibly dense urban jungle that is Manhattan. Teams have encountered parking troubles during tournaments with especially large fields, so here is a list of other nearby car parks in case the curb around our school and Majestic Car Park are crowded:

Gallery Garage Corporation (>1 block away, 94th and Madison)
Icon Parking Systems (~2 blocks away, 94th and 3rd)
Icon Parking Systems (~3 blocks away, 95th between 2nd and 3rd)
Garage Management Company (~3 blocks away, 94th between 2nd and 3rd)

Food
For breakfast, we'll provide juice and some top-notch New York City bagels, and for lunch, we'll release teams for about an hour to explore the numerous local eateries. We'll provide a map detailing these.

Please email [email protected] with any questions. See you on May 2nd!

Prison Bowl XIII has been designated a platinum qualifier for PACE NSC, meaning that the top 25% of our field (rounded up to the nearest integer) will qualify for the tournament. Additionally, many top teams in the nation, including Groger Ranks' current #2, #4, and #6 nationally ranked teams, will be attending — this is an excellent pre-nats opportunity to test your strength against top teams!

Re: Prison Bowl XIII Mainsite - NOW MAY 2ND - Hunter College HS (New York, NY) [RESCHEDULED]

Post by rachelyang »

This tournament has been rescheduled to May 2nd. To re-register use this form: https://forms.gle/aM6atvY7DbtpQ8Ws6. If the situation continues to worsen and we are unable to host in May, we will likely have the tournament in the fall (hopefully during the fall break in October a number of colleges have so this year's seniors can play with their teammates). We hope to see you at the rescheduled date. We apologize for any inconveniences, and we thank you for understanding. Stay safe!

As per CDC's recommendations, we are cancelling Prison Bowl. We will look at options in the fall to host and hopefully current seniors will be able to come back and play with their current teams. Stay safe!
