2020 WORKSHOP at Swarthmore (3/21/2020)

Post by SwarthmoreQuizbowl »

Swarthmore College Quizbowl is pleased to announce that we will be hosting a collegiate mirror of WORKSHOP, a regular-difficulty college set on March 21, 2020. Registration will begin at 8 am and matches will start at 9 am. The majority of this tournament will take place in Kohlberg Hall, in the center of Swarthmore's campus.

For more information on the set, please see the set announcement.

REGISTRATION
Please register by filling out this form. If you have any questions regarding registration, please e-mail tournament director Rebecca Rosenthal at swarthmorequizbowl [AT gmail DOT com].

We will be instituting an initial field cap of 18 teams; we are limiting each school to 2 teams plus as many waitlist teams as desired until March 1.

FEES
Base: $125 per team
-$10 for each working buzzer system
-$10 for each experienced staffer (subject to tournament director discretion)
-$10 per 200 miles traveled as determined by Google Maps
Minimum fee per team: $65

Payment may be made in cash, check, or Venmo on the tournament date. Details on payment options will be sent to registered teams in advance of the tournament. Teams not paying by the tournament date are subject to a late fee.

FORMAT AND LOGISTICS
Our tournament format will depend on the number of teams, but we anticipate using a two-stage group system, and guaranteeing all teams that stay to the tournament's conclusion at least 8 games.

Rounds will follow standard, untimed format: consisting of 20 tossups, for 15 point powers and -5 point negs.

Swarthmore is accessible via the Media/Elwyn SEPTA Regional Rail line, which connects to 30th Street Station Amtrak and bus lines in center-city Philadelphia. Free parking is available.

With 3 weeks remaining until the tournament, we are hoping for a few more registrations. We intend to run the tournament with 6 teams (filling in with a house team if necessary), but the more the merrier!

The field opens to waitlist teams tomorrow.

Swarthmore has instituted a ban on public events and requested students do not return to campus, so the physical tournament will have to be cancelled for the time being. We have sent an email to all qualified teams gauging interest in an online mirror on the 21st, including lowered mirror fees. If your team is interested in attending an online mirror, please send us an email immediately ([email protected]).

Thank you for the intrepid members of Maryland, Delaware, Rutgers A and Rutgers B for joining us for an online mirror today. After a triple round robin, Maryland had cleared the field with a 9-0 record. Delaware finished second with a 6-3 record. Complete stats are available here.

Thank you to James Hadley of Rutgers, Connor Mayers of Penn Manor, and Simon Herz, Rebecca Posner-Hess, Elena Lee of Swarthmore for joining us today as staffers. Thank you especially to James for help with setting up Discord servers. We hope the tournament was a fun experience in these trying times.
