WORKSHOP at New York University (May 2, 2020) - yup, cancelled

Post by Marcion of Sinope »

Quiz Bowl at NYU is pleased to announce a high school-only mirror of WORKSHOP to be held on May 2nd, 2020! You can find more information about the question set here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=22892.

This tournament is a platinum-certified qualifier for PACE NSC. The top 25% of teams in the field will qualify for PACE NSC.

REGISTRATION
Based on room availability, the field is currently capped at 15 teams. To register, email Theresa Nyowheoma (the tournament director) at theresa.nyowheoma at NYU's domain name (nyu.edu). Be sure to include the number of teams you will be bringing and any discounts you will be claiming, as well as contact information for at least one person who will be in attendance.

FEES
Base Fee: $85/team
Buzzer Discount: -$5 per complete, functioning buzzer set
Staffer Discount: -$10 for a competent staffer
Travel Discount: -$10 per 200 miles traveled per Google Maps

Minimum of $50 per team. Payment must be made on the day of the tournament by cash or check. Please make any checks out to "New York University," with "Quiz Bowl at NYU" in the subject line.

LOGISTICS
The tournament will take place in NYU's Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life (GCASL), located at 238 Thompson St, New York, NY 10012. We will begin registration at 9:00am and begin games around 9:20am.

We would generally recommend you take some form of public transportation to get here, if possible. If you have any questions about the best ways to get here, or about navigating the NYC Subway, do not hesitate to ask us. If you drive, there are several parking options in the vicinity of GCASL, but be prepared to shell out some money for a spot.

I need not say that food options for lunch and dinner are extremely plentiful here in Manhattan. If you want recommendations, ask anyone affiliated with NYU during the tournament.

FIELD (0/15)

Finally, feel free to email Theresa at the above address or respond to this post with any questions or concerns!

Probably should put it out there that NJ States @ Rutgers is now also on 5/2, so that might cause conflicts for some teams.

This is true. We're going to have some internal discussions and see if we think this tournament is still viable. Room reservations are difficult to come by at NYU, so it's unlikely we'd be able to reschedule. (It's also just a busy time of year, with various national tournaments and final exams crowding the schedule too.)

Given the developments of the past week, we've decided the safest course of action is just to officially cancel this tournament for now. That being said, we'll keep the room reservations, and if things have returned to a general state of normalcy by May 2, we'd be happy to organize some relatively relaxed event (either on this set or another one) to get people back in the swing of playing quiz bowl. (I wouldn't make any plans yet, though.)

edit: since campus is now closed for the rest of the semester, nothing will happen on May 2
